The Civil Society Programme took place from Thursday 14 May through Friday 15 May. The Programme in 2015 introduced a new approach to the flagship event of the EBRD engagement with civil society.

For the first time, CSOs had the chance to shape the Civil Society Programme through a social media consultation. In addition, CSOs were invited to submit proposals for the organisation of discussion panels dedicated to issues of specific interest to the Caucasus region and stakeholders in the EBRD.

Letter of Application and Testimonials for Oliver J. Lodge for the Chair of Experimental Physics at University College, Liverpool, 1881

Lodge was Assistant-Professor of physics at University College, London when he applied for the post at the newly established University College at Liverpool. His letter of application gives details of his academic career and his plans to establish a laboratory at Liverpool, to inspire students with a love of the subject, and to develop a programme of evening classes, mentioning his own experience of studying in the evenings and stating that he ‘should be glad to help young men in like condition’

The application includes testimonials from colleagues at University College, London, and the British Association for the Advancement of Science, and from his friend and mentor, Professor G. F. Fitzgerald.

During his time at Liverpool, Lodge lectured on the ether and discovered the electrostatic condensation of fog. He also carried out experiments on the electromagnetic field, producing electromagnetic waves guided along wires using discharge from a Leyden jar in 1888 during work on lightening conductors.

He returned to experiments with radio waves in the 1890s and, with the help of Alexander Muirhead, gave the first public demonstration of radio telegraphy, using the method of signaling in Morse code via long and short pulses. He demonstrated his radio-wave receiver apparatus at the British Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in Liverpool in 1896. Lodge also lectured on X-rays in Liverpool the same year

A very successful workshop for primary school teachers was held on Saturday 25 January 2014 at the European Parliament Information Office in Dublin. Teachers attended from across the country and the aim of the workshop was to exchange best practices among participating teachers. Three MEPs, Marian Harkin, Mairead McGuinness and Emer Costello, attended the event and spoke about their work. The idea behind the programme is to encourage students to get to know their European neighbours better through activities in their schools.

Students of Noble High School showcased their talents through annual cultural extravaganza. The programme commenced with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by our honorable chief guest Mrs. Sudha Gupta and other dignitaries. The cultural programme started with a melodious orchestra performance followed by a delightful ‘welcome dance’ by pre-nursery students. The glimpses of our incredible country were presented through a skit and various folk dances. The student enthralled the audience with their wonderful performances and the parents were full of cheers and applause for the students.

310 Major School Building Projects announced by Minister O’Sullivan

Education Minister Jan O’Sullivan today announced a new programme of capital investment in schools. Running from 2016 to 2021 this investment will provide funding for 310 major school projects, resulting in an additional 62,000 permanent school places.

Speaking at the launch which was attended by the Taoiseach, Tanaiste, Minister Varadkar and Minister English, Minister O’Sulllivan said,

“Over the next six years we will invest approximately €2.8bn in providing high-quality school accommodation throughout the country.

“The transparent list of projects that we are announcing today will provide 62,000 additional school places over the lifetime of the investment plan and will also eliminate the need for any school to use pre-fabs as a long-term accommodation solution.

This plan also addresses the requirements of many schools which are in need of upgrading and refurbishment, although they may not be experiencing significant demographic pressure.”

The capital investment plan announced today includes:

310 extension/refurbishment projects in existing schools for the period 2016 – 2021 (156 at primary level and 124 at post-primary and 30 in special schools)*

14 new schools in areas with very strong demographic demand (10 post-primary and 4 primary)

Together these projects will provide 19,000 new primary schools places and 43,000 new post-primary places.

Vocational training and cognitive behavioural therapy form the backbone of many rehabilitation programmes around the world. The SMASH programme will provide 24/7 support on mental well-being. This employment assistance programme (EAP) will also provide financial and legal advice, career coaching and parenting support services to our highly skilled workforce.

IAPI is delighted to be bringing this programme to our members thanks to the patronage of TABS (The Advertising Benevolent Society).

“TABS has been working behind the scenes of the industry for over 60 years helping those who have fallen on hard times but we feel it is time to be more visible and relevant to a younger cohort of the workforce. We’re delighted with the prominence that IAPI is giving this programme and believe it will be of huge benefit to their members as they look to support and nurture the extraordinary talent in the industry.” Allen Kiernan, Financial Director, BBDO Dublin and Board Member, TABS.

Mental health challenges are on the increase and the World Health Organisation predicts that depression will be the leading global burden of disease by 2030. Ireland ranks in the top 10 countries worldwide in relation to numbers of the population affected by anxiety disorders (WHO, 2017) with depression, anxiety and stress being the most common difficulties.

Armed with this information and with the knowledge that our industry is already one of the most stressful to work in, TABS recognise that instead of shying away from this fact, we need to face it head-on and do something about it. The vast majority of those under 30 in the industry are not aware of the support TABS provides and given that they represent 47% of the workforce, this needed to be addressed. TABS now sponsor the SMASH programme for all IAPI members.

The programme is being managed by Spectrum Health, who were chosen by TABS after a comprehensive search for the best partner.

The launch will take place in Venue 35 (formally La Stampa) with doors open from 5.30pm. The launch will kick off with a keynote speech from Niall Breslin at 6pm.

Niall Breslin AKA Bressie is an award-winning musician, former Westmeath Gaelic footballer, former Leinster Rugby under 21 player, a mental health advocate and a best selling author. He is a passionate speaker and campaigner leading a new kind of conversation around mental health.

Following Niall's talk, three advertising professionals will share their own personal stories relating to their experiences of maintaining and developing their own well-being.
