G-OBAF
British Aerospace BAe-146-100
E1004
British Air Ferries (BAF)
G-OBAF was noted at Riem on 6 January 1983 (from/to Warton) and on 9 January 1983. This was actually a British Aerospace demonstrator painted in BAF colours. The airframe returned in 1985 as G-BRJS with Dan-Air London.
Information from airhistory.net - thanks to Richard Vandervord and Paul Seymour:
An order by BAF for the 146 was never forthcoming, despite this demo paint job, although they did short-term lease some 200s and a 300 later on. This, the fourth-built 146, was later re-registered by the RAF, Dan-Air, Merpati, National Jet Systems and Debonair, eventually being broken up at Adelaide in 5.09 after use by Qantas Airlink in 2001 and return to National Jet.
First flew as G-OBAF in 1982. To the RAF as ZD695 in 1983. Returned to British Aerospace as G-BRJS in 1985. To Manx Airlines as G-OJET in 1987 then to Merpato Nusantara Airlines as PK-MTA in 1996, Debonair as G-DEBJ in 1988 and National Jet Systems as VH-NJA in 2000. Operated by Qantaslink from 2001. Scrapped at Adelaide in 2009.

November provided some stunning days of diving around the Channel Islands, and I was lucky enough to take advantage of it. I didn't realize how great the conditions were until I jumped in for the first dive, which was already set for macro. After some good macro shooting, I shifted over to wide-angle to really go to work.

----------------------------------------
Shishaldin Volcano is a subduction zone stratovolcano on Unimak Island in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska. Minor lava eruptions in the summit crater started on 12 July 2023. Twelve episodes of explosive ash eruptions have occurred since then, on 14 July, 15 July, 18 July, 22-23 July, 25-26 July, 4 August, 14-15 August, 25 August, 5 September, 15 September, 24 to 25 September, and 3 October 2023. Seen here is ash erupting from Shishaldin on 14 July 2023.
The Aleutian Arc is a subduction zone formed as the Pacific Plate dives underneath the North American Plate (this area is sometimes called the Bering Plate). The diving plate in subduction zones releases water at depth, which causes partial melting of overlying mantle rocks. The low-density melt rises and eventually reaches the surface, forming volcanoes. All subduction zones have volcanoes and frequent seismicity. Volcanoes in such settings tend to have explosive ash eruptions. Rocks and tephra deposits at subduction zone volcanoes are usually intermediate in composition - typically andesitic to dacitic.

9Q-COA
Armstrong Whitworth AW-660 Argosy T2

Otrag Range Air Services (ORAS)
„Jason“ covered in snow shortly after its first arrival at Munich-Riem (according to my notes, that was on 26 January 1977). Retains the cheatline and name from its RAF days as XR136. It would become a regular visitor during the year to come (I noted it last at MUC on 30 April 1978). Eventually scrapped at East Midlands Airport in June 1981.
Otrag Range Air Services (ORAS) was an airfreight operation to support the building of a missile launch facility in Zaire by the German „Orbital Transport- und Raketen Aktiengesellschaft“ (OTRAG or Otrag). Lots of information to be found on the web. There was even a film made about the project recently (Fly Rocket Fly, 2018).
More information from flickr - thanks to Dick Gilbert:
One of very few ex-RAF Argosies to get an afterlife, XR136 "Jason" was converted by Field Aircraft Services for ORAS (OTRAG Range Air Services) as 9Q-COA. OTRAG was a German rocket-launching company who intended to put small satellites into orbit from the Zaire plateau, because it was near the equator. The Argosy was considered an ideal aircraft for carrying rocket parts.
ORAS operated two of them (9Q-COA and 9Q-COE) but no rockets were ever launched and the aircraft mostly flew general charters in the region. In the end the firm ran out of money and Fields impounded 9Q-COA for unpaid maintenance bills. They never got paid and it was eventually scrapped at East Midlands in 1981.

September 1984 Interstate Airlines, October 1987 SE-IZU Falcon Air, March 1993 G-FIZU Hunting Cargo. May 1997 EI-CHY rr, December 1998 G-FIZU Atlantic Airlines. March 1999 Channel Express. September 2016 Buffalo Airways C-GIZU for spares.
From the excellent Martinair history in Flash 1978 no. 92:
"To bridge the period between fading out of the DC-7s and the arrival of all three DC-9s on order, an Electra was leased from KLM in April 1968. The lease was intended for a two years period but KLM’s opportunity to favourably dispose of its entire Electra inventory limited PH-LLG’s life with Martinair to nine months only."

