Cathedral Notre-Dame-du-Puy

Le Puy-en-Velay, Département Haute-Loire, Région Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

The Cathedral is the origin of the Chemin du Puy, one of the principal origin points of the pilgrimage route of Santiago de Compostela in France.

"Le Puy-en-Velay's most striking attraction is the Cathédrale Notre-Dame du Puy, dating chiefly from the first half of the 12th century. The façade, striped in courses of white sandstone and black volcanic breccia, is reached by a flight of sixty steps, and consists of three orders, the lowest composed of three high arcades opening into the porch, which extends beneath the first bays of the nave. Above it are three central windows that light the nave, and above them are three gables on the gable-end of the nave, flanked by two openwork screening gables. The south transept doorway is sheltered by a Romanesque porch. Behind the choir rises a separate Romanesque bell-tower in seven storeys.

The bays of the nave are roofed by octagonal cupolas, the cupola at the crossing forming a lantern; the choir and transepts are barrel vaulted. The striking parti-colored cloister is connected to remains of 13th-century fortifications that separated the cathedral precincts from the rest of the city. Near the cathedral, the 11th-century baptistery of St John is built on Roman foundations.

[...]

Each morning, pilgrims gather to be blessed before starting their journey to Santiago de Compostela. The cathedral has been a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1998, as part of the "Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France. [...]"

This is a "Muselet" - a sort of wire cage which prevents the cork in a champagne bottle from emerging too quickly due to the pressure of the contents. It prevents a cork projectile from injuring guests - and also an unfortunate loss of unrestrained bubbly! Always stay safe with Champagne!

A different view of the old Toll bridge over the River Adur .

This shot is taken from the airport side of the river where there has been a lot of flood prevention work done.

The rocks here are new, a pumping station pumps excess water from many of the brooks and streams that surround the airport and new houses to the West of the airport into the river.

The old Toll bridge Constructed around 1781 now carries only foot traffic and leads to Old Shoreham and a fave pub of mine, The Red Lion Inn and the church of St Nicolas where both our children were christened .

In the night of March 27th, an announcement was made by the Shanghai government to close Pudong and Puxi in succession.

At midnight that night, Pudong went into lockdown first. On the following day, the residents in Puxi rushed to buy vegetables, meat and fish, and food prices soared.

However, this marketplace was ordered to suspend its business to be disinfected and sterilised. Large quantities of vegetables had to be piled up on the streets and could not be brought into the marketplaces. It was almost like a war was coming. Residents who came to buy vegetables had to seek other places or wait until this marketplace reopened.

The Federation always prefers the virtues of peace and diplomacy when addressing a conflict, but there are times when you have to protect your interstellar assets. The Piratical Prevention Platoon (PPP) was formed to help combat the growing interference from the Blacktron Corperation's goons. The moisture pumps on Castor 7 have been a frequent target. But this time the space scum were caught off guard!

TFVAHAGD!

An entrepreneur has come up with these boxes to prevent porch pirates... This one block in Bed Stuy had four of them (three in this picture). Not nearly as ubiquitous as the "Red Claw" steering wheel locks of the 1990s, but definitely a presence. And in an age where people make more use of online shopping and maybe even getting medicine through the post, it makes sense.

The Mounted Patrol Unit (MPU) was established in January of 2010 as an operational police unit. The officers receive a Basic Equitation riding course from the Toronto Police Service where they are educated on horsemanship, riding skills and roadwork.

The mandate of the MPU is to offer high visibility policing, crowd management and active crime prevention in the City of Hamilton. The MPU also works closely with the Police Services’ Action Team to respond to areas identified by hotspot analysis that require focused proactive patrol.

The priorities of the MPU are to heighten the Service’s ability to accomplish:

crime prevention

managing entertainment districts

conducting search and rescue

providing park and trail safety

The MPU consists of 5 horses, 4 full time officers and 4 spare officers in order to ensure year round coverage. The Unit deploys 8 shifts per week, covering; day, afternoon and night shifts.

The horses are all Percheron and Percheron-cross geldings which stand between 17'3 and 18'1 hands high (about 6 feet tall at their withers).

The horses names are all historically significant to the City of Hamilton:

Lincoln - In memory of The Honourable Lincoln Alexander, former Lieutenant Governor of Ontario

Griffin - After the Griffin House in Dundas, part of the Underground Railroad

RHLI - Royal Hamilton Light infantry, pronounced Riley. We support our troops!

MacNab - Sir Allan MacNab fought in the War of 1812 as a 14 year old boy, lived at Dundurn Castle and was former Premier of the Province of Canada

Argyll - Named after The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada (Princess Louise’s), Argyll honours the close connection between the Hamilton Police Service and the local regiment.

After striking out with B727 on the OC this morning, I was on my way home when I got word of the MBTA Wash Train waiting in Walpole for Keolis 714. Since I was nearby, I decided to jump off 495 and run up to Norfolk. Here we see the Wash Train on the former New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad's Midland Route at Norfolk, MA with some neat power.
