I think the word "Alone" has been touched on over and over in this series of photos, however it needs it's own space because it may be the hardest of all the pills to swallow. It's one thing to go through a situation where you've lost everything, but to go through it by yourself is by far the worst feeling in the world. Often times what separates those who make it back on their feet, to those who never recover, is one simple thing. Support.

We're all different people, and everyone who falls has their own reasons for falling. One thing we all have in common though is that any single one of our individual falls can be broken up by another person choosing to get involved. What hurts more than anything in the world is falling, and seeing everyone you ever considered a friend just watching. No one offering to help, no one trying to prevent or even slow your decent, just watching, pitying, and coldly turning the other cheek. There's no feeling lonelier in the world than knowing in your time of need, when it's finally YOU who needs help, that everyone, even the ones you helped at points when you stood tall and they needed a hand, will just let you fall.

If you know someone who is struggling, no matter what that struggle is, let them know you see them. If you care about them, let them know. You might be the reason they recover, you might be all they needed, but you'll never know unless you try.

Remembering a lovely and adventurous day spent wandering the streets of Hội An, Vietnam.

Located in Hoi An Ancient Town - A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Bridge is one of the most attractive cultural destinations in Vietnam. Being built in the 16th century, this monument has witnessed numberless changes in the town.

The Bridge, known as Cau Pagoda (Chùa Cầu), was built in the 16th century with Japanese businessmen’s assistance. The bridge has been associated with a monster’s legend called Namazu, a Japanese mythological monster whose movements cause earthquakes and floods. Its head is located in India, while its body is in Vietnam and its tail in Japan.

The bridge was built with the belief of a magical sword to pin down Namazu’s back. Therefore, the monster could not wriggle, preventing natural disasters in Vietnam, Japan, and India. Hence, the lives of people in these three countries would happen in peace and prosperity.

The Bridge has gone through seven renovations over 400 years, particularly in 1763, 1815, 1875, 1917, 1962, 1986, and 1996. Some small adjustments have been made on the roof, floor, and pillars.

Circumstances prevented me from going on the River Park Walk this morning but that did mean I got to see the Stream Train that was on the Werribee line before heading to North Geelong and on to Ballarat. The two locos were under power as they came up the grade from Hoppers Crossing Station. Loco Y 112 was trailing at the rear of the train.

As per Wikipedia: "To prevent scurvy during the 19th century, British sailors were issued a daily allowance of citrus, such as lemon, and later switched to lime. The use of citrus was initially a closely guarded military secret, as scurvy was a common scourge of various national navies, and the ability to remain at sea for lengthy periods without contracting the disorder was a huge benefit for the military. British sailors thus acquired the nickname "Limey" because of their use of limes."

I believe these are meadow anemone, an ephemeral or commonly a forest flower short lived before the tree canopy prevents the light from hitting them so they will no longer grow.

They look like they are reaching the end of their bloom but still hold their beauty.

Morinda latibractea is a tall shrub or small tree 3-5 m tall. Leaves are broadly elliptic to oval shaped 8-15 x 3-5, with pointed tips.

Morinda latibracteata is endemic to the rock islands of Belau (Palau). There are between 50 to 80 species of Morinda, mostly in the old-world tropics. All Morinda flowers are heterostylous, meaning flowers have variable style length to prevent self-fertilization.

It's great to be totally absorbed in just enjoying a natural event. High water and surging waves over sharp rocks meant an hour sped by. Every shot is different , and the timing was so important, to prevent everything disappearing in a sea of foam. My mind created castles, valleys, waterfalls and cities. City of delusion is a fitting track by Muse

Some people can subconsciously prevent you from becoming your best self.

Everything you do in this life- where you go, what you say, what you do and who you do it with is the result of your thoughts.

A big reason people fight is because people identify with their thoughts. When we were growing up, most of us believed that thoughts come from the inside. We thought that they were innately a part of us and that we *are* our thoughts. We started building our whole identities around our own little internal monologues.

And the bigger the idea, the more of your identity it represents. This is why politics and religion are such hotly debated topics, because they're such big ideas. If I say your political idea is a bad idea, and you base your identity on that idea, then effectively what you're hearing is that I'm calling you a bad person. You think that I'm attacking you, not the idea.

Something that might be even more common is that people just straight up attack the individual as a proxy for attacking that person's idea.

Somewhere along the way, a few people started realizing they had it all wrong.

