In Turkey, oil wresting is a totally legit sport between men. The rules are simple:
1 2
3 4
1. Get oiled up with lots of olive oil.
2. What happened after you got properly oiled up.
3. Wrestling in oil.
4. What it looks like when you have won.
It seems that Turkey is much of a destination for this year’s world tour. Yes indeed. SML needs to go and do some sports photography once in a while.

The Public Domain Review continues to dump out bizarre images onto its archive.
Shown here is a Japanese woodcut by Kamekichi Tsunajima titled “Ryūkō eigo zukushi”, or “A Fashionable Melange of English Words”. The print shows images of animals, activities and objects each with their Japanese and English names. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) some spelling mistakes have given rise to some interesting new activities such as “Refreshiug” and “Cuting Rice”, and the “Gaot”, “Hoise” and “Tea Po”. The introduction of activities (including the very Zen-like “Looking Moon”) give an interesting take on the often more object-orientated Western equivalents. Also worth noting the interesting additions of “Cross Child” rather than simply “Child” , and “Blank Book” rather than “Book”.

Last year, I asked a question on Quora asking why Apple ($AAPL) does not violate antitrust laws to default Safari as its browser on iOS devices while Microsoft ($MSFT) was fined billions for defaulting Internet Explorer in Windows. An anonymous user reasoned that Apple’s practice cannot be considered as monopolistic because it does not hold the majority share of the market [1].
A couple of days ago, Bloomberg reported that Apple has—for the first time—taken over Samsung to become the top mobile-phone maker in the U.S. [2]
Does this mean that it is finally possible to pressure Apple to give users the option to customize which browser is used by default on iOS? That would be very welcome, as Google ($GOOG) Chrome on iOS in my opinion gives a far better user experience than Safari, and frankly it is wasting a lot of time for me to be copying URLs from Safari just so that I can paste into Google Chrome.

1. Bloomberg: 2013-02-01: Apple Overtakes Samsung With 34% of U.S. Mobile Market: www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-02-01/apple-overtakes-samsung...
Apple Inc. (AAPL) passed Samsung (005930) Electronics Co. to become the top mobile-phone maker in the U.S. for the first time, scoring a victory in the companies’ battle for global dominance of the mobile-device market.
The U.S. market is a stronghold for Apple as it faces intensifying competition from Samsung and other smartphone makers using Google Inc. (GOOG)’s Android operating system. Samsung, which also makes cheaper handsets with less sophisticated functions, is the global leader in mobile phones with more than 100 million units sold last quarter.

Researchers find millions of vulnerable Net-facing printers, cams, and routers.
Security experts are advising that a networking feature known as Universal Plug and Play be disabled on routers, printers, and cameras, after finding it makes tens of millions of Internet-connected devices vulnerable to serious attack.
UPnP, as the feature is often abbreviated, is designed to make it easy for computers to connect to Internet gear by providing code that helps devices automatically discover each other over a local network. That often eliminates the hassle of figuring out how to configure devices the first time they're connected. But UPnP can also make life easier for attackers half a world away who want to compromise a home computer or breach a business network, according to a white paper published Tuesday by researchers from security firm Rapid7.

“How the Vatican built a secret property empire using Mussolini's millions”
m.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jan/21/vatican-secret-propert...
#finance #religion
Papacy used offshore tax havens to create £500m international portfolio, featuring real estate in UK, France and Switzerland
Behind a disguised offshore company structure, the church's international portfolio has been built up over the years, using cash originally handed over by Mussolini in return for papal recognition of the Italian fascist regime in 1929.
Since then the international value of Mussolini's nest-egg has mounted until it now exceeds £500m. In 2006, at the height of the recent property bubble, the Vatican spent £15m of those funds to buy 30 St James's Square. Other UK properties are at 168 New Bond Street and in the city of Coventry. It also owns blocks of flats in Paris and Switzerland.

“The 1st and 7th circuit decisions mean that it is now technically legal to record on-duty police officers in every state in the country. Unfortunately, people are still being arrested for it. Police officers who want to make an arrest to intimidate would-be videographers can always use broadly written laws that prohibit public disorder, interfering with a police officer, or similar ordinances that give law enforcement wide discretion.”
Recording police illegal in the US? Supreme Court’s refusal to review recent case suggests otherwise.

It all started when Humble was six, with a rather gleefully coloured rendition of the Jabberwocky. Recognizing this art thang as a means to get the attention he was otherwise too shy to seek, he stuck with it despite not being very good. In high school, he was somehow talked into drawing an ongoing comic strip for his school magazine. With free reign in regards to content, and a school-wide audience, how could he possibly say no? Tragically, Possum Man only survived to his second adventure, before Humble grew weary of everyone asking, “What’s up with that guys hands?” Or “Did you mean to draw her face like that?”. From there it was straight out of high school and off to university to start a Bachelor of Arts. He flunked out within his first two years, after coming to the enlightened conclusion that getting stoned all day might actually be a viable career path.