A splash of winter sun provided a welcome break in the particularly miserable rainy weather earlier today, picking up the footpath railings along the Humber Bridge in East Yorkshire. You can also just make out the sunlight picking up the wet surface of the A15 dual carriageway snaking away from the bridge on the opposite shoreline in North Lincolnshire. A bit of a stern test for the lens shooting wideangle contre-jour so a fair few reflections and glare, but most I suspect originating from the ND64 filter I had on the front.

Taken on the first day of meteorological spring last year, this little vantage point below Binnein Mòr provided a pleasing frame for some very recognisable Lochaber giants.
These public toilets in the Queens gardens of Shepparton, Victoria, Australia, provided some not so light, but dark humour for the locals. The locals found it amusing that the council had installed these state-of-the-art self-cleaning toilets in the gardens. They seemed like a bright idea and although saving money and time for cleaning they lacked some artificial intelligence, or a couple of if then statements, if you are into programming. Although there is nothing funny about homelessness, a scenario like the auto wash scene in Fifth element occurred. Here is a link to the iconic scene www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkGsYEKOswU It is local legend or a Furphy en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furphy ) depending on who you talk to, that some poor homeless person seeking shelter, tried to sleep in them over night. Before going on, it should be said that most locals laughed at councils’ decision to install the state-of-the-art convenience, not at the fate of the homeless man that wanted a good night’s sleep, out of the elements. As the story would go, the man entered the toilets in the evening, unbeknownst to him, the toilets self-locked at a certain time, locking him inside the cubical. This might be scary enough, but apparently, the thing self-cleans all surfaces overnight. A very handy thing if you are trying to avoid the worst toilets in Scotland as in Trainspotting www.youtube.com/watch?v=P88cV5mFWoI but not so good, if you are locked in the facility, and must try to sleep, all night covered in high grade disinfectant. Apparently, no amount of screaming and yelling would help him as there was no one around to hear him. Don’t be frightened though if you find your self in need of a public convenience, as the issues have been solved, albeit after the fact.

EC-BSD 'M. Ribalta'
McDonnell Douglas DC-8-63

Aviaco
EC-BSD is coming in to land on Riem’s runway 25. The aircraft was noted at the airport on 5 November 1980, possibly the precise date for this shot. Aviaco appeared regularly at Riem with DC-8-63s in the early 1980s.
Information from frankfurt-aviation-friends.de:
EC-BSD made its first flight on 16 January 1970 before Iberia received it in December 1970. Named after the Spanish Baroque painter Francisco Ribalta, it served for the Spanish national carrier until May 1980, when it was leased to Aviaco. After the lease ended in December 1983, it was sold to leasing company IAL. Last operator of this aircraft was cargo airline Airborne Express, which used it between January 1992 and June 2002 as N281AX. Withdrawn from use in 2002 and later scrapped at Wilmington.

Euralair
F-BTDL was occasionally seen at Riem in the early 1970s and also operated several flights into Fürstenfeldbruck Air Base used as a relief airport for Riem during the 1972 Summer Olympics. This time, it had arrived on 27 February 1976 and left on 29 February 1976 - the day British Airways B747 G-AWNP was also noted at the airport.
Information from airliners.net (thanks to Richard Vandervord):
Originally intended for TWA, the first airline operator of this Caravelle was in fact Austrian who registered her as OE-LCU. To Euralair 1.72 and became F-BTDL, then sold to Air Martinique in 3.80 as F-OGJD. Bought by TAC Colombia 3.81 and airline renamed Aerocesar; to LAS 8.89 and last recorded as stored at Panama City in 12.93, presumed scrapped there.

