Do you know these half-dried meadows with golden shimmer at sunset? It was near the river in the village of my mom in Bulgaria.

Every year I bike over to the Arizona Cactus garden on the Stanford University campus to see the explosion of blossoms in late April and early May.

Life is thickly sown with thorns, and I know no other remedy than to pass quickly through them. The longer we dwell on our misfortunes, the greater is their power to harm us.

Opuntia ficus-indica, the Indian fig opuntia, fig opuntia or prickly pear, is a species of cactus that has long been a domesticated crop plant grown in agricultural economies throughout arid and semiarid parts of the world. O. ficus-indica is the most widespread and most commercially important cactus.

Prickly pear is a general term used to describe the Opuntia species, members of the Cactaceae family. Native to the Americas, prickly pear is a spiny, drought-resistant succulent that rapidly invades pastures and natural areas and overwhelms other vegetation.

You must manage the impacts of Opuntia species on your land.

You must not give away, sell or release Opuntia species into the environment. Penalties may apply.
