Punk is a style of music born out of resistance. Out of the will to find a voice against social injustices, out of the desire to make a difference; to move people, and to become a movement itself with seemingly simple means.

While walking around the French Quarter, I noticed a few kids begging or performing for money. It was than that I learned the phrase "Gutter Punk" from my friend in New Orleans.

I did something very unusual for me today, I heard a Blue Jay squawking nearby but I didn't start a search party. Don't get the wrong idea, I was about to do just that, but when I turned around, there was a tree full of these birds.
I've never seen these birds, and they all seemed happy enough to ignore me and stay perched on their tree for a few minutes.
I think I stood there inching closer and closer for about 5 minutes before a group of runners passed by and scared them all off, but that 5 minutes was all I needed!
Does anyone what these birds are called? They're very pretty! Cedar waxwing! A huge thank you to John and beyondhue for identifying the bird for me!

Bumblebee of indeterminate species feeding on nectar following a power shower courtesy of a torrential downpour. This has caused the hairs on the thorax to be combed forward to form a punk like fringe. Alternatively a Trump-fringed Bumblebee.

A cold breeze raises the crest feathers on an American Tree Sparrow (Spizelloides arborea) catching the last rays of the sun. Tree sparrows spend the winter in the continental U.S in brushy habitats., but nest during the summer in boreal and Arctic regions of North America. Mis-named by European settlers, Tree Sparrows are actually ground dwellers and nesters (if that is indeed a verb..). Their small size, equating to a high surface area to volume ratio (and thus high heat loss), requires regular eating in cold weather. According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology they consume 30% of their body mass each day. Not eating in a 24 hour period results in death of the bird. This equates to tough times when we have weather like we do now- a foot of new snow and temperatures below 10° F (-12° C).

As everyone would have noticed I have been very absent from your streams lately. I have been continuing to photograph things but have been posting them on Instagram, which is a little like Flickr on crack. This has got me through the winter and the almost complete absence of flowers and insects in Melbourne! I hope you are well.