This airframe was frequently seen at the airport during 1968, e.g. on 20 February, 5 May, 26 May, 16 June, 23 June and 30 June (dates from Klaus Held’s Riem chronicle). It returned still with Modern Air Transport, but re-registered as N5624 on 7 May 1972 and then as N990E with Nomads Travel club on 18 September 1978. It left Riem for the last time on 24 September 1978 after a 6-day stay.
This Convair 990A started out as N5607 with American Airlines in February 1962. It went on to Modern Air Transport in April 1967 as N5607 (later re-registered N5624), then to Nomads Travel Club as N990E in August 1975 and finally Galaxy Airlines and Christ is the Answer, still as N990E. F-BHRU “Poitou”
Sud SE-210 Caravelle III
58
Air France
F-BHRU is lined up for take-off on Riem’s runway 25. This Caravelle’s cockpit would later be preserved and used as a fixed-base simulator at Ismaning near Munich from 2015 (moved to Sweden in January 2022 and now in use at Bunge Flygmuseum, Fårösund, Sweden).
Information from flycaravelle.com:
F-BHRU “Poitou” construction number 58, flew for the first time from Toulouse Blagnac airport on November 3, 1960 and was in service with Air France until it was decommissioned on August 28, 1980 when ferried from Charles to Gaulle airport to Paris Orly airport.
After being scrapped between November 1980 and April 1981, the cockpit was stored in a training center for air traffic controllers at Orly for 13 years. There it was originally supposed to be converted into a simulator. The project that was started was never completed for financial reasons. The cockpit almost ended up in the scrap heap in 1993. It was accidentally discovered and rescued by a member of the French association “Jean Bapiste Salis” from la Ferté Alais near Paris.
In cooperation with the “Le Caravelle Club” in Stockholm, which owns the last functioning Caravelle, software and hardware developer cockpit-concept.de and our knowledge as commercial pilots, a true-to-the-original simulator has been created from the cockpit, which has been in use since October 2015 in Ismaning near Munich. It was moved from Munich to Gotland, Sweden in January 2022.

Collecting slides over the last 2.5 years or so has been an unexpectedly rewarding project. It has provided me with so much extra knowledge for my interest in local operations and for my model railroading, it has allowed me to revisit old memories, and it's just been really great.
I recently had another chance to revisit an event I never forgot about;
On Saturday August 10th 2002, I was in Brunswick with my grandma and grandpa watching trains that evening. We got a pizza and tailgated in the parking lot. I had just turned 14 and Brunswick was like a railfan mecca to me.
Towards the end of the evening, maybe around 930pm, a set of three engines consisting of a CSX C30-7, an exCR C36-7, and exCR SD60I #8750 backed out from the yard, across Maple Ave, and tied onto a set of orange ballast cars that had been sitting under the over pass. I think the cars had been sitting on either track 34 or the runaround. Shortly after, the CPL dwarf showed a medium clear from 4-runner to number two, and the ballast train pulled out of Brunswick. I remember seeing the glow inside the cab of 8750 from the computer screens. I want to say they called themselves W055 on the radio.
My grandmother (of all people) said "I bet we can beat them to Washington Grove" (near there house, where the train would pass eventually). Both myself and my grandpa told her there is no way we would beat the train; the trackage had a much shorter distance to cover to get to Washington Grove than we did. We'd be taking 340 out of Brunswick all the way to Frederick to meet I-270 south. Then we'd have to exit, and take some local streets to finally be trackside.
My grandmother, her lead foot, and us in tow flew down the highway in their 2000 Town and Country van. I had my scanner still on, but we were too far from the tracks to hear the train calling signals.
We crossed the grade crossing at Washington Grove, and sure enough there was a clear on #2 track at the Derwood Dip signal. By the time we turned into the gravel lot at the MARC station, the gates were going down behind us, and the bright lights of the eastbound were ripping into view in front of us. I remember throwing open my door as the train screamed by at track speed or close to it.
My grandmother was delighted in asserting her victory over beating the train from Brunswick to Washington Grove that night. We all had a good time, and she still talks about it to this day.
Fast forward almost 20 years to the day later, and I find a slide of that exact same train from the next day, Sunday 8-11-02. The train is seen tied down at Doswell Va on #4 track in the yard. The train was likely empty or mostly empty, and is staging at Doswell until a C&O crew would take it over the Piedmont Sub to Verdon for another load of ballast. My jaw hit the floor when I saw this slide while scrolling on ebay. Once again as life came full circle for me, I saw this slide while sitting on my own freight train stopped at the signal in Bayview. Dreams do come true I guess.
Objectively, the slide is nothing special; the train is stopped, headlights off....far track side, bottom of the wheels cut off....a little wonky on the composition...but to me, it's now one of my favorite slides.

The Cast of "Secret Lives" wear shoes provided by Heels, and we recently found Hollywood engenue, Miss Teddi Beres, on the sandlot of Secret Lives, and asked her about Heels.
This is what she had to say.
"When you have to go through as many wardrobe changes as I do, spontaneous shoes that compliment almost any outfit are what smart fashionistas choose.
And that's why I choose, Heels.
Heels has a stylish assortment of shoes and boots to compliment your feet and individual fashion sense -- and you won't have to buy a different pair for every outfit in your closet because so many fashionable Heels shoes will compliment a variety of outfits!
That's what I mean by, spontaneous.
But even if you do decide to buy them all, don't worry; Heels shoes are as attractive in price as they are on your feet! Being thrifty is being smart!
Plus, at a super low cost, as a Heels Group Member, you are treated to terrific gifts including shoes, jewelry, and more!

personally I like both but I tend to the previous one with more area and 'action' surrounding the tree

I'm super excited that Laowa have provided me with a pre-release version of their upcoming 100mm F/2.8 2X macro lens in Pentax K-Mount, for me to test out!
This is one of the larger of the local species of hoverflies, but exact species ID eludes me - perhaps Eristalis sp.?

