“The Bond Of Love – True Love Is A Miracle & Gift. In Fact, It Is A Blessing.” ~ Unknown
“Love Is An Universal Emotion. You Needed It, You Need It & You Will Need It. Where On Earth Do You Think, You Can Survive Without It?” ~ Unknown
Well, I Can’t Explain What Love Is. But Looking At Those Puppets, I Bet That’s Actually A True PUPPET LUV. When They Unite, Even Their Shadows Speak LOVE!!
Hundreds of teachers and makers gathered at the ReMake Education Summit, organized by the Sonoma County Office of Education on August 2 - 4, 2017, at Studio 180 in Sonoma. I really like this local maker event, which helps you connect with some of the same folks you might meet at Maker Faire, but without all the crowds, and with a healthy focus on education in our area.
Here are photos of the events and exhibits featured in this set:
• 360 Storytelling and Immersive Learning through VR Creation (Dimitri Moore & Lisa Jobson)
• Design Thinking with Puppets (Sam Patterson & Elaine Wrenn)
• Storytelling in the STEAM Classroom - NASA’s Journey to Mars (Kimberly Brush, Casey Shea & Anna Van Dordrecht)
• HyperDuino interactive maker projects (Roger Wagner)
• How to program a Raspberry Pi
• Make your own cardboard guitar
• 180 Studios maker workshop
I gave a talk about our Maker Art classes on Thursday afternoon. We teach children to create magical worlds together, combining art, tech and storytelling. Our students get really engaged in the process, which helps them develop their creative, problem-solving and social skills. The talk was well received and folks seemed to enjoy hearing about our latest classes on the Time Machine and Robot World.
Many thanks to Dan Blake, Matt O'Donnell, Casey Shea, Anna Van Dordrecht and the whole team at the Sonoma County Office of Education and 180 Studios for organizing this fine gathering. They did a great job connecting teachers, makers and resources. It was a great way to share best practices, brainstorm new ideas, and start new collaborations.

Vintage paper mache puppet head looking surprised or in awe. Fun photo with lots of room for copy and additional photos or information.
On the way back from Ha Long Bay, our tour included a stop at a small village for a Water Puppet show. We had heard horror stories about it being a giant tourist trap, but we were pleasantly surprised - it was cute, and there was no pressure to buy anything. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vietnamese_Water_puppets
The first poster to be printed at the new Hottt Off The Press space was for Maple Rabbit's first East Coast show in while, paired up with a series of short puppet films curated by Heather Henson. Graphic by Molly Rabbit, text and layout by me, Smootron Rabbit provided touch-ups and moral support. Apologies to Shannon for not scrubbing the tub.
Took a photo of drew and well... messed with it a bit. I may end up doing another human puppet but a full body pose.
“I was watching a soap opera and all of a sudden an earthquake took place,” says Natcharin, a 13-year old girl who lives in Chiang Saen, northern Thailand. “My mum and I hid under the table and bed. If there is a disaster, people in our community will be in trouble."
Natcharin recently attended a 2-day workshop with 29 other children from 4 villages to create characters and stories to use for a shadow puppet show all about disasters.
“In our story, we want to talk about how it isn’t good to ignore flood warnings. I’ll use my knowledge to perform for adults and children so that they know how dangerous disasters can be”.
Shadow puppetry is an effective way for vulnerable children and communities to learn about disaster risk reduction using easy, fun and engaging media. In partnership with Plan Thailand, the organisation Wondering Moon uses shadow theatre to tell stories of disasters.

Some people find this sort of thing quite scary...
11 November. Single in November with the SMC Pentax 85mm f1.8. Took this, looking for a low key image today...Something about this beautiful puppet on our wall seemed appropriate. Processed to give a darker but serene feel, and hopefully not too depressing. It's easily sharp enough in the shadows to boost-up the vibrant colours of the puppet's dress etc. but this is my take today.
So I went to Lavender Festival today and met this fascinating and kind puppeteer who was just strolling around the festival before her show. Because she looked interesting with her yellow dress, flowery hat, and her puppet, I asked her if I can take a picture of her. Then I got to know her puppet, possum, and watched her show. Compare to other puppet shows I've seen, she interacted with children and danced together. It is always fun to meet someone new
This man is a skilled puppet maker and puppeteer. He was deep in contemplation, exhailing smoke from a cigarette as carefully examined the puppet head he was painting. There seemed to be a connection between the maker and the puppet - as you might expect there would be...because in the future he will bring this puppet to life!