In practice, a much better way to think about it is that the universe has an infinite number of streams of thoughts, so to speak, that our brains can kind of tap into like different radio stations. With this analogy, we no longer have to view ourselves as a series of thoughts but rather as an empty vessel by which thoughts pass through. Now we're like the DJ of a radio station, not the individual song. The self is merely an observer. It was this distinction that sparked one of the most famous philosophical debates of all time, which is, I think therefore I am versus I *do* therefore I am.

Spolier alert, you should pick the latter.

In this analogy, the self is determined by our ability to pick and choose different ideas from different streams of thoughts and combine them to form new ideas. Sort of like picking ingredients to make a sandwich.

This is different from the first paradigm, in which we would just take everything from the same stream and hope that the sandwich turns out good anyways.

Therapists know that this works, that's why when people come in complaining about depression, they're told to use the term "negative intrusive thoughts".

The idea is actually pretty simple. If you don't take ownership of the idea and instead you assign a label to it, then you can categorize it as something that life just happened to send your way but something that you're also allowed to throw away. You don't have to hold on to it because it's not actually a part of you. It's just a shitty song on the radio station.

So how does this all relate to other people holding you back?

To be continued..

The sandhill cranes at Bosque del Apache generally fly in to their night haven ponds just at sunset (from my past experience, which admittedly is limited). This year they mostly waited until after sunset, preventing getting their aerial portraits with beautiful warm light. On this evening a Loggerhead Shrike stopped by to pose on a sign, providing a nice consolation prize. Although they are mostly insectivorous, the bit of a hook in the bill also is indicative of their ability to eat small mammals.

The "knobby-ness" of these tree branches brings up the subject of "pollarded" trees. Severe cutting/trimming of the branches to prevent normal expansion of size, year to year. The resultant tree shapes have been popular in Europe in formal landscaping since at least the 17th century. The practice has a deep history, with more practical origins.

I used to hate the look, but after reading up on the history, I am more tolerant and even interested. Typically, such trees are trimmed back severely--to the branch knobs--every year or two.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pollarding

One of the reasons to employ pollarding, according to Wikipedia, is: "to maintain trees at a determined height". That would seem to be the reason it is used here.

► █░▓ Yesterday I witnessed and filmed one of the most beautiful weddings of my life... At a moment I thought... well I can’t attend my son’s wedding, but am instead blessed with this one... —big HUGS TO 👑AIDAN AND ANASTASIA👑, our illuminated heroes now united in Christ’s Glory, with my best wishes for their harmonious marriage and a solid place booked in eternity. I may be overemotional, but only the camera's viewfinder prevented a few tears from coming out of my eyes at the sight of this couple in the ceremony. Being intrinsically Christian, it had all the virtues of our Lord — His humility, the modesty, the standing elevation. The greatest pomp & circumstance of which were — but who ever needs more! — the firm, solemn, stately nobility of the 21 year old bridegroom, and the radiating, uplifted beauty of the 19 year old bride. To them I congratulate and devote this upload, with Vera’s short story (originally in Russian) that can serve as a reminder for the moments of temptation which are not to our will’s short-lived laps. Those moments are bound to come...

Everything that happens, it all leads to... something.

The commuter train is delayed for about 20 minutes, and everyone on the platform is tired and grumpy, after work, wanting to go home, so we're waiting. No one announces when the train will arrive, like "information coming up." Finally, the train arrives, everyone sullenly boards, sits frowning, waiting for departure. And then a breathless, ruddy-cheeked guy with a cake tied with a ribbon rushes into the car and shouts into the phone: "Can you imagine, today is the most incredible day of my life! I was just running out of inertia, in despair, I was terribly late! And they are standing there, waiting for me! I'm coming! I'll make it to you on time! Hurray, right?!"

And we all smiled and relaxed, as if we'd all been waiting on the platform specifically so he could get there with his cake. Here we are, rolling, smiling, carrying a cake...

Not everyone likes it, but I find this environment very fascinating, despite its rough and cold appearance.

As mentioned, the abundance of siliceous and calcareous rocks combined with the strong winds of Bora/Bura and Scirocco/Jugo, prevent the rooting of humus and therefore the fertility of the soil, despite the fact that the entire area has some of the most abundant rainfall in Europe.

Even in the Mediterranean area, the Northern Adriatic has a temperate climate and rainfall distributed throughout the year, with minimums in February and July and a maximum in autumn, but all months have at least 60mm or 60l/m2 of rain.

