Twenty-one industry project managers from the Georgia Department of Economic Development and Georgia Power recently visited the Athens area as part of a two-day bus tour of the region.

“Project Managers serve as the first point of contact for new industry looking to locate in the state of Georgia, so it’s important for them to experience a community’s cultural amenities first hand,” Ryan Moore, director of the Athens-Clarke County economic development department said in a statement.

While in Athens, the group went to a reception sponsored by the University of Georgia and dinner on The Classic Center Theatre stage with entertainment by Circle Ensemble Theatre and the band Saint Francis. The Athens-Clarke County Economic Development Department and Georgia Power coordinated to provide the dinner and entertainment. The trip also included a discussion with Mayor Nancy Denson on Athens-Clarke County as a location of choice for various industries and educational leaders spoke to the group about the Athens’ workforce and educational assets. It also included a bus tour of the area.

The regional bus tour, organized by Georgia Power, visited several northeast Georgia cities, including Gainesville, Cornelia and Hartwell.

Twenty-one industry project managers from the Georgia Department of Economic Development and Georgia Power recently visited the Athens area as part of a two-day bus tour of the region.

“Project Managers serve as the first point of contact for new industry looking to locate in the state of Georgia, so it’s important for them to experience a community’s cultural amenities first hand,” Ryan Moore, director of the Athens-Clarke County economic development department said in a statement.

While in Athens, the group went to a reception sponsored by the University of Georgia and dinner on The Classic Center Theatre stage with entertainment by Circle Ensemble Theatre and the band Saint Francis. The Athens-Clarke County Economic Development Department and Georgia Power coordinated to provide the dinner and entertainment. The trip also included a discussion with Mayor Nancy Denson on Athens-Clarke County as a location of choice for various industries and educational leaders spoke to the group about the Athens’ workforce and educational assets. It also included a bus tour of the area.

The regional bus tour, organized by Georgia Power, visited several northeast Georgia cities, including Gainesville, Cornelia and Hartwell.

Marc werkt sinds zijn afstudeerstage in 1993 bij Bibliotheek Vlissingen als beleidsadviseur digitale diensten, marketing & onderzoek. Hij heeft sindsdien verantwoordelijkheden gekregen op zowel lokaal, provinciaal en landelijk bibliotheekterrein. Collega’s omschrijven hem als een ervaren en serieuze marketeer die zijn werk met veel inzet uitvoert.

Na commerciële economie gestudeerd te hebben aan de Hogeschool Zeeland, volgde Marc de universitaire opleiding Communicatiewetenschap in Amsterdam. Voor zijn afstudeerstage kwam hij terecht bij Bibliotheek Vlissingen, waar hij een scriptie maakte over de marketingactiviteiten van de Bibliotheek.

Terugverdienen

‘‘Tijdens mijn stage deed ik veel dingen in de onderzoeksfeer, bijvoorbeeld klantenonderzoek, statistiek en analyse van bevolkingsdatabases. Toen ik mijn stage succesvol afrondde was er in eerste instantie helaas geen ruimte om verder bij de Bibliotheek te werken’’ vertelt Marc. ‘‘Maar omdat ik veel interessante werkzaamheden kon verrichten, hebben we een constructie bedacht waarmee ik mezelf kon terugverdienen en dus de mogelijkheid had om bij de Bibliotheek te blijven.’’

Stadsmonitor

In de daaropvolgende jaren heeft Marc StadsMonitor Vlissingen opgericht, de statistiek- en onderzoeksafdeling van de Bibliotheek. ‘‘De Bibliotheek in Vlissingen was de eerste in Nederland die de uitvoering en verwerking van het standaard klant- en medewerkersonderzoek landelijk aanbood voor alle Bibliotheken. Naast het gestandaardiseerde onderzoek werd ook veel specifiek onderzoek uitgevoerd voor Bibliotheken in Zeeland en de gemeenten Vlissingen en Middelburg.’’

Projecten

Marc’s werk ging niet onopgemerkt voorbij en er werden steeds meer verantwoordelijkheden aan hem toevertrouwd. Marc heeft aan een verscheidenheid aan projecten meegewerkt en vervulde dan de rol van account- of projectmanager. Zo zit hij bijvoorbeeld in het landelijk Campagne- en Positioneringsteam van de Vereniging van Openbare Bibliotheken. ‘‘Dit team toetst de campagnes van onder andere het CPNB (zoals bijvoorbeeld de Kinderboekenweek) aan de doelstellingen van de bibliotheekbranche en fungeert verder als overlegpartner en aanspreekpunt.’’

Een andere taak waar Marc zich op het moment mee bezighoudt is het herpositioneren van de Bibliotheek. ‘‘De Bibliotheek mag eigenlijk niet meer gezien worden als een gebouw waar je enkel en alleen boeken kunt lenen. Samen met de branchevereniging van de openbare bibliotheken wil ik graag meehelpen aan het omvormen van het ‘boeken-imago’ van de Bibliotheek in dat van ‘partner in persoonlijke ontwikkeling’.’’

Toekomst

Marc ziet zeker kansen binnen zijn vakgebied bij de Bibliotheek, voor nu en later. ‘‘Het is de bedoeling dat de maatschappelijke waarde van de Bibliotheek beter aangetoond wordt. Het moet een waardevolle instelling blijven voor alle soorten mensen, zowel jong als oud. We hebben de mogelijkheid een totaal andere Bibliotheek neer te zetten, meer gericht op deze tijd. Ik hoop ook dat we een duidelijk marketingbeleid kunnen neerzetten, zodat we de wensen en behoeften van de bezoekers beter op elkaar kunnen afstemmen.’’

Ondanks bezuinigingen hoopt Marc op een positieve toekomst voor Bibliotheek Vlissingen. ‘‘Ik hoop op een volwaardige Bibliotheek, ook al zal die onoverkomelijk kleiner zijn. Om dat te bereiken is het wel belangrijk dat de politiek de meerwaarde van de Bibliotheek inziet.’’

Boekentips

Momenteel is Marc bezig met de historische roman ‘De Naam van de Roos’ van Umberto Eco. ‘‘Voor mij is de sfeer in een boek altijd heel belangrijk. Daarnaast vind ik de inhoud van het verhaal gewoon erg boeiend.’’

De favoriete boeken van Marc zijn Lord of the Rings van J.R.R Tolkien en ‘Hyperion’ van Dan Simmons. ‘‘Ik ben gek op fantasy en science fiction. Liefhebbers van deze genres kan ik deze boeken zeker aanraden.’’

Twenty-one industry project managers from the Georgia Department of Economic Development and Georgia Power recently visited the Athens area as part of a two-day bus tour of the region.

“Project Managers serve as the first point of contact for new industry looking to locate in the state of Georgia, so it’s important for them to experience a community’s cultural amenities first hand,” Ryan Moore, director of the Athens-Clarke County economic development department said in a statement.

While in Athens, the group went to a reception sponsored by the University of Georgia and dinner on The Classic Center Theatre stage with entertainment by Circle Ensemble Theatre and the band Saint Francis. The Athens-Clarke County Economic Development Department and Georgia Power coordinated to provide the dinner and entertainment. The trip also included a discussion with Mayor Nancy Denson on Athens-Clarke County as a location of choice for various industries and educational leaders spoke to the group about the Athens’ workforce and educational assets. It also included a bus tour of the area.

The regional bus tour, organized by Georgia Power, visited several northeast Georgia cities, including Gainesville, Cornelia and Hartwell.
