Photographed from the treetop path; the Alpine House with a small forest on the roof.
After a guided tour through various houses of the Beelitz pulmonary sanatorium, we were on the treetop path. I took this photo from there. A small forest had grown on the roof of the ruin over the years. The area is a listed building, some of the houses have been sold and renovated by the new owners, they are no longer accessible to visitors. Another part is now a rehabilitation centre for people who have had a stroke.
I wish you a good week, stay mindful and healthy, dear friends.

Normally, I don't let Rooster out until I know Mama moose has left the premises but she came back so it was a surprise that her and Rooster met up. Now, If any of you wonder what would happen if you encounter any wildlife on the trail how your dog would react....well, they bring them back to you. That's right, Mama moose came galloping right past me down my driveway. She doesn't perceive me as a threat so I was safe. Imagine if that was a bear? Something I learned from this picture is when a moose is perturbed their ears go comically sideways. She has never showed me that facial expression.
Of course, Rooster thinks it is all a game, just another horse on the property.
As a side note, sadly Rooster got ran over by a truck just outside my ranch gate by a passerby going about 80, he was rushed to the Dog ER on Sunday. He suffered a pulmonary contusion so he is on bed rest and as you can imagine not happy about it now that he is on the mend. All a very traumatic ordeal, I will forever be haunted by his cry as he got run over. Hope he has learned his lesson about cars as I never had a dog that didn't respect motorized vehicles. Had I known, I wouldn't have rescued him, there is only one ending, but apparently Rooster has a guardian angel. BTW- ER Vets think you shit out money, just saying. $1600 a night. This dog is going to give me a heart attack yet. Where is my beloved Sadie Dawg when I need her? Heavy sigh....
Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) is a complication of pulmonary embolism and a major cause of chronic PH leading to right heart failure and death. Lung ventilation/perfusion scintigraphy is the screening test of choice; a normal scan rules out CTEPH. In the case of an abnormal perfusion scan, a high-quality pulmonary angiogram is necessary to confirm and define the pulmonary vascular involvement and prior to making a treatment decision. PH is confirmed with right heart catheterisation, which is also necessary for treatment determination. In addition to chronic anticoagulation therapy, each patient with CTEPH should receive treatment assessment starting with evaluation for pulmonary endarterectomy, which is the guideline recommended treatment. For technically inoperable cases, PH-targeted medical therapy is recommended (currently riociguat based on the CHEST studies), and balloon pulmonary angioplasty should be considered at a centre experienced with this challenging but potentially effective and complementary intervention.

The old walls are haunted by the ghosts of the Beelitz pulmonary sanatorium.
At midnight, when all visitors have left the grounds, they play their spooky game. Little men and little women should not come together. They were neatly separated in two complexes. But...they found a way to meet at night. Both complexes were connected underground with corridors. During the day, meals and laundry were brought from the central kitchen and laundry to the individual houses.
Resourceful sick people discovered them and lo and behold, they were able to meet after all.
However, this only worked until their visits were discovered. Now the secret meetings were over, the entrances were locked for the night with thick locks.
I wish you a good and healthy week, dear visitors.
Stay cheerful, thank you for your visit!

Yesterday morning Vassenka's big, kind heart stopped beating ... pulmonary edema.
He came to me as an adult cat at the age of 13. "kind" people shattered his jaw. Three operations, more than a year of rehabilitation ...
Vasya was one of those people talk about - a cat-man ... only he could not speak ... although no, he could ... in his own cat language. He knew how to look into the soul .. He quietly approached, sat down beside him, gently touched with his soft paw and quietly creased the comforting ones. And the warmth was spreading in my soul ... It won't do anymore ..
Run along the Rainbow, a big and kind Cat! A huge part of my soul has gone with you

