A damp but colourful autumnal setting.

This canada goose was protecting her two goslings from a hawk that had tried twice to take one of her babies! The first time the hawk tried a bunch of black birds came to help by attacking the hawk. The second time, the goose took her goslings and came closer to me. I had to smile at the thought that she felt I would protect her and the goslings! There was no father goose around and I wonder if the reason she only had two goslings was because of the hawk!

Storing it on a porch behind bars... it ought to protect it from some weathering. It still managed a nice patina with a touch of history with the faded lettering (Ridley)

Happy Truck Thursday!

Cattle in the New Forest are allowed to roam freely. These two calves are new borns and they have not yet been ear tagged. Mum was very protective of them and they kept a wary eye on me at all times!

dedication

this picture is dedicated to the valiant, tireless and overworked women and men around the world who, at great risk to themselves and to their families and friends, fight, sacrifice and increasingly die heroically trying to treat, save, comfort and console the infected and keep safe their communities.

in this time of great human suffering, uncertainty and angst, my heart weeps for these amazing people with tears of profound awe, sorrow and, most of all, thanks.

please, if you are able, raise your voice and your wallet to support and fight hard from the outside so that those on the front lines inside can do their best safely with the personal protective equipment they terribly need and so-richly deserve.

life is short. please do not forget to share the love you have while you can.

finally, many thanks to each of you for your consistent, heartwarming friendship and kind words of support. you put smiles on my face each and every day and i am deeply appreciative.

keep the faith and be safe.

In life we always have this path ahead of us surrounded by danger. Nature's force somehow has this protective railing in each of our paths to protect us from falling depending on the choices we make. If we take the right path, we may just end up alright with beautiful memories. Have a good day all!

Escape from Lockdown.

I ventured out for the first time in months in search of the owls. Whilst the owls were nowhere to be seen, there was plenty of other wildlife to entertain me.

This curlew (presumably mum) didn't make the usual bolt into the distance. I soon found out the reason as she was protecting her young chicks. Sadly no pics of the chicks as I was unable to get a pic from the car.

Nice to hear my first cuckoos of the year as well. All in all a nice night out despite the lack of owls.

This Assyrian relief comes from the royal palace in Nimrud and is made of alabaster. The area in the middle of the piece looks like it is damaged, from this distance, but it is actually an area covered writing (in cuneiform) about the king Ashurnasirpal II, reigning 883-859 BC. He built Nimrud as a new capital of the Assyrian kingdom (in Assyrian called Kalḫu).

Now on display at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge.

We are headed back up to the Park in a few weeks for the elk rut and fall colors - should be amazing!

More stuff from the archives...we are hoping to have workable weather by the end of the week. It has been good to go through all my stuff at the end of the year and glean photos worth saving. The bird facing away is a Wurdemann's Heron which is out of its range and breeding with the local GBH population.

It was raining this evening so we've bring out this cute pair in the covered arena for them to move their legs a little. Look like that little filly have galloped too much and fell down in the sand, her mama came straight to her to comfort, what a protective mare.

OA is not bad for the bees, but it is not good for humans to breath this stuff in. This is the third and final treatment of integrated pest mgt. Final steps of winter setup is getting the insulation on the hive and adding a candy board.

Oxalic acid is a naturally occurring compound in many fruits, vegetables, nuts, and whole grains. While small amounts of oxalic acid are not harmful, this compound can inhibit the absorption of other important nutrients.

The respirator is mandatory, you are just stupid if you don't use one! The bee suit is mandatory, sometimes the guard bees get really upset!

This is a very small mushroom I found earlier this fall, that had a fern draped over top of it like it was protecting it from the elements. I tried to project that feeling into this shot. I have no idea on the ID of the mushroom, so any help in that area is greatly appreciated. :^)

I hope everyone enjoys this image! :^)

Sows with cubs are known to be quite protective with their cubs. Everyone knows not to mess with a mama bear ... well except for the big boars who roam around with one thing in mind. They will do anything to get some "alone time" with the females, including kill their cubs so that they will be available. It's honestly one of the things that I fear the most when I'm out photographing the sows with cubs. I remember one day seeing a sow with 2 or 3 young spring cubs fishing a stream, then they disappeared. A while later we could hear screaming of the little ones and I feared the worse. I asked our guide if he thought the cubs were being attacked by a big boar we had also seen in the vicinity. He said no because the crying out was so prolonged. If it had been a boar attacking a cub, it would have been over long ago. We eventually found the little cubs way up in a tree ... unharmed. Whoever said only black bears climb trees?

So, this brown bear cub in the image wasn't one of those cubs, but it is another one seeking the same safety from a board in the area. Its mom sensing the danger for her cubs will send them literally scurrying up the nearest tree for safety. She will then fiercely defend against the boar. When it's safe, she will give a signal to the cubs who will shimmy on down the tree to reunite with mom.

These cubs in the trees are one of the cutest sights ever. So on alert and anxious about the frantic activity going on. They never question mom when she alerts them and promptly obey. So darned smart and adorable to watch.

Well, it's Monday again. Only 1 more after today before 2022. Yikes, where is the time going?

There are at least ten different kinds of butterfly here on St Abbs Head, including the rare northern brown argus. The butterflies drink nectar from the flowers of the wild thyme and the caterpillars eat the leaves of rock rose. The areas in which these two plants grow are protected from sheep grazing by this fencing.
