In motion picture theater the film is actually placed on a "platter" system as opposed to a big, vertical reel (like a home 8mm film projector might use).

The film is open and exposed to the environment of the booth - so it's important it's treated carefully and conditions are controlled.

The platters spin and a center set of rollers and attenuaters control the speed of rotation as the film is pulled through the rollers, across open space to a set of rollers on a center-column, across more open space to the projector itself.

The projector runs the 35mm film at 32 frames per second through a series of intricate rollers and guides - then back to the platter system where it's rolled up onto another platter.

When it's time for that movie to run again - THAT platter becomes the feed for the movie - and the whole process is reversed - alternating feed and take-up platters.

We also have a third-platter on every projector which allows us to do "double features" in each theater house. Two different films will occupy two of the platters while one remains free for takeup. A careful system of feed/takeup alternations allow one projector to rotate through two movies all day long and never have to remove the film from the system.

A Kodak Carousel Slide Projector, that I sold on eBay about 5 years ago.

I shouldn't have been so surprised how small the packaging was.

CONTAINER [DE]

Minus + Raster-Noton (Ft. Richie Hawtin, Alva Noto, Byetone and Gaiser)

Friday 00:30 - 05:00

Paard van Troje - Main Hall

Container is a collaborative night of Minus & Raster-Noton featuring performances by and jam sessions between Richie Hawtin [CA/DE], Alva Noto [DE], Byetone [DE], Gaise [US/DE] and an ambient dj set from Matthew Hawtin [CA].

Container debuted to a packed WMF club last year in Berlin and we are thrilled to premiere this unique event in the Netherlands. Nine projectors fill three walls with immersive visuals from the Raster-Noton (including Carsten Nicolai's moiré pattern explorations featured in Grid Index) and Minus teams highlighting the integral role of graphics in the output of both labels.

Minus and Raster-Noton, two of electronic music's most respected labels, have each carved out clear and powerful positions over the last decade - both drawing on minimalism in sound design and aesthetics to define strong identities in the sea of club music noise. Their paralleled approaches temporarily mesh in this new performance-collaboration, which will feature solo sets from each artist as well as a special not-to-be-missed group performance.

Minus was founded in 1998 by head Richie Hawtin aka Plastikman, a Canadian musician and DJ who was part of Detroit's 'second wave' of techno artists known for abstract, minimal techno. Raster-Noton - archiv für ton und nichtton - is an imprint founded by Carsten Nicolai (Alva Noto), Olaf Bender (Byetone) and Frank Bretschneider and based in Chemnitz, Germany. The label's collective aesthetic is one of stripped, rhythm driven music running the gamut of dark experimental to pop.

Apparently - I am a Kodak Junkie too! I was supposed to help Dad find more room in the barn - but could not recommend he let go of these gems - we sent two to the recycling department - and kept three - the keepers all work!

A friend of mine has some old cinema projectors that he uses to show movies in his backyard. Pretty neat!

This shot is of the projector just prior to showing a movie. It's aimed out of a window and if you look through the projection window you can just make out the screen in the distance.
