Patching the cables during a recording session at Blue Light Studio in Vancouver.

For many years, I owned and used Allen & Heath analogue mixing desks. When the digital revolution came, I bought a Behringer X32 as it was the only fully featured board that I could afford, and I don't regret that choice at all.

This digital equivalent of my old GL4 is very nice though.

Richard Digance can be seen performing in the background.

After days of work, holiday and and lack of internet, I am back on track with my POTY.

This is what I call love.

Buttons to press, switches to flick and levers to pull; hope it turns out alright.

An array of knobs, switches & levers await to be turned at pressed prior to a recording session at Blue Light Studio in Vancity.

Time to test stuff!

2 of the 3 objects in the picture worked perfectly......

Putting together an EQ requires some fine fingerwork...which I don’t have!

The cover story called, "Unusual Techniques in Sound Recording", caught my attention.

1950 was a pivotal time with transition from disk to magnetic tape recording, it also marked the beginning of High Fidelity for the consumer.

FYI; The lady in plaid is most likely a model. Vintage magazines, especially magazines aimed at men, always and incongruously have woman on the cover as set decoration. Today women belong in technical and industrial work because they are welcomed there.

a picture sent to me from the client with the vintage U47 mic in its box.

Studio 2,000 sq' live room in Doylestown PA . 1hr North of Philadelphia. 2hrs west of NYC.

What you are looking at is a reanimated Post War (WWII) late 1940's Electro-Voice V-3 Velocity "Ribbon" Microphone.

There were a few aspects of the mic including some components that needed to be reckoned with.

Almost identical to an original V-3 right out of the box, however she no longer sports her silvery grey enamel finish which was carefully and amorously stripped down to her exquisitely bare steel and aluminum frame.

In order for this V-3 to be authentic, The output transformer needed to be repaired ($$$ rewound) to properly work in conjunction with the V-3's unique 50, 250, 500, 25,000 ohms output impedance selector.

The selector switch Itself was just fine and needed a cleaning.

New silver teflon wiring.

A new Neodymium super magnet for the electromagnetic induction motor upped the ante for increased performance.

New super foam shock absorbers that have replaced the original rubber bumpers.

A painstakingly (precision) hand cut & corrugated silver foil ribbon that is the "icing on the cake".

As a result of enduring relentless benchwork, This V-3 has indeed become realized as a fine microphone.

Electric Hotel Studio rack:

2 x RND portico 511 mic preamps

1 x Elysia Xfilter 500 (10 years anniversary vinyl LTD edition)

1 x Elysia Xpressor 500 (coffee LTD edition)

lindell audio 506 mk1 power supply.

I added some m3 hex screws to improve the look today, minor thing but it makes it look much better.

Mystery Mics

When I first saw this negative, I thought it was Jim Webb's famous Mic collection, once on display in LA. The unlabeled negative was processed in Richardson, TX. This vintage mic collection was on display in a Dallas, Texas shop

It's true, I've forgotten so much, when I rumage through piles of old pictures, I recover events I long lost. I spent a few weeks in Texas to attend training at Alcatel during my gig with MCI. In my off time I explored the area, including Deep Ellum, Dallas, Texas.

Here's the BIOS boot screen from an IBM PCAT that has been upgraded to an ASL Transformer backplane and an 80386/33 CPU board. This is a passive ISA backplane with only the ISA slots and keyboard connector on it. All other I/O is on the CPU board that plugs into one of the slots, including BIOS, CPU, serial, parallel, IDE, floppy, and real time clock. These upgrades were produced in the early 1990's to extend the life of the early PC's.

This system has 8MB of RAM, a Trident TVGA board, a ProAudio Spectrum 16 sound card, a tray loading CD-ROM and a 33.6 modem.

The Zenith Z-248 had a similar backplane/CPU design and upgrade CPU cards were made for it as well.