Lily dashing through fresh snow in -22F. The light was so good I had to try but I couldn't get more than a few clicks off before my finger tips froze then I had to dash to the wood stove to warm them up. Once you freeze your fingers they're never the same. Mine burned for several days after. Someone should invent special thin gloves for taking pictures with warmers in them, I think they'd be a hit. We have more snow than this as it has been snowing everyday. For those of you wondering if the cold weather affects her lungs; a little cantering and kicking up her heels is fine but nothing more. Basically, horses’ lungs can be damaged when strenuously exercised in cold temperatures. If the temperatures get really cold, keep the exercise light to prevent pulmonary problems, especially if your horse has heaves from eating dusty hay.
We visited this turf house where we saw how people have lived in Iceland for generations. I concluded it was a tough life with poor ventilation and the ever present threat of death from cold or pulmonary disease.
Eiríksstaðir in Haukadalur is believed to be the birthplace of Leifur Eiríksson, or “Leif the Lucky”, who is said to be the first European to set foot in North America around the year 1000 C.E.
Archaeologists first studied this site in the mid-20th century, and excavations in the late 1990s uncovered a 10th century longhouse. Leifur Eiríksson was the son of Eirík the Red, the famous Norse explorer who founded settlements in Greenland.
Dear Flickr's friends. For a while I will not be able to enjoy my passion for photography. Next Tuesday, May 23, I will undergo surgery for a pulmonary nodule. The post operative process is long and painful. I hope that soon I can get well and continue enjoying your precious works. Thank you very much for your visits, comments and support. See you soon!

Remembering my husband, Randolph C. Robinson, MD, DDS, a Craniofacial Surgeon who provided humanitarian free facial reconstructive surgeries for many patients.
Without warning, he was diagnosed with late-stage cancer. We were both shocked and saddened with this news.
But like a knowledgeable surgeon (who already knew his chances for survival were slim), he stated he likely had only six months to live. And almost six months later to the day, after he fought valiantly through several rounds of chemotherapy, painful procedures, and a complex surgery, he suddenly passed away. It was from a pulmonary embolus (blood clot to his lung).
I miss my soulmate dearly, but must now move forward in life, "Seeing through a glass, darkly, knowing [only] in part . . . " what to do.
I am determined to carry on his legacy of serving others with great needs; bringing joy and hope to their lives and their loved ones however I can.

I chose to use this photo of a Red-tailed Hawk because they are symbols of power, courage and strength and I hope my dad is now flying as free as this hawk.
My dad Arne died today Feb 23, 2023 which would of been my mother's bday making it even harder. My mom passed away just over a year ago. To lose my dad this close to my mom has been grief upon grief. It is unimaginable pain to have no parents left. No one is alive now who knew me from the day I was born. I still need my dad and his loss has come as a complete shock. Everything happened so fast, it seems like a dream. He was my rock and my protector. He was the kindest most gentle soul.
My dad got pneumonia that was resistant to antibiotics despite the doctors trying two different kinds of broad spectrum IV antibiotics. The infection could not be controlled and despite a picc line in to administer meds to his heart, his kidneys, heart and lungs shut down. His infection in his chest was so bad it caused irreversible pulmonary fibrosis. He grew weaker and needed high flow oxygen ventilation to survive. This man never got COVID and was rarely sick and now was fighting for his life. Despite IV steroids he continued to grow weaker and slipped into a coma. Before that he spoke to me and was so grateful my sister and I came to visit him daily. He thanked and kissed me and told me he loved me every day. When the doctors asked me if it was ok to pull his ventilation when he went into a coma it was a very hard decision, despite it being the right choice. I knew my dad did not want to live in a vegetative state. However, it is not a decision I would ever wish on my worst enemy because it is still taking away a life prolonging element. My sister and I held our dad's hands as he passed away in palliative care early this morning. He passed peacefully and quickly. I miss him so. I miss his laugh, his hugs, his kisses and his warmth. I miss his guidance, strength and beautiful presence. I miss his voice and am truly heart broken I won't ever hear him or see him ever again. I hope that since he chose to pass on my mother's birthday he is now with her and is at peace. The peace this gentle, extraordinary and kind man truly deserves who did so much for me and who loved me every single day of his life. When we told his 4 year old grandson that he passed he cried and cried. It was so heartbreaking.
I am so grateful I had such a loving and kind dad. My dad actually is the one who got me into birding at five years old and bought me my first field guide. I will be lost without him but hope he knows how much I love him and how proud I was to call him my dad. Losing a parent is so hard and navigating life without both when you are young is not easy, so I hope I can find the strength to continue on and make them proud. I am not looking forward to all the things one must do once they pass away. So for now I will just take it day by day and plan his funeral and grieve the loss of a wonderful man who taught me how to love and respect nature and how to treat others with dignity and respect. Thank you Dad for loving me and giving me such a good life. Thank you for giving me an example to live by and for inspiring me with your strength and resilience to adversity and for never complaining even when you were suffering. You made me proud dad and I hope I will do the same for you.
Thank you to the amazing staff and Internal Medicine and Respirology team at St. Paul's hospital and the Palliative Care Team and all the nurses and doctors that cared for him from the moment he walked in until his final day on earth today.
Rest in peace dad I will never forget you and I love you always, now and forever.
I've been hanging too, for days. I received my first Corona vaccine with AstraZeneca on May 13, the side effects were nowhere near as severe as my husband's (it totally laid him up for 2 days), but along with my cardiac pulmonary edema, it was enough.
I am now recovering for a while and wish you a great week.
With best regards, Maya
Saludos cordiales, Maya

