One of the many booklets and leaflets printed at the Printing Technical School at the National Children's Home Harpenden Herts.

A few lucky older boys were chosen to take up printing when they reached school leaving age at 14 or 15, if they could stick the course, they were rewarded with very good opportunities at the end of their training.

Packaging from a black ink cartridge, on the printer. Even my printer "knows" about this month's colour - I tried to print something & had to go out to buy this as the old one had dried out.

Michael wanted to get me a 3D printer since I started taking an interest in it, and I chose this one. It's supposedly good for the price range. Didn't want to spend a fortune on the first printer, just in case. There were lots of suggestions by his friends that we get one from the $500-$3000 range, but that's just too risky for me. They all had issues and limitations I could not live with for that price.

I'm already eyeing a second printer which is so popular that lead time is 8 weeks. That can be an idea for later :D

This thing stops printing when the top tray is empty, never mind that the lower, larger tray is filled with plenty of the exact same paper. I hate this thing. And don't you dare try to make it pull from both, because then it wont do anything at all. Office Space.

''well where's my photo then?''

Two unbelievably-squeaky ancient printers down, two unbelievable-squeaky ancient printers to go. Unfortunately, they have yet to replace Printer Five, which is the most-used of all of them.

P.F.W. & C.R.W. Depot

Wheeler, Ind.

Date: 1911

Source Type: Postcard

Publisher, Printer, Photographer: Sigler and Jones

Postmark: December 4, 1911, Pittsburgh & Ft. Wayne Railroad (Railroad Post Office, RPO)

Collection: Steven R. Shook

Remark: This image shows the depot for the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railway in Wheeler, Indiana. The depot ceased operation on August 15, 1931, due to lack of freight and passenger traffic. The Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railway was a major segment of the Pennsylvania Railroad system. On July 26, 1856, the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Rail Road was formed as a consolidation of the Fort Wayne and Chicago, Ohio and Indiana, and Ohio and Pennsylvania Railroads. Railroad construction passed through Wheeler in 1858. Railroad officials were going to change the route from Valparaiso and Wheeler to LaPorte, but were persuaded by a grouped of Valparaiso citizens, and in particular T. A. E. Campbell who platted the village of Wheeler, to keep the original route plans through Valparaiso and Wheeler in place. On July 1, 1859, the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Rail Road defaulted on its debt and was sold at foreclosure on October 24, 1861. The line was then reorganized as the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railway on February 26, 1862. On July 1, 1869, the Pennsylvania Railroad leased the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railway and directly operated on the line until April 1, 1871, when the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railway was transferred to the newly-formed Pennsylvania Company. On February 1, 1968, the Pennsylvania Railroad was merged into Penn Central; the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railway running through Wheeler, however, remained separate and filed for bankruptcy on July 14, 1973, after the Penn Central filed for bankruptcy in 1970. On April 1, 1976, the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railway running through Wheeler became part of Conrail. On June 2, 1994, Norfolk Southern Railway purchased 18 miles of track from Gary to Valparaiso, which included the track through Wheeler, for $1.4 million; this 18 miles of track had been out of service since 1991. When Conrail was broken up on August 22, 1998, track running through Wheeler came under the ownership of CSX Transportation. Remark: This image was published in The Times newspaper on July 1, 2012.

The following news item appears in the January 29, 1931, issue of The Chesterton Tribune:

PETITION TO KEEP WHEELER STATION ON PENNSYLVANIA

Business men and farmers of Wheeler to the number of over seventy have signed a petition protesting against the proposed abandonment of the station at Wheeler of the Pennsylvania and Nickel Plate railroads. The petition was filed with the Indiana public service commission on Monday, and state that the station is necessary for marketing and business purposes.

Wooden mallet. Mallet would be used to ensure that furniture is fixed in case and that print was level to guarantee an even printing.

Accession Number: SH.2009.394.3

When a page of type was set, the printer would then hammer the type level by hitting a wooden block "planer" with a mallet across the top of the type. This would ensure that all type was type height and ensure an even print.