Berlin boasts two zoological gardens, a consequence of decades of political and administrative division of the city. The older one, called Zoo Berlin, founded in 1844, is situated in what is now called the "City West". It is the most species-rich zoo worldwide. The other one, called Tierpark Berlin ("Animal Park"), was established on the long abandoned premises of Friedrichsfelde Manor Park in the eastern borough of Lichtenberg, in 1954. Covering 160 ha, it is the largest landcape zoo in Europe. In front of and behind the manor, the original design of the gardens was carefully restored. That is why you won't see any animals in this part of the enormous premises of the Animal Park. But you'll find plenty of them at a short distance.

Friedrichsfelde Manor house, designed in the early neo-Classical architectural style, is located in the Berlin Animal Park in the Friedrichsfelde district of Berlin. It was built in 1685 as Rosenfelde Manor by the Electorate of Brandenburg's Director General of the Navy, Benjamin Raule. This first five-axes building was probably constructed in the Dutch country house style according to plans by Johann Arnold Nering. In 1698, Benjamin Raule fell from grace and was imprisoned and expropriated. The castle fell to the Prussian Elector and later King Frederick I and was renamed Friedrichsfelde. After the king's death, the property was transferred to his half-brother Margrave Albrecht Friedrich von Brandenburg-Schwedt in 1717. In 1719, court architect Martin Heinrich Böhme enlarged the palace by three axes each to the east and west to its present width and added a three-winged Baroque staircase made of oak.

The castle survived the Second World War relatively undamaged. After the expropriation in the course of the land reform, both the building and the surrounding manor park fell into disrepair. When the decision was made in 1954 to create a separate zoo for East Berlin, the palace served for a few years as the headquarters of the organisers of the garden's conversion; parts of the building were used as stables for the zoo. It was not until the period between 1970 and 1981 that the castle was renovated on the initiative of Tierpark Berlin. The director of the Animal Park at the time, Heinrich Dathe, campaigned massively for the preservation of the manor house and prevented plans to demolish it.

I’ve long been inspired to go to Silver Falls SP in Oregon during the fall, but last year’s wildfires and pandemic prevented a planned trip from happening in 2020. This year, after working intense hours in my dayjob for most of the year, I seized on a small window of opportunity to do a quick weekend roadtrip from Sacramento to see the park in prime autumn color. I didn’t think I’d be able to photograph South Falls on a bright sunny afternoon when I first arrived, but the orientation of the falls kept it in diffuse shadow, perfect conditions for shooting waterfalls! There are many vantage points to use the golden maples as a foreground element to this beautiful 177-foot tall curtain of water and the blue color of South Fork Silver Creek.

Atop a rock outcrop ridge overlooking the barren strip mined wastelands significant of the Pennsylvania coal belt region, a faded purple 1970s era, MGB automobile emerged across the horizon, appearing to float above the tree topped hills. A head turner for sure, for upon second glance a red Ford pickup truck could also be spotted, upon which the MGB was ever so precariously balanced. A confusing sight to comprehend, especially while cruising at highway speeds down Interstate 81 while trying to maintain lanes. Soon the highway gently curved in toward the natural topography of the surrounding terrain and with it the hovering automobiles became obscured, lost behind a hill of trees. This all happened so quickly, I at first wondered if the bizarre sight was just a coal country mirage, perhaps my eyes were merely playing tricks upon me, fatigued by the endless expanse of repetitive woodland scenes.

With a desire to investigate further, I took the next exit and soon found myself walking along a railroad bed roughly paralleling the interstate highway I had just exited from. The strong summer sun beat relentlessly across my face, the dry heat amplified further by the coal and ashen laden soil which resonated the suns rays right back at me like a convection oven, evaporating my sweat before it could even form. The seldom used tracks cut along the base of a strip mined mountain, providing little shade. The further I walked the steeper the mountain became and the more I hated myself for leaving my water bottle back in the car. Unprepared to bushwhack up a sheer cliff face where I suspected up top the vehicles to exist, I decided to backtrack toward where I saw a power line cut meander up the mountain face. It became evident that this electric pole right-of-way was also actively used by ATVs and dirt bikes for a well worn trail zig-zagged up toward to my presumed destination.

The trail turned out to be quite treacherous as the loose dry sandy soil and gravel ripped up by barrages of ATVs, resulted in many steps forward actually being three steps backward. Despite the rapid regression at times, progress was made and the terrain began to level out. Atop the summit, a second narrower trail lead off in into the shaded woods. If it weren't for the spray painted sign reading "car totem pole --->" I'd probably have been lost and summited the mountain for no reason. This trail continued for a solid half mile until right before my very eyes the floating MGB appeared yet again. This time however I could be sure it was no mirage. As I walked closer I could see an iron beam had been driven through the center of at least half a dozen vintage automobiles all stacked upon another. Four guy wires anchored the vehicles to the ground below, preventing the vehicles from spinning around the pole like larger then life Christmas decorations. A car shish kebab I thought to myself, until I stopped and realized "no, it's a shish carbab", an automotive effigy that can truly only exist in Pennsylvania, land of abandoned automobiles. And with such a realization, I knew I had a future story and a photo title, but still no water and a steep climb back down a mountain ahead of me.

