On July 12th, 2021, the three-day old Moon was close to the brightest “star” in the sky - planet Venus - as seen in the western sky, an astronomical phenomenon called conjunction. These events, including the Moon and bright planets, are quite common. If you zoom a lot into the photo, you may see the much dimmer planet Mars, just to the left and a little below Venus - I could not see it with the naked eye, due to its proximity to the much brighter Venus. Of course, these three worlds were very much separated in space - at the time of this conjunction, the Moon was about 387,000 Km away from the Earth, Venus was about 214 million Km and Mars about 372 million Km away. And a little above and to left of the Moon, the star named Regulus (The Lion’s heart) lies at 78 light years away or about 2 billion times further than the Moon! Better to stop these calculations…enjoy your summer!
The proximity of these birches to the road means that they have been photographed thousands of times - but the light on them was lovely so I just had to stop. I know it is 'just a pretty picture', but such conditions have been all too rare for the past several weeks. As much as I can appreciate the 'moodiness' of photographs taken in foul weather, it was a joy to be out without the worry of being blown over and soaking wet.
One of my favorite destinations, in part because of proximity to my home, is Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Concord. Yesterday I was passing through the forest shortly before sunset, when the lighting is the most beautiful (in my opinion). Happy Sunday all!
This is part of the Station Tavern in Brimsdown , right next to the railway crossing and it's been shut for some time. Its proximity to the railway must mean it will go for housing.
Taken late at night, it has a haunted house feel.
Converted to monochrome, as seen out & about.
Wow, I wonder what broke through this fence...

In close proximity to the Helmarshausen monastery, which was founded at the end of the 10th century, is the Protestant town church. The town church is said to have been built in the Romanesque style in the 10th century. Like many historical buildings, the church has been rebuilt, renewed and restored several times over the years.
Meadow Pipit.

I wished I had a larger portfolio of these delightful birds. This species won my complete respect many years ago (at Parkgate) when I saw one pursued by a Merlin. The pipit dodged and weaved to evade the clasp of the Merlin's talons when both birds were in close proximity to each other. The battle for life probably only lasted a minute but for the pipit it must have felt like an eternity till the Merlin gave up. The aerial display by both birds was breathtaking. I have also seen Meadow Pipits feeding on the ground being watched by a perched Kestrel, however one pipit would perch near the Kestrel as an observer so it could alert the flock if the Kestrel moved. That pipit would get replaced by another when it wanted to feed. This was a clear and obvious display of co-operation requiring utmost trust.
A blue jay and a peregrine falcon. While a number of jays and starlings frequent our backyard, the bird of prey below is common to the area but not a regular. A mild morning (above freezing) of plus 3 Celsius/ 37.4 Fahrenheit.
A Brown Pelican cruising the shore in the yet undeveloped Texas State Park that happens to be the location of the Space X launch facility, a remarkable juxtaposition of a natural past and an industrial future in (too) close proximity.

European Robin (Erithacus rubecula) known simply as the Robin or Robin Redbreast in Ireland.
Robins are found throughout Ireland, and are common in towns and cities as well as in the country.
Unusual among birds the female robin also sings, and the robin is the only bird in Ireland that keeps singing right through the winter. Adult male and female Robins look identical, but immature birds lack the red breast and have spotted brown plumage with a scalloped golden pattern on the breast.
Robins are wonderful opportunists, and take full advantage of their proximity to people to supplement their diet – particularly during the winter months. When the days are cold and short, Robins will be among the first to visit our bird-tables and feeders to boost the meagre pickings available in nature. At any time of the year they will flit restlessly around gardeners feet as they turn the soil, eager to cash in on a free meal of earthworms and insect larvae. Robins get bolder with repeated offers of food, and some become so tame that they will even enter houses or feed from the hand.

