This is probably one of my favorite Christmas ornaments. My sister and I grew up in the magic of Christmas, and as we grew older we never lost our love for the season. My sister always over-did Christmas. Decorating was a week-long event in her house, filled with staging areas and project plans.

I miss my sister most this time of year, but I always look and see that she is here with me, always a part of Christmas.

The Church of the Holy Family (in Catalan Expiatori Temple of the Sagrada Familia ), known simply as the Sagrada Familia , is a Roman Catholic basilica in Barcelona ( Spain ) designed by architect Antoni Gaudí. It began in 1882 , is still under construction ( February 2014 ) . It is the masterpiece of Gaudí , and the greatest exponent of Catalan modernist architecture . According to data from 2011 , is the most visited monument in Spain , with 3.2 million visitors, followed by the Museo del Prado ( 2.9 million) and the Alhambra in Granada ( 2.3 ) .

Construction began in the Gothic style , but , assuming the Gaudí project in 1883 , was completely redesigned . As usually proceed from general building sketches improvised construction as it progressed . Gaudí took over the project with only 31, and he dedicated the rest of his life , the last fifteen exclusive .

One of their most innovative ideas was the design of high circular conical towers that stand on targeted websites, and become narrower with height. The projected with a Parabolic twist, which gives an upward trend across the façade , favored by many windows that pierce the tower following spiral shapes .

The temple, when completed , will have 18 towers , four in each of the three facades and domes mode , a system will have six towers , with the central dome - tower dedicated to Jesus 170 meters high , four others around it, dedicated to the evangelists , and a second dome dedicated to the Virgin . Both the exterior and the interior are solved with an original construction system based on formal geometry.

In 1926 , when Gaudí died , only he had built a tower. The only building project plans and a model in plaster was badly damaged during the war Civil.3 However, since then have continued without interruption works were preserved : now are ended portals Birth and Passion , and has Glory begun , has covered the entire interior space, and laid the foundations of the six central towers .

The work performed Gaudí , ie , the Nativity façade and crypt , was listed in 2005 by UNESCO as World Heritage Site Site "Works of Antoni Gaudí ". The temple was consecrated and declared a minor basilica on November 7, 2010 by Pope Benedict XVI.

Another Slow year. I am particularly happy with Branwen (right). I spent several months working on this project off and on, and the result I can say is one of my better attempts at utilizing mostly system parts to make a poseable figure. Given some upcoming changes in my living situation, I expect to be able to pursue this hobby far more than I have been able to as of late. Got some projects planned, and I'm interested in trying some new things going into the new decade!

Given the current state of Flickr, I'm uncertain if I will be able to continue posting here (if you've seen the emails you know what I'm talking about). I will update any platform changes if needed.

Happy New Year!

I built this little pillar drill a few years back. Drawings, castings and bar stock are from Stuart Models. Fun to make, there is a lot of friction in the wire spring drive belt. This model will become a part of the steam driven Victorian line shaft workshop I'm building in about 1/8" scale. At some time, I plan to make an alteration to this and convert the angle dive from spring belt to a bevel geared drive at 90 degrees. All in the master project plan..!

African Bull Elephant

Designed by me..made by me Q

Baking paper 120cm x 33cm rectangle for the head, ears and trunk, a small piece of baking paper for the tusks. I could have made it with one single sheet but the tusks were too small. Im quite happy with the shaping and I enjoyed making this immensely.

I also made a display case for it so can be hung on a wall to stop it getting dusty.

This is a present for the Mrs..she loves elephants and is originally from South Africa so she's feeling a bit home sick at the moment so I hope this reminds her a little of home.

I have an eveb bigger project planned as soon as I have the time, going to combine all I've learned from shaping paper with all I've learn making the Hummingbirds to make a dinosaur that I've been fascinated with for a few years now so keep your eyes peeled for it !!!

Let me know what you think of it guys !

Many thanks and Merry Christmas to you all !

managed to destroy my 50mm. Yes, the one I just got a couple weeks ago. Here's a pic, though, taken with just the rear elements still in place. Front elements were in my bag...

I'm keeping the lens, and now have a project planned with it. Incredibly I've already gotten print requests, so guess those just might be coming too...

Merton says the true solitary “is called to the nakedness and hunger of a more primitive and honest condition. The condition of a stranger (xeniteia [the word Merton uses]) and a wanderer on the face of the earth, who has been called out of what was familiar . . . in order to seek strangely and painfully after what he knows not” (DQ 198)...

... “In the eyes of conformist society, the hermit is nothing but a failure. . . . [The hermit] is outside all our projects, plans, assemblies, movements” (DQ 199). And this, of course, is the point.

Let me start with some background info of my recent trip to the states, this particular image and the story behind it.

So we (me and Maud) have been planning this trip for 'ages'. Always had the US west coast on our list, with especially Seattle and San Francisco. Now if you fly close to 5000 miles for a trip, you don't just visit Seattle and SF, you make it a trip to remember.

