DEMOLITION APPROVED 3/2/09

Sizzling Semiconductors commences as a screaming tone at the precise touch, of a radio-sensitive mineral. The workshop proposes the construction of oscillating instruments from scratch to investigate the multifaceted history of electronic parts, semiconductive stones, their presence in electronic devices, and environmental decay.

Following the path of Galena crystals from antiquity to the industrial revolution, we will observe how these crystals enabled the first communication network through their demodulating capacities and how our present computational devices became so dependent on rare earths. We will peak at crystal radio cults, amateur activities, and informational wars carried on waves, transmitted and received through stones.

Inspired by early 20th-century radio discoveries, we will create sounding electronic instruments out of scrap metal pieces and stones. Galvanized steel, a very usual leftover seems to bear inconspicuous proprieties once made incandescent: negative resistance peaks. Following Nyle Steiner’s experiments, we will enact negative resistance oscillators shaped as cat whiskers with components built from scratch. An old screw can become a surrogate for a transistor to scream modulated tones when treated properly.

The participants acquire knowledge in both technical and historical aspects of electronics to understand the methods of reinforcing communication networks out of leftovers. They will be guided to construct, bend, drill, solder, and reinvent circuitry. Heavy manual work is implied.

Governor Josh Shapiro and Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding toured Dickinson College Farm to highlight the Governor's energy plan and his budget proposal that would support innovative agriculture advancements happening across the Commonwealth in Pennsylvania's $132 billion agriculture industry that supports over 600,000 jobs.

Pennsylvania's agriculture industry is critical to the Commonwealth's economy - which is why the Governor's Economic Development Strategy puts agriculture front and center in the conversation and his 2024-25 budget proposes $10.3 million in agriculture innovation to support and attract new businesses and continue Pennsylvania's national legacy as an agricultural leader.

"Pennsylvania farmers know better than anyone how important it is to protect our planet and find sustainable ways to farm so we can continue our national legacy as an ag and energy leader. Dickinson College Farm is doing just that by taking a byproduct of dairy farming and producing clean, renewable energy," said Governor Josh Shapiro. "This is the kind of innovation we want to support in my Administration. That's why we made a $200,000 investment to help Dickinson build their digester, and it's why my new energy plan - that would cut costs for consumers, create jobs, and help us combat climate change - encourages more investment in similar clean energy sources. If we want to compete and succeed as a Commonwealth, then we have to invest in our farmers - and my energy plan and 2024-25 budget proposal will help us create real opportunity for our ag community."

NEoN proposes that artists are future media archaeologists, recorders of our current information-based society, and time-travelers highlighting the continued relevance of our long past. This exhibition will show how digital art and technology is understood now and will be in the future, in the creation of shared cultural experiences. NEoN anticipates that by putting artists’ concerns at the heart of our investigation of technological media, a more complex picture of the material culture of the digital age will emerge.

Join us as we dig for the digital, brush the dirt off the non-material, and excavate the Internet.