This fox lay down on the roadway and its mate lay down even closer on the Cape Chase Road near Mistaken Point. This is a remarkable region, designated as a United Nations World Heritage Site, (greatest collection of multicellular fossils on earth), more than 90 shipwrecks (hence the title Mistaken Point), historical events such as its proximity to the sinking of the Titanic (nearest shore) and seabirds, as well as fisheries (Great Banks). All this makes the entire region of the Avalon Peninsula in south eastern Newfoundland and Labrador worth the effort to visit. For this fox, well, its old news. Subsequently, this fox has been identified as a subspecies of the Red Fox, called the Insular Newfoundland Red Fox.
Sorry, but I'm getting a little choked up as I'm sharing this picture 😢.I personally didn't know Larry John, but to those who did I share in their grief, pain, and sorrow for him.
The rose seen here, strangely enough, was the only flower I saw lying on the bronze parapet at the 9-11 Memorial. The parapet is on one of two huge, squarish reflecting pools at the site, and inscribed on it are some of the names of those who tragically died on 9-11.The Memorial is located just outside of the new One World Trade Center tower.I also visited the newly built transportation hub called The Oculus, the same day.All three places are in close proximity of each another.
Once, you had to pay to see the 9-11 Memorial and wait on a very long line, there were also check points if I recall. Now,you can walk directly to the memorial from the street.I didn't visit the museum part of the Memorial, located underground.Thank you all so much for your gracious comments and favorites, have a great day.

Magical discovery of Vultures in total freedom in Les Baronnies. Up to 7 individuals swirled above me, impossible to forget the sound of the wind in their feathers. An incredible proximity and a real privilege to attend the ball of these great Lords of the sky. I was afraid of them before meeting them, I do love them now!

I`ve never lived at canal or at such proximity to the stream or river, but somehow this image brings feelings of my childhood back.
Maybe it`s simplicity and calm of the scene, maybe the bright, clean colours. Or maybe...
Yes! This is it! There are NO people walking the canal bank with mobile in hands, "sharing" the moment online rather than living it and enjoying it (we met them just a few minutes later...).
Moaning of getting-old-man for today :-)
Enjoy the rest of the Sunday and have a great time!
A juvenile male Hooded Merganser, with yellow eyes and black bill, at the golden hour. Captured in close proximity at the Harlem Meer, Central Park, New York.
The proximity of church and mosque within the monastery is a symbol of the rapport between the Monks who are celibate and speak Greek and the local Bedouin who speak Arabic and live amongst their families. Both are very supportive of each other in this Eastern Orthodox monastery located on Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula. Seated at the base of Mount Sinai, St. Catherine’s and the surrounding area are hauntingly beautiful. We travelled there from Cairo by local bus, not sure how safe it would be to do that now. We climbed Mount Sinai overnight by the steep ascent, taking the 3750 steps. There is an easier camel trail route.
Raw, untreated Pano-Sabotage shot taken on my way home from work in July '18. The way the sunset was illuminating the trees and the streetlight against the azure of the sky made me stop for the shot.
Colour saturation was increased, some shadows lightened up, a bit of added contrast and the filtering out of too much white glare and that was it. No manipulation software was used.
The shot was taken in front of an Anglican church, St. Peter's and St. Simon's, a heritage building on Toronto's Bloor Street, very close to my home. I punned on the name of American painter Maxfield Parrish for two reasons - the colours and light in the trees and leaves reminds me a lot of his paintings AND I was standing in front of the famous parish of St. Simons ( as we locals call it ).

Good thing they built the Copenhagen Opera House near the power plant. It looks like they needed the proximity to pull all that power for the lights. Hope everyone is having a great start to the weekend. :-)
One unique aspect of Sólheimajökull is its proximity to the ocean. Unlike many other glaciers in Iceland, Sólheimajökull extends all the way down to the lowlands, allowing visitors to witness the dramatic contrast between the icy glacier and the black sand beaches. This creates a stunning and surreal landscape where the glacier meets the sea. The glacier also has a distinctive rugged and crevassed surface, making it a popular destination for ice climbing and glacier hiking. Sólheimajökull is known for its ice caves, which form within the glacier and provide a mesmerizing experience for visitors during winter. These unique features make Sólheimajökull a truly remarkable and unforgettable destination.
The black color of the ice at Sólheimajökull is due to the presence of volcanic ash and sediment. It is surrounded by volcanic activity. When volcanic eruptions occur, the ash and sediment are carried by the wind and eventually settle on the glacier's surface. Over time, this accumulation of volcanic debris gives the ice a black appearance. Additionally, the ash and sediment can also be carried by meltwater and deposited on the glacier, further contributing to its black color.
At the end of the movie, do you notice two hikers hiking on top of the glacier? 😉