España - Orense - Allariz - Hórreo

***

ENGLISH:

An hórreo is a typical granary from the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula (mainly Galicia, where it might be called a Galician granary, Asturias and Northern Portugal), built in wood or stone, raised from the ground (to keep rodents out) by pillars (pegollos in Asturian, esteos in Galician, espigueiros Portuguese, abearriak in Basque) ending in flat staddle stones (vira-ratos in Galician, mueles or tornarratos in Asturian, or zubiluzea in Basque) to prevent access by rodents. Ventilation is allowed by the slits in its walls.

Hórreos are mainly found in the Northwest of Spain (Galicia and Asturias) and Northern Portugal. There are two main types of hórreo, rectangular-shaped, the more extended, usually found in Galicia and coastal areas of Asturias; and square-shaped hórreos from Asturias, León, western Cantabria and eastern Galicia.

The oldest document containing an image of an hórreo is the Cantigas de Santa Maria by Alfonso X "El Sabio" (song CLXXXVII) from the 13th century. In this depiction, three rectangular hórreos of gothic style are illustrated.

There are several types of Asturian hórreo, according to the characteristics of the roof (thatched, tiled, slate, pitched or double pitched), the materials used for the pillars or the decoration. The oldest still standing date from the 15th century, and even nowadays they are built ex novo. There are an estimated 18,000 hórreos and paneras in Asturias, some are poorly preserved but there is a growing awareness from owners and authorities to maintain them in good shape.

The longest hórreo in Galicia is located in Carnota, A Coruña, and is 35 m long.

***

With the backdrop of a 1960s white elephant that might actually come good - the Varsity Line flyover - DB Cargo Shed no. 66150 powers north on the supposedly "slow" lines at Bletchley with the 8.22am Dollands Moor - Daventry (6M45).

With few trains now timetabled to stop on the Fast line platforms, they have been fenced off with access through heavy-duty sliding barrier gates, one of which can be scene on the right. It's a sad state of affairs but security guards now patrol each platform enforcing the 'restricted access' - their role, to prevent suicides.

India, Kerala or Kēraḷam, Backwaters.

Kerala’s rich in fish, fertile unique backwaters, South India, a network of interconnected five large lakes linked by canals, both manmade, fed by 38 rivers & brackish lagoons extending nearly half the length of Kerala state. A labyrinthine system formed by almost 1.000 km of waterways lying parallel to the Arabian Sea coast, known as the “Malabar Coast”.

The backwaters have an exceptional ecosystem; freshwater from the rivers meets the seawater from the Arabian Sea, formed by the action of waves & shore currents creating low barrier islands across the mouths of the many rivers flowing down from the Western Ghats range.

A Thannermukkom Salt Water Barrier, preventing salt water from the sea is entering the deep inside, keeping the fresh water intact. Such fresh water is extensively used for irrigation purposes.

Numerous unique aquatic species including mudskippers, crabs, frogs, water birds such as kingfishers, darters, terns, darters & cormorants, animals like otters & turtles live in the backwaters area. Palm trees, pandanus bushes & other leafy plants grow alongside the backwaters, providing a green shade to the surrounding landscape.

Pensez y mesdames.

We the people can and should act now to help prevent the inevitable destruction caused by us. We cannot afford to keep on ignoring it. We have already created a crisis that we could have prevented and we only have ourselves to blame.

The loss of life, cities, homes, food, animal life is beyond imagination and this year, in particular, has created even more havoc. It is time to sit down and study the facts and the possibility of being responsible and good guardians and try and learn fully how to look after not abuse our globe.

Full moon and clouds prevented the nice stary and milky way shot... And a few stars can be seen anyway.

This spot is so famous for sunrise that as much as 70 photographers were there at the time the sun went up. And even beeing there two hours before sunrise (plus having a one hour drive) does not make you the first guy on the spot. A pitty.

Yes, the Chicago River does flow "backwards" in the sense that its flow was reversed in 1900 to prevent sewage and pollution from flowing into Lake Michigan. Instead, the river now flows away from the lake, towards the Mississippi River.
