The Spandau Citadel is a fortress in Berlin, Germany, one of the best-preserved Renaissance military structures of Europe. Built from 1559–94 atop a medieval fort on an island created by the meeting of the Havel and the Spree, it was designed to protect the town of Spandau, which is now part of Berlin. In recent years it has been used as a museum and has become a popular tourist spot.

A male Ruffed Grouse displaying for three hens perched up in a Balsam Fir Tree in the Hersey Lake Conservation Area located in the Township of Tisdale in the City of Timmins Northeastern Ontario Canada

Description

The scientific name for the Ruffed Grouse is Bonasa umbellus. Both terms are from the Latin: Bonasa means good when roasted and umbellus, a sunshade. This refers to the ruff or dark-coloured neck feathers that are particularly large in the male. When he is in display before the female, these are erected and surround his head almost like an umbrella. By nodding his head and ruffs, and spreading his tail and strutting, the male identifies himself to the female and encourages her advances.

The male Ruffed Grouse is about the size of a bantam chicken and weighs about 500 g. The females are smaller. Unlike the chicken, the grouse has a broad flat tail that is usually held down but that may be erected and spread into a half circle.

The dappled and barred plumage ranges in colour from pale grey through sombre red to rich mahogany. In the east, most grouse are predominantly grey, although some are red. Greys are in the majority in the central parts of the continent, and on the west coast most grouse are reddish brown.

The colours worn by the grouse are related to their habitat: the dark-coloured grouse inhabit dark forest, as on the coast; grey grouse live in lighter bush. This camouflage helps protect the grouse from their predators.

Males are hard to tell from females at a distance, but they are larger with larger ruffs and a longer tail. In the male the broad band of dark colour in the tail is usually unbroken.

The Ruffed Grouse is frequently called the “partridge.” This leads to confusion with the Gray, or Hungarian, Partridge, which was introduced to Canada from Europe. The Ruffed Grouse is only distantly related to the Gray Partridge, which is a bird of open areas, not woodlands.

Purple Sandpiper - Calidris Maritima

In Britain, these birds occur in winter in good numbers principally along the east and south coasts, where they favour rocky shorelines adjacent to the sea.

It is much rarer as a breeding bird, found only in a localised area of the Cairngorms National Park, where 1–3 pairs have bred since the 1970s. Records of breeding by this species in the UK are monitored and archived by the Rare Breeding Birds Panel.

They are late migrants and move to rocky ice-free Atlantic coasts in winter. most go no further south than North Carolina and northern Portugal. They are fairly gregarious, forming small flocks, often with ruddy turnstones. This species is tame and approachable.

Their breeding habitat is the northern tundra on Arctic islands in Canada and coastal areas in Greenland and northwestern Europe. They nest on the ground either elevated on rocks or in lower damp location. The males makes several scrapes; the female chooses one and lays 3 or 4 eggs. The male takes the major responsibility for incubation and tends the chicks. The young feed themselves.

An apparent case of hybridization between this species and the dunlin has been reported from England.

A couple of pairs nest in Scotland, but this species is mainly a winter visitor to almost any rocky coast in the UK. Most are found in Orkney, Shetland and along the east coast of Scotland and northern England - it is scarce south of Yorkshire, other than Devon and Cornwall. The breeding areas in Scotland are kept secret to protect the birds from egg thieves and disturbance.

It is listed on Schedule 1 of The Wildlife and Countryside Act.

Fietsbrug Tegenbosch

In order to improve the connection of the busy Anthony Fokkerweg to the A2, the cycle path on the viaduct had to disappear. For cyclists, a new 160-metre-long bicycle bridge was built over the A2 / N2, which is no less than fourteen lanes wide there, not counting the associated emergency lanes and (central) verges.

Basildon Park is a country house situated 2 miles south of Streatley in Berkshire. It is owned by the National Trust and is a Grade I listed building. The house was built between 1776 and 1783 for Sir Francis Sykes and designed by John Carr in the Palladian style at a time when Palladianism was giving way to the newly fashionable neoclassicism. Thus, the interiors are in a neoclassical "Adamesque" style.

Today, Basildon Park is as notable for its mid-twentieth-century renaissance and restoration, by Lord and Lady Iliffe, as it is for its architecture. In 1978, the Iliffes gave the house, together with its park and a large endowment for its upkeep, to the National Trust in the hope that "The National Trust will protect it and its park for future generations to enjoy."

This horizontal-shaped building boasts a construction quite untypical for an urban hotel. Minimalist in many ways, it looks pretty cold for my taste, yet it neatly fits in its natural environment, smartly protected from the strong regional wind and the outside noise by glass and concrete walls, which are different in size to provide a unique perspective. // Este edificio horizontal exhibe una construcción bastante atípica para ser un hotel urbano. Carrowmore (Irish: An Cheathrú Mhór, 'the great quarter') is a large group of megalithic monuments on the Cúil Irra peninsula near Sligo, Ireland. They were built in the 4th millennium BCE, during the Neolithic era. There are thirty surviving tombs, the earliest dating to around 3700 BCE, making Carrowmore the largest and among the oldest cemeteries of megalithic tombs in Ireland. It is considered one of the 'big four' along with Carrowkeel, Loughcrew and Brú na Bóinne. Carrowmore is the heart of an ancient ritual landscape which is dominated by the mountain of Knocknarea to the west. It is a protected National Monument.

Whilst not the biggest of the major glaciers in Los Glaciares National Park, Spegazzini Glacier is a hugely impressive sight, if for no other reason than the sheer size of its wall, which can tower as high as 135 metres (440 feet).

The Spegazzini glacier is one of the bordering glaciers between Argentina and Chile after the Agreement to specify the route of the limit from Mount Fitz Roy to Cerro Daudet in 1998 . The lower section of the glacier is located in Argentina, in the Lago Argentino department of the Santa Cruz province . Its source is in Chile, in the province of Último Esperanza in the Magallanes region . It is protected by the Bernardo O'Higgins and Los Glaciares National Parks.

It has an area of 134 km² and an average width of 1.5 km . The glacier originates from the South Patagonian ice field and flows eastward, reaching the Spegazzini arm of Lake Argentino . Its main characteristic is the great height of its front, which reaches 135 m, making it the highest in Los Glaciares National Park and one of the most important. The vegetation around it produces a marked contrast of colors, produced by glacier erosion, humidity, wind and the sun.

It owes its name to the botanist Carlos Luis Spegazzini , who was the first to study the local flora.

The glacier is fed by the Mayo Norte and Peineta glaciers. In addition, it has the peculiarity of not showing signs of retreat, which is a phenomenon common to large glaciers.

Sempervivum tectorum, the common houseleek, is a species of flowering plant in the family Crassulaceae, native to the mountains of southern Europe, cultivated in the whole of Europe for its appearance and a Roman tradition claiming that it protects buildings against lightning strikes.

The name Sempervivum has its origin in the Latin semper ('always') and vivus ('living'), because this perennial plant keeps its leaves in winter and is very resistant to difficult conditions of growth.

The specific epithet tectorum means 'of house roofs', referring to a traditional location for these plants.

The hairs that fringe the leaves can be seen on close inspection.

Great Egret heads towards a roosting area at the end of a long day of fishing.

Fort DeSoto

Some history from Audubon:

Nearly wiped out in the United States in the late 1800s, when its plumes were sought for use in fashion, the Great Egret made a comeback after early conservationists put a stop to the slaughter and protected its colonies; as a result, this bird became the symbol of the National Audubon Society.

This species will likely gain habitable areas as the earth warms - you can see the predictions here:
