WW!

This is Berry Austin Frozen Yogurt here in Austin and founded by Kathy Steele with the encouragement and support of her family and friends.

While visiting her father in California who was undergoing chemotherapy, Kathy discovered that frozen yogurt with live/active cultures and healthy probiotics was not only something her father could eat during his treatments, but one he thoroughly enjoyed. Kathy developed a healthy addiction to frozen yogurt during her visit and returned to Austin excited about this new culinary find.

Yes, we are currently mere shadows of ourselves as we have become trapped in DIARRHEA HELL!

For two months Tidda has been suffering from increasingly frequent bouts of diarrhea. For the most part, she seems to be feeling okay and enjoys her walks, is hungry and plays. I on the other hand have been reduced to stumbling in a trance from one colon emergency to the next, randomly having to drop everything and take her outside or, worse, having to get up at 2 a.m. to take her out. And then again at 5.

Stool samples are negative for Giardia, negative for worms. She's been on probiotics and prebiotics for 10 days and has had several 24-hour fasts, now mostly getting rice and home-cooked chicken broth. She's losing weight and does seem to be a little less energetic.

The 12 day wait for the vet appointment has been the longest 12 days ever. It's no longer episodic but just continuous diarrhea. I wanted to bring her in as an emergency on Saturday but then she seemed slightly better and the vet "no longer had any same day visits available" that day. To be honest, I might be suffering more than she is. They said I'm doing everything right and she should get better.

Ever since the pandemic, the vet clinic has been chronically understaffed and overburdened and I've heard it's due in large part to the extreme local housing shortage as they can't hire people if there is no affordable place for them to live. Another issue is that I have constant problems buying her regular food as intermittently it's just not available due to the supply chain problems that are affecting pet foods. It's a real stressor for me. I'm going to see what the vet thinks about the possibility of making my own food for her.

Yet, Tidda is her sweet and good self. I'm trying to emulate her in that regard. I tell myself we will get through this and she will get better. Life just never seems to get any easier, though.

Wish us luck for the vet visit on Wednesday!

TIdda gastrointestinal update:

Monday was a terrible day for Tidda with 10+ urgent trips outside, nausea, eating a ton of grass and vomiting it up later. She clearly felt very unwell.

So I withheld all food once more for 24 hours. Then, I tried a few tablespoons of plain canned pumpkin with a little rice and later rice and chicken. And she soon got better! I had also stopped the probiotics. In retrospect, it really seemed to me like it was the probiotics that had actually triggered the rapid escalation of things.

Since yesterday, she's been getting better pretty quickly, loving the boiled chicken, and today we had the long awaited vet visit. Both the vet tech and the vet were really wonderful and took a lot of time and it was a great informative visit! The vet was very sensitive with Tidda, who was a bit trembly at first. After a while, she was lying down and looking bored!

The vet thought it sounded most like a digestive tolerance issue since it did appear to be "diet responsive," so the first step should be the least invasive, which is just seeing if a different food will resolve the issue. So she is now on a special GI food (not cheap!) and seems to like it actually, together with her chicken and rice.

I raised the topic of homemade food and to my surprise the vet was open to it and even printed out some information and maybe I'll experiment a little in that direction later, once Tidda is solid and stable again.

As you see in this picture taken a few weeks ago, she had gotten a bit chubby (but in a cute way!). When she was found as a stray last summer, she weighed 45 pounds and looked emaciated. Today, after definitely losing weight through her illness, she weighed 54 pounds. I was shocked! She has been making up for lost time and I was feeding her a little too much!

There will probably be some more hiccups on the road to finding the right diet for her, but for the moment she is on the mend and I feel very positive and hopeful that I can manage it!

Thanks so much everyone for your support and advice!!! :)

At my age a sweet treat can't just be sugar, corn syrop and some red dye 40. There needs to be antioxidants and probiotics. Hence my photo of Probiotic Trail Mix. I know most of this picture is of nuts and dried fruit and if it gets kicked out of the group pool, well, so shall it be. The white things are candy coated dried cranberrys. It's called "yogurt flavored confectionary coating with probiotic". The ingredients are listed and it's mostly sugar and powered this and that until it gets to "Bacillus Coagulans GBI-30 6086". OK. Yet, if you google both "red dye 40" and "Bacillus Coagulans GBI-30 6086" and follow the links to healthline.com the Bacillus stuff doesn't seem so bad. At any rate Happy Macro Mondays. As always, thanks to any and all that stop to look, like and maybe leave a comment.