Why this trip?

Ok so these locations didn't appear on our list overnight. Our interest grew from stories we have heard from others and images or movies we have seen before.

Having visited a few large cities on the US east coast before, the immensity of some of those cities always fascinated me. Because on every ft² there's a story to observe and shelters a potential good photograph. Especially when i am travelling with my camera to capture a scene i am always searching for those interesting stories. Sometimes i try to incorporate one story, and sometimes multiple, as i did in this image.

So what is key with this trip you did?

PLAN AHEAD!

How long?

Well let's say a year?!

And how do you do that?

Ever since we have good informative online platforms as TripAdvisor, Yelp, Google Maps, planning has become a breeze. Where you needed a travel agent before for such a trip (unless you were one of those ‘let’s see where we’ll strand’ backpack hostel hippies, no offense), it is all to be found on internet these days. As long as you put time and effort in planning.

So how did you capture this image and why?

Ok so, i had a few so called ‘Projects’ planned on our trip. One was from the Seattle Skyline, and with luck, with Mt. Rainier in the back. ‘Good luck with that’ is what we’ve been told by numerous people before. No idea how realistic that wish was going to be.

Two weeks prior to our departure to Seattle, i checked the weather daily and what it showed wasn’t very promising to say the least. Upon arrival it was grey, cold and rainy. A salesperson we spoke with in the T-Mobile store the first day we arrived said ‘Well, you’re from Holland, so you’ve got to be used to this type of weather, right?’ Yes, used to, but not welcome during our stay, especially when it’s overcast. Now you might think, you prepped for this trip right? Yes we did, and i kind of knew that Seattle was called the city of rain for a reason.

Then it continued to drizzle for days, overcast, windy, your typical Dutch weather indeed...

But you just hope for the best (and in a way, expect miracles will happen). Well, it seems that on the last night of our stay in Seattle, when we had just a single night booked at a strategically chosen Airbnb location close to famous Kerry Park, where this image was taken, i was making some scrambled eggs in the morning and Maud asked me, are we going down to KP to check out if we have a better chance today? (Yes, we took an Uber before to that spot to scout the area for composition and did some twilight test shots) I looked out of the window, where we could see just a patch of clouds above the needle turning purple i said, ‘leave the eggs, we’re going NOW!’ So bags and tripods packed and off we went...

And what a display unfolded there! Amazing views of the skyline and Mt. Rainier for 20 minutes. And we had a blast!

There were a few local photographers there as well that early where we catched a conversation where someone said ‘This is probably the best sunrise we had in months!’ So we were so thrilled that everything fell into place that morning. Sometimes you need a little luck on your side.

It was a perfect start of our trip.

Mission 1; Accomplished!

For the 30th anniversary of one of the most iconic images taken by NASA's Voyager mission, this is a new version of the image known as "the Pale Blue Dot."

Planet Earth is visible as a bright speck within the sunbeam just right of center and appears softly blue, as in the original version published in 1990.

This updated version uses modern image-processing software and techniques to revisit the well-known Voyager view while attempting to respect the original data and intent of those who planned the images.

In 1990, the Voyager project planned to shut off the Voyager 1 spacecraft's imaging cameras to conserve power and because the probe, along with its sibling Voyager 2, would not fly close enough to any other objects to take pictures. Before the shutdown, the mission commanded the probe to take a series of 60 images designed to produce what they termed the "Family Portrait of the Solar System." Executed on Valentine's Day 1990, this sequence returned images for making color views of six of the solar system's planets and also imaged the Sun in monochrome.

The popular name of this view is traced to the title of the 1994 book by Voyager imaging scientist Carl Sagan, who originated the idea of using Voyager's cameras to image the distant Earth and played a critical role in enabling the family portrait images to be taken.

British postcard in the Picturegoer Series, London, no. 1219. Photo: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

The Marx Brothers was the name for a group of American-Jewish comedians from the first half of the 20th century who were actually brothers. Their career started in theatre, but they became world-famous through their films. They are known for their wild, anarchic and often surrealist humour. Their jokes consist of slapstick, but also puns and intelligent dialogue. With their rebellious jokes, they were the forerunners of generations of anti-sentimental comedians. Five brothers together formed The Marx Brothers, even though the five of them never actually performed at the same time: Harpo, Chico, Groucho, Gummo and Zeppo.

The eldest brother, Chico (1887-1961) was born Leonard Marx. Manfred was actually the eldest, but he died as a child. Chico was the one who decided to make musical comedies with his other brothers. At the time, he had learnt an Italian accent to convince any anti-Semites in the neighbourhood that he was Italian and not a Jew. This accent, along with his talent as a piano player, became one of his trademarks. In the films, he usually fulfilled the role of a sly and shady con man, the confidant of Harpo, a confident pianist and the sceptical assistant of Groucho.

