Ann Magnolias [?]

With beautiful four-inch-wide blossoms in striking shades of medium pink or reddish-purple, this is an elegant flower that blooms very early and gets up to ten feet in height.

Magnolia flowers belong to the Magnoliaceae family and have around 210 species. They’re considered as the most ancient flowering plants, appearing before bees did. Fossilised specimen of one type of magnolia dated 20 million years while another dates back 95 million years. [...]. It is believed that they have evolved to encourage pollination by beetles. The flowers don’t yield true nectar but protein-rich pollen. www.homestratosphere.com/types-of-magnolias/

Even if many people disgust the food of worms:

They are also available processed into flour.

The protein content is 2.5 times that of almonds.

- Compared to beef/pork/chicken

- they have a far better CO2 balance

- they have far less water requirement

- they have a much higher energy content (protein)

this photo has some aging to it. from San dimas horse stable. this stallion was a juvi. pure muscle and takes no animal protein. amazing species.

No, the yellow-jacket wasp has not been adopted by the bees, and has not decided to switch colonies. It is simply seeking a little protein at the expense of the honey bees. I saw a few wasps at the hives, but didn't see any successful predation.

A male Rufous Hummingbird, his face obscured by his extended wings (likely in an attempt to not offend any vegan friends), opens wide in the pursuit of protein in the form of a tiny, flying Gnat. Though the majority of their diet consists of nectar, hummingbirds regularly supplement protein through the consumption of a wide variety of small insects, many of which they catch in mid-flight due to their incredible speed and flight agility.

.

Northern Norway, the Arctic, Nigeria, what is the connection here?! The picture shows a scaffold like the ones you find everywhere in Lofoten, a scaffold on which fish is dried at the end of the Arctic winter. This so-called stockfish has hardly any residual moisture afterwards, up to 80% protein and, above all, has a long shelf life. A northern Norwegian tradition that is over 1000 years old. Locals like to eat stockfish, tourists buy it as a souvenir, but, you wouldn't believe it, 99% of the production goes to Nigeria. How does that happen? Late 1960s part of Nigeria, Biafra, declared independence. Nigeria suppressed this with armed force and isolated the breakaway region, which led to a devastating famine. Many European countries launched relief flights despite being attacked by MiGs and Ilyushins. Norway sent its "stockfish bombers" at the time. That's how the country acquired a taste for it. Stockfish is now an essential part of Nigerian cuisine.

Anna's Hummingbird

Henderson, Nevada

The Anna's Hummingbird (Calypte anna) is a dazzling, jewel-like bird native to the western United States, Mexico, and parts of Canada. Known for their iridescent plumage, the males sport brilliant metallic pink or red throats, known as gorgets, which shimmer in sunlight. Their heads can also display a vibrant pink crown, while the rest of their plumage is primarily green and gray. Females and juveniles lack the vivid head coloring but still have hints of iridescence on their throats.

These birds are small, measuring about 4 inches (10 cm) long with a wingspan of 4.7 inches (12 cm), yet their energy and agility are extraordinary. Anna's Hummingbirds are famed for their high-speed flight, including acrobatic dives during courtship, where males can reach speeds of nearly 50 mph (80 km/h).

Adaptable and vocal, they emit a sharp, metallic "chip" and a high-pitched whistle. They are frequent visitors to flowers, feeders, and gardens, sipping nectar with their long, specialized beaks and tongues, while also preying on tiny insects for protein. Unlike many hummingbirds, Anna’s Hummingbirds can stay in one area year-round, even in cooler climates, thanks to their ability to enter torpor—a state similar to hibernation—on cold nights.

Alfalfa is a common crop in my area, supplying high protein winter feed for livestock; honey bees love it, too. It self-seeds and thrives in my garden, where I always allow a few patches to mature. Here, a late summer flower head has attracted a Woodland Skipper butterfly.

According to my guide to prairie wildflowers, they are "typical legume flowers... with a prominent keel, borne in a tight raceme... the pistil is held in the petals of the keel and must be released or 'tripped' by foraging bees or other pollinating agents if seed is to develop." This is an introduced plant from Europe, "now so common it is considered wild." To this I will add that the local fields of alfalfa are largely left unsprayed, and so alfalfa honey from this part of the world is considered very pure. We have two commercial honey producers in Val Marie (pop. 100), and at least one other who keeps bees and pulls honey for his personal use.

Thanks to Ethan Winning for the ID on this attractive little visitor. Checking the range map, I found that the Woodland Skipper is indeed found as far north as extreme southwestern Saskatchewan - ie. where I live.

Man does not descend from the ape, for the simple reason that he is an ape himself ! 🤔

Its current species, Homo sapiens, is the only survivor of a genus (Homo) which belongs, with the genus Pan (chimpanzee, bonobo) and that of gorillas, to the subfamily of African great apes. Furthermore, analyzes and comparisons of gene and/or protein sequences tell us that humans and chimpanzees are closer relatives of each other than they are of any other species.

Their two lineages separated only 7 million years ago to evolve separately. They share a last common ancestor, but one does not "descend" from the other.

The Heliconius butterfly can live up to 9 months while neotropical butterflies normally live a couple weeks! They are able to do this because they increase their protein intake by digesting pollen on their proboscis.

Heliconius butterflies have two unique traits: pollen feeding and pupal-mating. Adult butterflies systematically collect pollen from flowers which they masticate on the proboscis to dissolve out amino acids. Since they do not need to store nutrients for egg and sperm production, caterpillars are able to develop rapidly allowing adults to have a greatly extended lifespan in the wild.

Pupal mating is a second unusual trait found in some Heliconius species. Males search for female pupae on larval food plants and sit on them. The next morning mating occurs before the female has completely emerged. Pupal-mating may enhance the possibility of intrageneric mimicry. Second, it may influence host-plant specialization, as pupal-mating species may displace other heliconiines from their hosts by interference competition.

About the name... Helicon is a mountain in southern Greece, in Boeotia, regarded in ancient Greece, as the source of poetry and inspiration. From it flowed the fountains of Aganippe and Hippocrene associated with Muses. The nine Muses are daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne, the goddess of memory. The Muses sat near the throne of Zeus, king of the gods, and sang of his greatness and the origin of the world.

Rio & Ginny our Quaker parrots love eating egg. It's a good source of protein so especially beneficial coming up to the breeding season. I hard boil a chicken egg & give them a small amount each day chopped up in a dish. I store the left over boiled egg in the fridge, each one lasts them about 4 days. For Macro Mondays theme "Egg" HMM!

Happy Macro Monday HMM !!

The White Rumped Mannikin is sometimes called a White Rumped Munia and they belong to the family of Waxbill Finches. The White Rumped Mannikins like open woodland, grassland and scrub and are also able to adapt to agricultural land use. These birds feed mainly on seeds and sometimes algae and it has been suggested that they obtain protein for their diet from the algae. They like moving through the undergrowth in groups but sometimes on their own. The nest they build are large domed grass structure in a tree or a bush but, they have been known to use other birds abandoned nests, and they lay anything from three to eight white eggs.