Taken close to Skagen Gray Lighthouse. We stayed at a distance not to disturb this baby seal, waiting for his mother to bring food. It was visibly sick, and a local employee told us many seals were affected by pulmonary diseases when we reported our encounter.
Wikipedia

A former pulmonary sanatorium on a lake in the district of Oberhavel in Brandenburg. "It was the first sanatorium for pulmonary tuberculosis in the north German lowlands and was founded in 1896 by the German Red Cross as an experimental facility to test whether sanatorium cures in the Brandenburg pine forest were just as successful as in the mountains and by the sea. After the Second World War, it served as a military hospital from 1945 until the withdrawal of the Soviet army from Germany in 1992. After that, the site was a popular backdrop for films and photographs for some time, but also for vandals." Wikipedia

The treetop path in the quadrant of the former women's accommodation in the Beelitz Heilstätten pulmonary sanatorium was built as a hot-dip galvanized steel structure made of commercially available structural steel and is over 700 m long. Since 2015, the path has led along the war ruins of the "Alpenhaus" and since 2020 you can also view the surgery building from a bird's eye view. At the observation tower (already shown see comment field) there is a viewing platform at the highest level, which can also be reached by elevator.

This is a Cormorant. They are incredibly adept swimmers and can dive to depths of 200 feet or more. They must have highly evolved cardio-pulmonary systems and organ structures regarding oxygen/Co2 management and hydrostatic pressure. The oldest known Cormorant lived to twenty-three years and eight months (Wow)! When I saw this one he was in a tree with seven other Cormorants. He looks hungry.
For train tracks Thursday, As the terminus for the railroad, Thomasville was accessible from the north and, during the late 1800's, became known as the "Winter Resort of the South." In the beginning of this era, Northerners and other visitors came to Thomasville for their health, breathing the pine-scented air as a curative for pulmonary ailments. They were soon joined by friends to enjoy hunting, fishing, and an active social life, including golf, horse racing and bicycling. Thomasville came to represent the best of Southern hospitality with the lavishness of the resort lifestyle.

Street photography from Glasgow, Scotland.
This was captured in August 2020 before I had a single Covid-19 vaccine dose but, because of other simple public health measures, it was 'relatively' safe for me to continue to shoot street occasionally. Current rates are falling but are still at 1 in 40 infected in Scotland and any vaccine immunity now is almost entirely gone.
The government tells us it is all over. They "got Covid done"! We can get back to our lives! These are all narratives pushed by far right millionaire driven think-tanks. They want the workers in their offices and do not care, at the moment, of the human cost. The ERG, HART and similar have been pushing against scientific advice from SAGE and IndieSAGE from the start and the Government have been eager to take their advice above all else. Here are some important figures to remember:
England only - COVID hospital admissions in the first 60 days of summer for:
2022: 78,029
2021: 34,740
2020: 6,566
England only - COVID deaths* in the first 7 weeks of summer for:
2022: 6,344
2021: 2,202
2020: 1,144
*deaths where Covid-19 is mentioned as a contributory factor on the death certificate
Up to 14th Aug 2022 for the whole UK:
1 in 69 people have been admitted to hospital with Covid
1 in 331 has died of Covid (as a cause)
1 in 37 is suffering from Long Covid
1 in 3 people have been officially registered as a case at least once
an estimated 110,000 people have left the workforce due to Long Covid
These numbers are unsustainable!
Covid-19 is not a simple case like a cold or flu even though many are only affected like this during the initial acute infection phase. Covid-19 is more akin to an airborne AIDS because it ravages the bodies immune system and makes you more susceptible to a multitude of further infections. Degradation of immunity is long lasting and may even be permanent.
Covid-19 is more akin to a thrombotic vasculitis and causes widespread blood vessel damage resulting in increased risks of strokes, heart attacks and pulmonary embolism. Damage to all organs can occur from microclots. Recent studies have found that almost all infected children have shown permanent blood vessel damage.
Be on the right side of history and protect yourself from Covid-19 by wearing a well fitting N95/N99 mask (FFP2/FFP3) in indoor spaces. Insist on adequate ventilation and filtration of indoor air. Keep your distance outdoors. These are not restrictions, they are protections.
Stay safe my Flickr friends. Stay safe.
50,000 Covid deaths, countless lost hours of work, Long Covid and a collapsing health system. That is what "Living with Covid" looks like.
Friends, I've not been posting many photos because I was in the hospital with a pulmonary embolism from Friday June 26th to Monday June 29th. My first ever hospital stay. Took this photo the morning of my discharge with my old Canon PowerShot SX230 HS through the tinted window of my hospital room. The glass is double-paned & in need of cleaning on the outside. Still in recovery mode and will be for awhile.. Am going to do everything in my power to avoid another hospital stay. No fun.
"I think over again my small adventures.
My fears,
Those small ones that seemed so big,
For all the vital things
I had to get and reach.
And yet there is only one great thing,
The only thing,
To live to see the great day that dawns
And the light that fills the world."