Or cornflower, a favorite wildflower. The root makes a popular coffee substitute and additive. As in Cafe du Monde! They say it’s a strong probiotic!

Love the blue!

Week 34 in 52 Weeks for Dogs. Tasku is trying for a little disguise this week, hiding herself under this mask that I bought for a bargain price at one of the art exhibitions we (me, Mary and John) visited today.

An update on Tasku's health problems - we have been back to the vet twice this week, as her symptoms returned suddenly a few days after finishing the second course of antibiotics. She was prescribed some probiotics and I had to reduce the amount of profibre she was having. Thank goodness her poo has returned to normal (again!) and the vet we saw this morning is happy with me monitoring Tasku for the next couple of weeks before having another examination. She may still need a needle aspiration but at present I am again keeping my fingers crossed that it isn't anything serious.

Joey's "gotcha" anniversary was actually last January the 29th, but I've been preoccupied with other things ever since the recent lockdown in Malaysia for the past two months.

Here he is, testing out the new scratching board which I purchased online which arrived today.

I have taken quite a few photos of Joey but haven't gotten to post processing them.

Joey's health has never been better and I haven't been giving him Sub-q fluids for over a month. He has gained weight and his appetite has improved.

He dreads being force fed his daily meds and supplements every morning by our domestic maid, but his medication - especially enalapril (for blood pressure), CoQ-10 (natural anti inflammation), Vitamin B Complex (for appetite), red krill oil (Omega-3 supplement) and probiotics (to absorb toxins from his kidneys) has saved his life.

I still have his Sub-q fluids on standby and if he shows signs of dehydration I will resume his subcutaneous fluid administration.

My last class of the semester is tomorrow. I should be happy but I'm not. The weather is cold and windy and it's going to rain later. Remind me what season it is again?

Anyway, I just heard that pro-biotics are good bacteria that help with depression, anxiety, fatigue and weight loss. Not that I need to loose weight but that depression part sounds good. Going to buy some yogurt today because it seems thats what can help me get over this weather.

This is my HBW shot since I'll be a little MIA but I'll drop by once in a while ... even when I shouldn't *wink*

Even when he seems to be busy doing his own thing, Flynn usually keeps an ear (or both ears!) out to listen to what I'm up to. You can see his pointy ears were tipped back towards me here... He'd just noticed I'd stopped walking. Good boy usually turns around & returns to me pretty quickly once he registers my footsteps have stopped. This time, Flynn was keen to keep an eye on what was causing a disturbance up ahead, so he stopped & listened for my call but still kept his eye on the path. When I took a look at what had his attention, I spotted the farmer out in his tractor, further along up the field. Bit of a shame - we usually sit down around here but best not if there's farm equipment trundling up & down!!

This shot wasn't really what I had planned for this week (it's in the same place & quite similar to a pic a couple of weeks back). However, I was pleased to be able to snap anything. Poor old Flynn's had a funny tummy all week - diarrhoea. It's not been that bad really but with his kidney issues, I worry a lot more. He's now had 3 days of a probiotic & clay mix to hopefully improve things but a vet visit is on the cards if Flynn's not completely well in a day or two. Anyway, due to the GI issues, Flynn's had a very very quiet week at home but on Saturday, he barked & barked & demanded to be allowed out, so we sloowly meandered up the road, peeped into the fields for a minute & slooowly meandered home. I am glad Flynn's feeling relatively energetic & well enough to want outings, fingers crossed he is soon back to normal!

Its a sorry sight when your pets cant be bothered to do anything, apart from feel sorry for themselves.

Mollie and Rupert have both spent the week back and forth to the vet having picked up a virus ...... Sickness, high temperature and lethargy have struck them both! Clay paste, anti sickness injections, probiotics and not forgetting masses of TLC are working there magic to make them better.

