Because it sounds so much better than pond scum. Shooting the wetlands around the bay, I often find these shots of different types and colors of algae. Alviso, California.

Shot just after the sun went down and before the valley turned dark. The steam was churning off of El Capitan all day long and was still going as fog started rising from the valley floor. The air seemed thick and full of movement. The day was over.

Our hero is a primordial being, born from Chaos.

A long exposure looking out on the Irish Sea. There was very little colour in the scene to start with. I took this on my first day out after self-isolating with Covid.

Because it sounds so much better than "pond scum". From a series of photos of what I call Primordial Soup, all of them shot around the San Francisco Bay Area in tide pools, ponds, wetlands, and maybe even one or two from fountains.

These bacteria mats were pretty amazing to me. Primordial looking. This was taken at the Midway Geyser Basin with my camera resting on the boardwalk. These are bacterial mats that extend everywhere, surviving on the heat of the springs. So cool to see. I remain amazed at Yellowstone!

Because it sounds so much better than "pond scum". I love wandering the local wetlands getting shots of the stuff growing on and in the water. From my Primordial Soup collection.

We had yet another nice inversion a few days ago. I set my alarm for before work and drove around trying to find some suitable compositions. I ended up in a small forest which really nice. Still summer lush greens in late summer.⠀

Early Sunday morning at Milford Sound.

I used a whole range of new stuff I've learned over the last few weeks including exposing for the tonal range of my image sensor with an amazing Sekonic L-758D meter, mirror lockup etc., and some Lightroom CC tricks.

Hope you like it.

Brackish water reflects the trees growing in this swamp land outside of Savannah, GA.

This optical manipulation was captured by placing a mirror on its edge into the tide under the setting sunlight, parallel with the horizon; I tilted the mirror towards the surf to negate the view of the ocean and leaned over the top for the photograph, which was taken shortly before the water touched the glass.

With this angle of the reflection, there is an illusion of a sky when in fact, it is merely the oncoming surf and the abysmal landscape just a crack in the sands of Zuma Beach, CA.

Something about the color & tones in this capture give off a somewhat primordial feel to me. The sun was just starting to go down at this point so the tones are more blue & gray. :) -H3

Is the first word that came to mind when I looked at this shot...it was taken towards the base of Niagara Falls on the American side....the green, the mist, makes me think of somewhere very isolated and remote....but there it was right in the middle of a very developed area...:-)

Will there be a predator?