This past holiday season the Providence and Worcester Railroad once again provided their passenger train and crew for the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council's extremely popular Polar Express trains with trains running and 3:30 and 6:30 PM Fri-Sun for a total of 42 sold out trips in 2024.
The train consist has just arrived from Worcester after deadheading south for the last time to begin the final weekend of performances. Bringing up the rear is PW 4007, a GE B40-8W blt. Apr. 1992 as Santa Fe 582, and one of three of the model on the roster acquired from BNSF by the then independent P&W in 2010. Above the train can be seen the historic depot built in 1882 by the original Providence and Worcester Railroad replacing one dating from the 1847 opening of the railroad. This view looks across aptly named Railroad Street at about MP 16.5 as measured from Providence Union Station.
The depot is contributing structure to the Woonsocket Main Street Historic District which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. From the NRHP nomination form:
Providence & Worcester Railroad Station 1882, John W. Ellis, architect: The original 1847 railroad depot burned and was replaced in 1882 with what was considered the most impressive depot on the P&W line. The new station is a rectangular, one-and-one-half-story, red brick Queen Anne building housing the main waiting room with a similarly designed baggage handling and service extension at the north end. The jerkin-head gable roofline is oriented parallel to the railroad tracks, and the building faces onto Depot Square with one end abutting Main Street.
Prominent features include a protective overhang integrated into the roof slope and supported on large, curved brackets, which runs around three sides of the main building and extension. The central entrances on both sides are located below a large cross gable with elaborate decorative brickwork and terra cotta ornamentation, stained-glass and ocular windows, and terra cotta finials. A square clock tower with a tall, pyramidal hip roof topped with a distinctive locomotive weathervane rises from the roof ridge between the gables. The narrow Main Street elevation has now-altered storefronts on the first floor and brickwork, stained-glass windows, and a large central oriel window on the upper floor. The east end of the Depot Square elevation is sheathed in modern vertical wood siding and has no openings, reflecting the fact that this was originally a party wall shared with the Edwards Block, a Second Empire building that was demolished in the 196Os. The former building site is neatly landscaped with terraces and evergreen and deciduous plants.
The P&W really was Rhode Island's own railroad. Chartered in both Rhode Island and Massachusetts in 1844 it opened for business on 43 miles between its namesake cities in 1847. Built along portions of the Blackstone Canal that was opened in 1828, the P&W replaced the waterway as the main artery of transportation in the historically significant Blackstone River Valley - the birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution.
The New Haven leased the P&W for 99 years in 1892 and that lease passed to the Penn Central in 1969. The PC intended to abandon the middle of the P&W and sever it as a through route when a group of dissident independent shareholders wrested control away from the giant carrier and began independent operations again. The P&W thrived on it's own for 43 years as a publicly traded company (I held a small equity position for many years) until being sold to Genessee & Wyoming in 2016. It's hard to see the P&W I loved and grew up with turn orange, but at least the rails remain and continue to thrive.

Thank you so much for any comments! I really appreciate it!
Hot Springs is home to the former Army/Navy Hospital, the first general hospital in the nation that provided treatment to both Army and Navy patients.
The dream of the Army/Navy Hospital came to be during a dinner party in the Palace Bathhouse in 1882. Senator John Logan declared Hot Springs to be “an ideal location for an institution of this character” and promised to introduce legislation for an appropriation upon his return to Washington, D.C. The Army/Navy Hospital opened to patients in January 1887 and was led by the Secretary of War, but control was handed off to the U.S. Army in 1957.
In the early 1930's, the original building was replaced with a brick-mortar and steel facility with 412 beds (as seen in the photograph above). It cost a mere $1.5 million, which would equal nearly $15 million in today’s market.
During World War II, the hospital was at its peak business, having become the army’s leading medical facility in the country for treating patients with arthritis. Even after the close of the war, the hospital continued to grow, serving more than 100,000 veterans by 1945.
In 1960, the hospital became a rehabilitation center and was run by the state of Arkansas until it finally closed for good in 2019. It continues to serve as one of the most interesting historical landmarks in the state.
Three bracketed photos were taken with a handheld Nikon D7200 and combined with Photomatix Pro to create this HDR image. Additional adjustments were made in Photoshop CS6.