It's been a long time since I did anything on Flickr. Last summer I spent mainly in Utrecht where my youngest son was treated for leukemia, it is going well now and he is cured.
3 months after healing, my wife suffered a pulmonary embolism and cardiac arrest, again weeks of uncertainty and misery.
Fortunately, I can say that both are now healthy and survived without damage.
It's spring, new beginnings, new life!
I haven't done a "real" herbal/dictionary image for a while.

Thanks for the well wishes & messages of support. A quick update (19 Feb 2023) : Martin is doing OK at the moment. His tumour is no worse but no better. We are still waiting for an appt to see the Pulmonary Consultant regarding his lung fibrosis. Life is manageable & we are able to get out & about, he can walk short distances without getting too breathless. There are so many people far worse off, we think of them & count our blessings.

Many say that my angel has a devilish look is possible ! ...They say the eyes are the mirror of the soul, well well I see many eyes and souls filled with ice, perhaps for that reason this angel look out this way.
With fever and pulmonary congestion that I have, excuse me that is not well done. But I had the need to upload it to share with you. All my love ! ! !

I was walking at Fairchild Garden enjoying a warm sunny Florida morning when I caught a glimpse of these Candy Corn sprays flying high over the Vine Pergola! They were waving and wandering, their looped ends balancing and rebalancing in the sun and breeze.
Fairchild Garden has a lengthy pergola built during the Roosevelt Administration that is covered in flowering vines and plants most of the year. Candy Corn, purple Clock Vine, pink Shower of Orchids.

Stop smoking, as this will only bring you health problems in addition to harming the environment.
The human lung is composed of small structures, the alveoli, responsible for the gas exchange of the blood. Blood flow and blood flow between heart and lungs are intense. Cigarette smoke directly affect the functioning of the heart-lung circulation. Over time the pulmonary alveolus are being cemented by the components of cigarette smoke, failing to do its function. The body will then be replaced by smaller tissue oxygenation, resulting in greater ease of tiredness for the smoker. Cigarette smoking also causes countless damage to the heart and lungs, such as heart attack and cancer.

🇬🇧 The San Bushmen are the emblematic people of a large part of southern Africa, mainly Botswana and Namibia.
Originally hunters and gatherers, they became sedentary over the centuries
Long discriminated against and driven out by the Dutch colonists (the Boers and the Huguenots) and then by the British colonists, there are now only around 100,000 of them left in the immense Kalahari desert.
Their language includes clicks, which are in fact tongue clicks.
In phonetics, a click is a non-pulmonary consonant, a sound produced with the tongue or lips, without the aid of the lungs.
Click languages are rare on a global scale, being found today only in certain languages of southern and eastern Africa, notably in South Africa, Tanzania, Botswana and Namibia.

Its summary: Former Surgeon General: Mainstream Medicine Has Endorsed Medical Marijuana
By Dr. Jocelyn Elders, AlterNet. Posted March 26, 2008.
An historic document from the 124,000-member American College of Physicians certifies the medical value of marijuana.
One of America's largest and most important groups of physicians has moved to cut through the clutter of political controversies over medical use of marijuana. Lawmakers and the public alike would do well to pay attention.
The American College of Physicians is the largest medical specialty organization and the second largest physician group in the United States. Its 124,000 members are doctors specializing in internal medicine and related subspecialties, including cardiology, neurology, pulmonary disease, oncology and infectious diseases. The College publishes Annals of Internal Medicine, the most widely cited medical specialty journal in the world.
In a landmark position paper released in February, these distinguished physicians are saying what many of us have been arguing for years: Most of our laws have gotten it wrong when it comes to medical marijuana, and it's time for public policy to get in step with science.
Right now, the laws of 38 states and the federal government bar use of marijuana as a medicine. Federal law classifies marijuana as a Schedule I drug, defined as having no accepted medical use and being unsafe for use even under medical supervision.
ACP's position paper urges "reclassification into a more appropriate schedule, given the scientific evidence regarding marijuana's safety and efficacy in some clinical conditions." The document goes on to call for protection of physicians' right to "prescribe or dispense medical marijuana in accordance with state law" and "strongly urges protection from civil or criminal penalties for patients who use medical marijuana as permitted under state laws."
ACP supports its position with 10 pages of scientific documentation and references. They cite data showing relief of the nausea, vomiting and wasting that can worsen the misery of cancer, AIDS and other diseases; of the pain and tremors associated with multiple sclerosis; and for relief of pain caused by a variety of other conditions. They note that marijuana in combination with some pharmaceuticals may produce more benefit than either drug alone.
ACP calls for more research, but then adds a critical point: In some areas, the efficacy of medical marijuana has already been established, and it's time for studies designed to determine the best dose and route of delivery.
The ACP position paper demolishes several myths, starting with the notion still proclaimed by some politicians that marijuana is unsafe for medical use. The College notes that the most serious objection to medical marijuana – potential harm to the lungs from smoking -- has largely been solved by a technology called vaporization, already proven in scientific studies.
The ACP position paper also explains that there is no reason to believe that protecting medical marijuana patients leads to increased drug abuse. "Marijuana has not been proven to be the cause or even the most significant predictor of serious drug abuse," the doctors write. "Opiates are highly addictive, yet medically effective ... There is no evidence to suggest that medical use of opiates has increased perception that their illicit use is safe or acceptable."
This is an historic document. Large medical associations are by their nature slow, cautious creatures that move only when the evidence is overwhelming. The evidence is indeed overwhelming that, as ACP put it, there is "a clear discord" between what research tells us and what our laws say about medical marijuana.
It appears that voters and lawmakers in a number of states will consider medical marijuana proposals this year, and Congress will again be asked to stop federal attempts to interfere with the 12 state medical marijuana laws already in place. It's time to end that "clear discord" and put science ahead
of politics.

