Wonderful views towards the Marmolada range whilst hiking on the Padon ridge area, our highest point being Porta Vescovo at 2478m, which wasn't open but the WiFi was working! If you zoom in a ski station on the left can be seen to give it some scale.
This is one of the most popular iron road in Dolomites. The Italians call it also Cresta Ovest. This itinerary goes to the highest spire of the Marmolada, Punta Penia at 3342 m that dominates all the Dolomite peaks.
A Brocken spectre (German: Brockengespenst), also called Brocken bow or mountain spectre, is the magnified (and apparently enormous) shadow of an observer cast upon clouds opposite of the Sun's direction. The figure's head is often surrounded by the halo-like rings of coloured light forming a glory, which appears opposite of the Sun's direction when uniformly-sized water droplets in clouds refract and backscatter sunlight.
The phenomenon can appear on any misty mountainside or cloud bank, even when seen from an aeroplane, but the frequent fogs and low-altitude accessibility of the Brocken, a peak in the Harz Mountains in Germany, have created a local legend from which the phenomenon draws its name. The Brocken spectre was observed and described by Johann Silberschlag in 1780, and has since been recorded often in literature about the region.

The Dolomites are a mountain range located in northeastern Italy. Typical of the Dolomites are the steep cliffs and peaks created by erosion and weathering. They form a part of the Southern Alps. The Dolomites, also known as the Pale Mountains, take their name from the carbonate rock dolomite. In August 2009, the Dolomites were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Marmolada of 3343 meter high is the highest mountain of the Dolomites. On it's norther side there is flat glacier. The ridge is composed of several summits, decreasing in altitude from west to east. An aerial tramway goes to the top of Punta Rocca. During the ski season the Marmolada's main ski run is opened for skiers and snowboarders alike, making it possible to ski down into the valley. On the south wall of the Marmolada there are beautiful routes for mountaineers and many of them are also suitable for hiking.

While mountains don't literally "make their own weather," they do sometimes provide additional catalysts to create localized disturbances which you might otherwise characterize as "bad weather" (thunderstorms, clouds, rain, etc). One of the big reasons that we seem to be 'caught' by the weather when we're on the mountain is that the mountain forces otherwise harmless air to ascend and condense. As the warm and moist air is forced to ascend the mountain, the air quickly cools and reaches its dew point, water droplets form and a vicious cycle is set in motion. Photo of Alpine Cloughs. The flight of the Alpine Choughs is swift and acrobatic with loose deep wing beats. Its high manoeuvrability is accomplished by fanning the tail, folding its wings, and soaring in the updraughts at cliff faces.

Typisch voor de Dolomieten zijn de steile rotswanden en pieken, die zijn ontstaan door erosie en verwering. De bergketen is opgesplitst in twee delen: het oostelijke en het westelijke. De hoogste top van de Dolomieten, de Marmolada, is 3343 meter hoog. De Marmolada is een berg met een gletsjer. Nog ongeveer 15 andere bergen bereiken de grens van 3000 meter. Deze toppen zijn de hoogste bergtoppen in de Dolomieten en de Marmolada wordt daarom ook wel de koningin van de Dolomieten genoemd. De aanloop van de berg kan bereikt worden via de Fedaiapas. Je komt bij de Marmolada vanuit berghut Ciapela met een kabelbaan verdeeld in drie stukken: de eerste stopt bij Banc, de tweede gaat tot Serauta en de derde komt aan bij Punta Rocca. Vanaf hier gaat bij de berghut Ciapela de historische skipiste Bellunese naar beneden, 12 kilometer lang en zeker de mooiste piste van de Alpen. Op de zuidwand van de Marmolada zijn er prachtige routes voor bergbeklimmers en veel ervan zijn ook geschikt om te wandelen. Het weer op de Marmolada kan erg verraderlijk zijn. Omstandigheden veranderen razendsnel: het ene moment lijkt het bloedheet, maar zodra er wolken voor de zon schijnen kan het erg koud zijn. Een en ander hangt af van de hoogte waarop je vertoeft. De wind op grote hoogte is altijd sterker dan aan de grond. Windstoten van 200km/h of meer komen op de hoogste toppen dan ook geregeld voor. Op de berg kun je de Alpenkauw zien die op grote hoogten hun kunsten uithalen: eerst maken ze duizelingwekkende duikvluchten, dan zweven ze weer hele stukken om vervolgens loodrecht naar beneden te storten en vlak voor de rotsbodem terug op te trekken in een steile beklimming. Ze gebruiken de wervelende luchtstromen rond bergtoppen en wanden.