Harpo (1888-1964) was born Adolph and changed his name to Arthur in WWI because he found the name too German. As an actor, Harpo played the role of a mute, who never speaks but expresses himself through sign language, whistling and using his horn. Like a cross between a child and a wild beast, he sets everything in motion, harassing everyone, pulling the most peculiar things out of his coat (such as a candle burning on two sides, a coiled rope, a pin-up poster, etc.), and chasing women with his horn. His pseudonym "Harpo" was derived from the fact that he played the harp, for which there was a musical interlude in almost every film.

Groucho (1890-1977) was born Julius Henry Marx. His trademarks were his grin, thick cigar, waddling gait and sarcastic remarks, insults and puns. In the films, he was constantly trying to get money or women, talking everyone under the table with his witty and intelligent remarks. He was also a singer and some of his songs have become classics, such as 'Lydia the Tattooed Lady'.

Gummo (1892-1977) was born Milton and was the least-known Marx Brother. He was the one who first performed with Groucho, but before the big Broadway success came he had stopped acting. For years, he was his brother's manager.

Zeppo (1901-1979) was born Herbert Marx and was the youngest of the Marx Brothers. He took over the role of Gummo when the latter quit. Zeppo was the romantic declarer. Though he could take on more versatile roles, he was typecast as the most serious of the four.

The Marx Brothers were the five surviving sons of Sam and Minnie Marx. The family lived in Yorkville on New York's Upper East Side, a neighbourhood sandwiched between the Irish-German and Italian quarters. Their career already began at the beginning of the century in vaudeville shows, with which their maternal uncle, Al Shean, had already been successful. Groucho was the first to embark on a career on stage, but initially with very little success. Their mother and sister also appeared on stage with their sons at times. However, the focus soon shifted from music and singing with humorous segues to comedy with musical interludes. The different roles of musicians and comedians crystallised relatively early. While Chico developed the stereotype of the womaniser with an Italian accent who was always chasing the chicks, Groucho dropped his accent as a German during the First World War due to a lack of popularity. Harpo remained speechless on stage, as he had the greatest successes playing his jokes as a mime in a red or, in films, blond curly wig, or playing his grandmother's old harp. A classroom sketch in which Groucho tried to teach his brothers evolved into the comedy show 'I'll Say She Is which became their first success on Bradway and in England. This was followed by two more Broadway hits: 'The Cocoanuts' and 'Animal Crackers'. The Marx Brothers' shows became popular at a time when Hollywood was experiencing the transition from silent film to talkies. The brothers signed a contract with Paramount Pictures and thus launched their film career.

The last two Broadway shows of The Marx Brothers became their first films, The Cocoanuts (Robert Florey, 1929) and Animal Crackers (Victor Heerman, 1930). Their next film was Money Business (Norman Z. McLeod, 1931). Between 1932 and 1933, a total of 26 episodes of the radio show 'Flywheel, Shyster & Flywheel' were made, with Groucho voicing the lawyer Waldorf T. Flywheel and Chico voicing his sidekick Emmanuel Ravelli. The first three episodes were broadcast under the title 'Beagle, Shyster & Beagle'. The title was then changed after a New York lawyer named "Beagle" threatened to sue. Some of the dialogue from the radio broadcasts was later used in the Marx Brothers films. Their most successful film of the early period was Horse Feathers (Norman Z. McLeod, 1932), a satire on the American college system. But Duck Soup (Leo McCarey, 1933), generally considered their masterpiece, had much less success. It marked their break with Paramount. Zeppo, who always played serious roles, stopped making films after this. The Marx Brothers' first five films are generally considered their best, expressing their surrealist and anarchic humour in its purest form. The three remaining brothers moved to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and changed the formula of their subsequent films. Their remaining films were given romantic plots and serious musical interludes, often intended as resting points between the often hilarious comic sketches. In A Night at the Opera (Sam Wood, 1935), a satire on the opera world, the brothers help two young singers in love. The film was very successful and was followed by the equally popular A Day at the Races (Sam Wood, 1937), where they kicked up a fuss at a race track. Several less memorable films followed until 1941. After the war, two more films A Night in Casablanca (Archie Mayo, 1946) and Love Happy (David Miller, 1949) followed to pay off Chico's gambling debts. This was followed by the mediocre film The Story of Mankind (Irwin Allen, 1957), and a television special The Incredible Jewel Robbery (1959). These productions were already interludes, while each brother had already picked up a career of his own. Chico and Harpo continued on stage and Groucho had started a career as a radio and television entertainer. With his television and radio show 'You Bet Your Life', he became one of the most popular show hosts of the 1950s in the USA. The first episodes of the show were still broadcast live, as was customary at the time. But because Groucho's unbridled wordplay caused headaches for those in charge of the show, they deviated from this for later episodes and the programme was broadcast as a recording. He also wrote a number of books. Gummo and Zeppo ran a theatre agency together. A final film project planned for 1960, starring the Marx Brothers once again and directed by Billy Wilder, did not materialise due to Chico's poor health.
