Background information:

The agriculture sector plays a pivotal role in our global economy and food security. However, it is also a major contributor to environmental degradation and human health risks due to the extensive use of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) pesticides, highly hazardous pesticides (HHPs), and agricultural plastics.

The 2022 Pesticide Atlas report found global pesticide use up 80% since 1990., with over 4 million tonnes applied annually. Tragically, this has resulted in approximately 11,000 deaths and the poisoning of 385 million people each year. Moreover, the escalating use of agricultural plastics, totalling 12.5 million tonnes yearly, further exacerbates environmental challenges1.

In response to these pressing issues, the Global Environment Facility (GEF) has initiated the Financing Agrochemical Reduction and Management (FARM) Programme, a USD 341-million co-finance programme aimed at mitigating the adverse effects of pesticides and plastics in agricultural production. The GEF Council has pledged USD 37 million grant to the programme.

Together, we seek to explore diverse perspectives and strategies for leveraging finance and regulatory frameworks to foster sustainable farming practices while reducing the use of harmful pesticides and plastics.