We are NOT "post-pandemic" or "post-Covid" and I am sick of hearing this from main stream media, politicians and prominent businesses.
First, we cannot unilaterally declare that a pandemic is over due to the very nature of a pandemic.
Second, just looking at the month of JUNE to date, we have 10X the number of directly attributed Covid hospitalisations for 2022 than we did for the same period in 2021 or 2020.
Hospitalisations are rising 30-40% week on week at the moment. Why? We're facing a wave of Omicron BA.5 which is even more infectious than previous Omicron variants but, worryingly, doctors are reporting that it is infecting lower down into lung tissue as we saw with the Alpha wave. Secondary pneumonia is now a major issue again and hospitalisations are rising across ALL age groups. Omicron evades vaccine immunity and there is NO natural immunity to Omicron. People are being re-infected with Omicron with repeated infections reported as being worse and worse.
Ignoring the acute risks of Covid, of which there are many, there are now multiple wide ranging and conclusive studies by institutions such as Harvard that are showing that every single Covid infection, no matter how 'mild', is causing permanent internal damage.
Damage to the brain similar to that in Parkinson's Disease.
Damage to the pancreas causing onset of Diabetes.
Damage to lung tissue.
Damage to the gastrointestinal tract.
Damage to cardiovascular endothelium and clotting factors resulting in a 3X increased risk in heart attacks, strokes and pulmonary emboli for at least 6 months post-acute infection.
More importantly, it is causing degradation of your immunity. SARS2 causes reduction in your immunity and damage to T-cells similar to that of HIV, leaving you wide open to opportunistic infections that you would be unable to fight.
SARS2 infection prematurely ages you! Telomeres are the end protections of our chromosomes that you can think of as being similar to the end plastic pieces of a shoelace. These gradually degrade over our lifetimes as part of the ageing process. It is a known quantity and studies have shown that even mild infections of Covid are causing damage to the telomeres of our chromosomes equivalent to 10 years of biological ageing.
Early in the Covid story some people openly called it 'airborne AIDS' because some of the genetic code of the virus is identical to HIV. It may have been tongue-in-cheek at the time but Covid is causing this kind of damage.
Ask yourself why we have rising infectious diseases such as viral hepatitis in children, monkeypox and polio to name a few. We have a massive population with post-Covid immune deficiency.
Even the Bank of England has reported that we are facing a collapse of economy with increasing rates of 'long Covid' affecting the workforce.
All of this information is easy to find in peer reviewed medial journals at revered institutions such as Harvard or in The Lancet. SARS2, as it's predecessor SARS, is a multi-system disease spread by microscopic airborne aerosols.
Keep yourself safe because your government does not care about you.
Protection is not rocket science. Mask in poorly ventilated places and when indoors with an FFP2/3 well fitting mask. Open windows for ventilation and demand that workplaces and public facilities install suitable HEPA filtration. Washing your hands helps against many diseases but it will not stop you from catching Covid.

it is the largest species of gastropod Pulmonary terrestrial found in France. Its shell can reach 5 cm.
The large and globose shell has 5 to 6 turns of turns, and a large opening whose rim is thickened and often darker. The gregarious integument is quite thick and has furrows. Like other terrestrial snails, the Burgundy snail has 4 tentacles, 2 small ones down, and two longer ones upwards that carry the eyes.

In 1992, my newspaper embedded me with the Darc Star Everest expedition, the team were trying to scale the peak in winter, which was pretty crazy as the icy jet stream descends at that time of year to blast the summit.
One of the pieces of emergency kit we could have called on was this Gamow Bag being demonstrated here by the expedition doctor, Dr Christine a’Court. It’s a portable lightweight, rubberised bag that acts as a hyperbaric chamber into which a patient suffering high altitude pulmonary oedema or high altitude cerebral oedema is placed. It increases the ambient pressure and provides oxygen for a patient awaiting evacuation to a lower altitude. Thankfully, it wasn’t needed.
And the expedition . . . reached around 24,000 feet before a fierce storm blasted in from the Tibetan side and blew them off the mountain. They were lucky to escape with only their pride injured.

I was walking at Fairchild Garden and enjoying a warm sunny Florida morning when I caught a glimpse of these Candy Corn sprays flying high over the Vine Pergola!
Wagatea spicata is a robust woody climbing vine or small tree 10-20 ft. It grows in full sun and semi-shade and attracts bees, butterflies and hummingbirds.

Taken during happier times, beside the seal pool at Océanopolis, Brest, less than 18 months ago. We have visited this fantastic aquarium facility 3 times in the past 20 years; on family Eurocamp holidays with the kids & this latest time by ourselves (dare I say which I preferred? 😂) It's so easy to travel to France on the car ferry from Ireland. Happy Selfie Sunday!
Martin had sobering news from his oncologist regarding his latest CT scans. Whilst the main tumour in his lung is unchanged, the fibrosis/scarring is more advanced & irreversible, this is why he is so short of breath, even on mild exertion. Seemingly the radiotherapy & chemotherapy treatments that he's received to treat the cancer have inadvertently caused this lung damage. A bout of pneumonia back in October didn't help matters. There is no more cancer treatment available to him right now, so he's been referred back to the pulmonary specialists in Waterford hospital to see if there is any different medication for the fibrosis that might improve his quality of life going forward.
We love France & have high hopes of visiting again later this summer. You have to have hope. Watch this space.
Thank you to all my wonderful Flickr friends for your support, good wishes & prayers for Martin & myself. I am just back from attending my cousin's funeral in England & gradually catching up with everyone's photos.
