Guidebook cover for the Providence Anime Conference, a 21+ anime convention held in Providence, RI, October 3-5.

I was asked to make an illustration for the guidebook cover. Since PAC was a convention geared towards older anime fans, I referenced many series from the 60s, 70s and 80s in the design. The illustration is based off drawings a bored high school student would doodle while daydreaming about their favorite anime heroes.

Stephanie and Ashley

A photographic instalation by Mary Beth Meehan

"Stephanie tells me that she was born in Senegal and spoke only French as a child, but Ashley was born in Providence. They say that their family is originally form Cape Verde, an island chain off te coast of West Africa that was uninhabitted until the 1400s, when the Portuguese arrived with their african slaves. The two cultures mingled through the next generations, and then, in the 1800s, many Cape Verdeans migrated to Senegal, then a colony of France.

Stephanie and Ashley's forebears were among those imigrants, setting in Senegal for three generations. The two sisters tell of a rich heritage - including a Spanish great-grandfather and a French, great-great-grandfather - tracing the blodlines of the colonist, the slave, and the migrant right up to the present moment, in Rhode Island. It because of this history that America's obsession with black and white just doesn't make sense to them.

'Our family is so mixed that we come from a broader view of things', says Ashley, who was a history major at the University of Rhode Island. To her college graduation she wore the dress she's wearing now, brought to her by Stephanie from Senegal."

Providence Bay, Manitoulin Island ON 16 Jul 2024

I took this photo 10 years ago with a cannon point and shoot camera. I think this was in downtown Providence, RI. We had to make a delivery in the downtown area with an over the road tractor and a 53 foot trailer. It was a doozy of a day. This was one of the interesting buildings across the street from where we had to park the trailer while the mom and pop store off loaded our trailer on to the street.

Anchoring the corner of Oakdale Avenue and Mendell Street in San Francisco’s Bayview neighborhood, Providence Baptist Church is a bold and dignified example of mid-century modern religious architecture. With its angular roofline, asymmetrical bell tower, and spare white façade punctuated by tall stained-glass windows, the church is both architecturally striking and spiritually grounded.

Founded in 1944 and housed in this modernist structure since the 1960s, Providence Baptist Church has long been a pillar of the Bayview community—serving as a house of worship, cultural hub, and center of Black spiritual life in San Francisco. The sharply sloped roof and exposed wood beams inside hint at Scandinavian modernist influences, while the front tower—with its thin metal cross reaching skyward—adds a vertical flourish to the otherwise horizontal building.

Though simple in materials, the building commands attention through proportion and purpose. The entryway, flanked by clean signage and low-maintenance landscaping, opens onto a sanctuary known for both its intimacy and resonance. The structure’s minimalism allows the stained glass—each window a vertical strip of color and light—to take on added significance as a design feature and source of inspiration.

In the context of Bayview’s history of resilience and community strength, Providence Baptist stands as both a sanctuary and a symbol. It’s a place where faith meets form, and where architecture serves the spirit of service.

When I mention Providence Canyon to locals, I see them think for a moment before saying, "Oh, yeah, the little Grand Canyon." The massive gullies (the deepest being 150 feet) were caused by erosion due to poor farming practices in the 1800s.

A partial rainbow over Providence Marketplace in Mt Juliet, Tn.

11 days ago the temperature was in the low 20's (Fahrenheit) and I was in a winter coat, boots and gloves standing in 8 inches of snow. Today Im in shorts and the temperature was 75 Fahrenheit! Ridiculous!!

I took the picture of the rainbow when I was on my way home from a doctors appointment this afternoon. The news is saying we have severe storms coming and now have tornado watches for tonight! What a difference a week makes!

Providence Canyons were reportedly formed as result of poor agricultural practices in the 1800's. Eroded coastal plain sediments form canyons up to 150 feet deep. For more information:
