Winter is here and I start skiing, tomorrow. Before that happens, here's some behind-the-scenes biketography action from last week's trip to Southern Utah. I don't share this work a lot but this is a big part of how I pay the bills - bike porn. I love doing outdoor mountain bike product shots where I get to combine landscape, bikes and lighting. This bike is the new Pivot Shuttle LT, a long-travel enduro e-bike. It's a pedal-assist bike, meaning you have to pedal to engage the motor - there's no throttle. The motor just boosts your effort.

Hey everyone I was notified yesterday that I was one of the select artists out of 300 to be accepted into the "Close To Home" art gallery showing at the Anton Art Center in downtown Mt. Clemens. Opening night is tomorrow from 6-8pm come check it out if you get the chance. The show will run through March 21, 2010.

Note - this image is not in the show, just something I was shooting for a commercial client. If you want to see the real one, you'll have to visit the gallery.

It's been a while since I shot on a black background because most of my commercial work requires pure white or lifestyle.

So this has been a treat. This is the first in the series, some are on matt black and some on black glass so I could have the reflections I love too.

So this was the view from the studio yesterday afternoon. I think he was actually eating but it was also raining hence the title. He spent the entire afternoon in the garden despite me watching from the window just feet away with the camera.

He even coped with me hanging out of the upstairs window talking to him and it wasn't till he heard the camera shutter again a couple of times that he got up slowly and wandered off. But only to the back garden, where I was allowed to wander out and talk to him from a distance. Sadly I didn't have the long lens on then. But isn't he lovely?

A red white and blue 'bomb pop' style popsicle with wooden stick against a bright yellow background.

Straight from the garden to the studio in just moments. Picked to use in a shoot but I had to get a shot of just them too as I thought they looked so beautiful.

This was dinner so not a full on commercial shoot. But yummy, just didn't want it to get cold while I got all the pics I needed.

Decmber 2016, on the Quayside in Newcastle upon Tyne, heading towards the quayside. Thick fog on the Tyne with strong sunshine behind.

Beadle Bay was just beautiful today. Glorious sunshine, views for miles, surfers, a microlight, some walkers and some dogs but plenty of space.

Wine glass, white reflector in between light n subject, black cardboard stuck on the reflector, one more black cardboard to place the subject on it, some water in the glass .. that’s about it.

I'm on my way back to Southern Utah for some more mountain bike product photography so I thought I'd share some recent bike porn. This is the new 2020 Pivot Switchblade 29er, taken a couple of weeks ago with the setting sun reflected against the cliffs of Zion National Park. It's an acceptable backdrop.

I'm about to head back down to Southern Utah to do some more mountain bike product photography so I thought it would be nice to share what I do to pay the bills. Action and event photos are part of what I do but product photography like this is also a big part of my work. I love shooting bikes outdoors - finding locations, choosing the right time of day and getting the lighting just right make me very satisfied. I really liked shooting this Knolly Warden mountain bike. These days, most bikes I photograph are carbon fiber. But there's something about a raw aluminum frame with fat, juicy welds. This is a beauty of a bike.

Every once in a while I have to share a commercial photo to remind people what I do for a living. This is a behind-the-scenes photo from a recent product photography session. The bike is a Revel Rail 29 and the photos were for Over the Edge, Hurricane, a destination bike shop in Southern Utah that I do all the marketing for. If you're in a need of a good, experienced product photographer - especially for outdoor gear, I'm your man. I've got a huge range of locations in my portfolio; and I can work in the studio, as well.

This beautiful creature was in our garden earlier just outside the studio and I actually had the camera ready to go - and I'd just cleaned the window!!

I've seen so many lovely images of lavender fields and felt quite envious, but no longer. It's not lavender but the heather here in North Northumberland is just beautiful.

I'm finishing up a studio photography job for Stunt Puppy, a dog accessory company that makes really nice, thoughtful outdoor/adventure gear for your best friend. This photo is from an outdoor job I did for them a few years ago. The product here is the Stunt Runner leash. It's designed so you can fasten it around your waist to keep your hands free. It has an elastic section for comfort and safety. Reacher, our canine model, is a very handsome doggy. I love working with him.

Paying the bills! Every once in a while I need to remind people I'm a product photographer as well as an action sports photographer. Recently, I've been doing some work for the Over the Edge bike shop in Hurricane, Utah. We're doing outdoor bike photos to show off the landscape and trails as well as the bikes. I like the challenge of finding good locations and getting great product photos outside the studio. I am especially happy with the photos of this Ibis Ripmo 29er mountain bike. The orange and blue frame look great against the red rock and blue mountains.

Strobist info: Two Godox AD200s without modifiers to the left and right of the bike at about a 30-degree angle. Both lights were triggered with Godox XPro trigger. No modifiers were used.