I'm glad to say, they seem to be on the right side of it!!!!!!! Thank goodness :-))

My dog's recent illness and dietary change has made daily feeding more complicated than it used to be. He is now on a home cooked diet, so his meals are mixed each day - a combination of chicken, squash, and rice, with a probiotic and vitamin supplement added. Seeing how he's thriving on this new regimen makes it all worth the work though!

Take Aim: Hands at work

One of my very recent snaps of Joey, since his second hospitalization in early November due to CKD. He has regained his vigor and weight thanks to the ongoing acupuncture treatments, frequent subcutaneous fluid therapy and daily feeding of probiotics and Brand's Essence of Chicken. Admittedly, Joey's the first cat in our household to be fed with this traditional tonic. It sure has boosted his appetite and works better than the drug mirtazapine which our conventional vet prescribed him back in November. Poor Joey suffered from mild head tremors after applying mirtazapine to his ears.

We used to purchase the expensive probiotic called Azodyl, which our vet sells for US$1 a capsule. One day I found out that there are cheaper alternatives that do the same job but needs no refrigeration or have to be swallowed whole! She must be wondering why I haven't been to her clinic for a refill for the past two months. 😁

I apologize for not being able to upload new photos on Flickr as I don't have the luxury of free time to sit in front of my laptop to process my images.

It's been a long, sad week - the house still feels so strange without dear old Barney. I've been trying to spend time outside & the weather is absolutely beautiful... but we're having to take things steady. I'm tired & Flynn STILL isn't 100% himself, nearly 2 months after he initially became really poorly with diarrhoea. He still needs a very plain diet as normal kibble seems to cause problems. Even on plain food, he's occasionally still having a bit of diarrhoea &/or blood in his poop. Flynn's also generally lethargic & subdued & it's hard to know how much is due to continued GI issues & how much is other stuff. Obviously, Flynn's missing his "big brother" Barney, so I'm sure that's some of it. He's also not been able to have his regular anti-inflammatory medication, due to the intermittent GI issues & as a result, is now looking pretty stiff on both his front & back end...

I think we're going to have to go to the vet, (yet again!), next week. Flynn did have bloods taken 2 weeks ago, which came back fine, so that is good - although we may recheck them... A stool sample showed he has giardia though & we're waiting to see if there's any other infection going on! In the meantime, he's started a 2nd round of treatment for giardia. Frustratingly, I'm hideously allergic to the 1 type of antibiotic that treats the parasite, so we're limited to Panacur (a de-wormer) but hopefully it'll work this time! I think I need to ask about Flynn's diet going forwards, as I don't want him to end up with chronic digestive issues & even with probiotics, his gut clearly isn't "happy" right now! Also want to know about if/when he can go back on proper pain meds, because I do think if Flynn wasn't achy, he'd be a lot happier. Poor pup.

Anyway, this pic was taken on a slow meander down to the local buttercup fields, which you can see in the background here. I enjoyed looking at all the late spring flowers & Flynn enjoyed a nice, gentle "sniffy walk" along the hedgerows, which were bustling with life - small birds, voles, bunnies, squirrels & we even spied a little slow-worm (a type of legless lizard), out sunning itself in a patch of sunshine.

PS - thank you so much to everyone who left such kind & comforting words about Barney's passing.

My first try making this tea, rich in probiotics and combats stress tis said, Doing some research with trepidation

It's been a rough few weeks! A week before Easter, Barney's "little brother" Flynn caught some kind of nasty stomach bug (or possibly giardia)... Flynn was really poorly with it, then just as he started improving, Barney came down with the same illness & he was really ill. Poor Barn was refusing even water on one day & I worried he'd need to be put on a drip. Thankfully an anti-sickness injection helped & we were able to get him to take some fluids & eat a little that evening. Obviously, I hate seeing either dog sick but it is so worrying given Barney's age & frailty.

Unfortunately, the dogs have been reinfecting each other, or else this is just a very stubborn infection, as they've been taking it in turns to be poorly, every few days since their first bouts of illness! It's been less severe each time & tends to only last a day or 2 but it's not much fun for anyone! Every time I think "Oh, phew, we're finally in the clear", one of the dogs will start pooping again! They've had multiple doses of probiotics, got treated for giardia & been on special food. Flynn likes the gastrointestinal kibble/ wet food... but Barney isn't a fan & tends to just pick at it. I want to avoid the old boy missing too many meals, so I've been cooking up rice & chicken, or sometimes white fish. Haha, I'm a vegetarian, & although the dogs are always fed "species appropriate" meat-based diets, we don't normally have fresh meat/fish in the house - you can imagine how excited Barney & Flynn are by this sudden addition to supper!

Anyway, due to feeling tired & unwell (plus the weather has been miserable & kept us inside), Barney's not done much exciting this month - we've mostly just been resting. However, we had some nice warm sunshine today & I took Barney outside in the garden for a while. He lay on a few blankets & perused his new book "Where's the Puppy?"... which is like "Where's Wally" (or "Where's Waldo" in the US/Canada) - but with puppies! Here, he was trying to find Puppy & friends hidden in a pet shop :)

This is not an advert. I am sharing this picture from my mobile phone to show my latest go to to help a little this clears my throat wonderfully well. I am not trying to promote it into your life, rather showing you what I enjoying in mine and that I like this image too. The label to me evokes cures and tonics as of old. I have no idea of any benefits. The vinegar is a strong shot for my throat and here I have the label ready for my curious memory.

It just looked like you know what

But then apparently I might be a witch so might explain a few things. [Like talking to the animals and plants I live with? Helping scobies transmute sugary tea into an amazing probiotic drink that has many uses. e.g left for longer to make vinegar that is great in salad dressings and as a hair rinse. At 20 cents a litre a LOT cheaper than the crazily packaged alternatives! I digress].

Here's a photo I took of the sky last night. We had a frost yesterday and I'd heard my existing camera would allow me to capture some pretty sky action. Took this at F2.8, ISO3200 and shutter 30 seconds.

I have yet to indulge in detailed post processing to really bring out what is there. Gonna do that once I've captured crisper images. So exciting to have this night world open up. A gadget to capture star trails is also rather enticing!

Happy Thursday xx

How to Make It

Step 1

Place the cream of coconut, pineapple juice, light rum, and ice in a blender. Pulse until smooth and combined, then pour into a glass.

Step 2

Top with 1/2 ounce dark rum and garnish with a piece of fresh pineapple.

Step 3

Add spice of your choice...

Our homemade peanut brittle :D

Well; according to the "Holland and Barrett" web site, Gut Power is 50+ billion live friendly bacteria, along with calcium which contributes to the normal function of the digestive enzymes in our bodies.

Well its not clear if each capsule contains 50 billion bacteria or if the pack of 30 capsules contains 50 billion.

In comparison a 4oz pot of live yoghurt will contain at least 12.5 Billion live bacteria (and pretty much the same sorts as "Gut Powder"), and a load of calcium and other minerals and vitamins.(Most yoghurt sold in the UK is ‘live’).

the National Yoghurt Association in the United States, requires 100 million bacteria per gram in products that carry the Live and Active Cultures seal.

500g Asda natural yoghurt £0.90.

Holland and Barrett "Gut Power £22.99

Its up to you, but I know what I am buying.

Although the probiotic companies claimed many health benefits for many years, now they have changed their advertising in Europe as the European Food Safety Authority ruled that not all these pieces of evidence are yet there.

James Kinross at Imperial College London who is studying this complex subject. He agrees that it is now known that whilst you are taking probiotic products, the live bacteria from them seem to survive the stomach and make it to the rest of the gut. However, it seems that when you stop taking them, they get flushed out of the system. He does recommend them for some of his patients who have conditions such as infective diarrhoea or irritable bowel syndrome, but he says that the evidence for them generally boosting the health of people without such conditions is lacking.

Why must it be probiotic?

yes, it's a bowl of steaming milk. it doesn't get much more exciting around here these days.

I'm making my own probiotics to put in my smoothies. Well, I'm trying. It's a lot like a big science experiment. With me as the test subject.

Joey's adoption day was actually last January 29th and he's been with me for the past eleven years.

Although he still suffers from chronic kidney disease since 2019, we have managed to improve his quality of life.

Every day without fail we make sure that he takes his blood pressure prescription medicine, probiotics, Vitamin B, CoQ-10 and Antarctic red krill oil.

The effort was worth it as he had gained some weight and is more energetic than he was three years ago.
