Downtown Manhattan - NYC

The beautiful Church of St Mary and All Saints at Fotheringhay in Northamptonshire is noted for containing a mausoleum to leading members of the Yorkist dynasty of the Wars of the Roses.

The work on the present church, which sits on a slight hill overlooking the River Nene, was begun by Edward III who also built a college as a cloister on the church's southern side. After completion in around 1430, a parish church of similar style was added to the western end of the collegiate church with work beginning in 1434. It is the parish church which still remains.

The present Grade I-listed church is named in honour of St Mary and All Saints, and has a distinctive tall tower dominating the local skyline. The church is Perpendicular in style and although only the nave, aisles and octagonal tower remain of the original building it is still in the best style of its period. I particularly like the delicate flying buttresses. The church is regarded by Simon Jenkins as one of England's Thousand Best Churches.

The chancel was pulled down after the college was dissolved in 1553 following the Dissolution of the Monasteries. A grammar school was founded in its place which lasted until 1859.

Plas Cadnant Hidden Gardens

A historic garden under restoration, situated between Menai Bridge and Beaumaris on the Isle of Anglesey.

In 1996, the present owner bought the 200 acre Plas Cadnant Estate and work began on the restoration of the historic garden and grounds. Since then large parts of the gardens have undergone a spectacular transformation and have been restored to their former glory.

Described as one of North Wales best kept secrets is the hidden world of Plas Cadnant Gardens, situated at the side of the Menai Strait, hidden from view near to Menai Bridge on the Isle of Anglesey.

Former owners of Plas Cadnant were related to the Tremayne family of Heligan House, now famous for its Lost Gardens.

A new garden is being created on an historic site, becoming a plantsman's paradise. Now considered amongst the liveliest twenty gardens of Wales, and featured in a new book 'The Finest Gardens of Wales' by Tony Russell'. Also featured in 'Discovering Welsh Gardens' written by Stephen Anderton and photographed by Charles Hawes.

There is still much work to be done and we hope you will visit us in person or use the website to keep informed of our ongoing progress.

Three gardens in one

Three different gardens have been discovered, including an unusual walled garden with curving walls and pool, a secret valley garden with three waterfalls and river, and an upper woodland garden with stone outcrops and the remains of a 19c. folly.

- From Romeo and Juliet

The most perfect little music box, in the shape of a grand piano. And it plays the theme song of Romeo and Juliet - oh, the irony...

I absolutely love it. It couldn't be any more perfect.

I had a good day today.

Você vai ter que encontrar

Aonde nasce a fonte do ser

E perceber meu coração

Bater mais forte só por você

O mundo lá sempre a rodar

E em cima dele tudo vale

Quem sabe isso quer dizer amor

Estrada de fazer o sonho acontecer

Iowa Northern Railway train BUWA has IANR 4100, 3809, 3802, and 3803 for power on this December Sunday to make the run from Butler Yard near Shell Rock, Iowa to Bryant Yard in Waterloo. The train had 75 cars out of Butler, but have brought the head 15 into the CN Waterloo Yard for interchange. In the background EJE 667, still in orange, is paused in between it's duties as the yard switch engine, and a few other motors are laying around at the engine facility including EJE 658 in CN paint.

The CN is in the process of purchasing the IANR but is still awaiting STB approval, and so this is perhaps a bit of a look into the future. Meanwhile the past is well represented in this view too, as the Illinois Central Roundhouse here in the background has been present in at least in some form, (it's had stalls added and removed over the years) back to as far as 1901 (and possibly longer, it was hard to pin down a good date for the roundhouse construction from just some quick online research).

The Iowa Northern Railway uses the CN Mainline in Waterloo and Cedar Falls for a few miles from Waterloo West to Cedar Falls Junction as part of an arrangement going back to the 1980s and a highway project that saw the consolidation of some lines in Waterloo to make room for US 218. Normally from what I've seen the interchange work is typically done by the IANR in either direction at some siding tracks just west of Waterloo West and so they don't come into the yard like this. But occasionally when traffic warrants the CN will have the IANR come directly into the "A Yard" here at the Waterloo Terminal to make their setout and pickup as seen here. They would tie onto a cut of cars and shove back out of the yard to the rest of their train waiting on the mainline.

I had gone out after this BUWA even though it was likely to be a cloudy day because IANR 4100 on the point is one of the road's newest units (arrived to the IANR in August 2023 per some online notes, though it's originally a C&O unit) and still looks pretty sharp. But it was a nice bonus to get them making this less-common move, and this angle normally would be a heavily backlit-view if the sun were present.

Wooly booties with extra large pom-poms - what every girl should be wearing.

Today I wanted to post a photo from my archives of my niece handing a birthday present to me. I had this idea that I'd process the photo a little to make it fit into the Perfect Purple Saturday theme as well. It took me a while to actually find the photo from my archives as I was looking back to the year 2006 only to find out it was taken in 2005. Of course the photo wasn't exactly the way I pictured it in my mind. Maybe that's how our brain works or maybe I'm just getting old.

And indeed I am a year older today. It is my birthday today.

Mother Natures Birthday Present to me!

The gatekeepers cottage Arding NSW

This quaint little cottage is a relic from a way of life that has long been forgotten. Located on the Barleyfields Road railway crossing at Arding on the New England Tablelands, it was once home to the crossing's gatekeeper and his family. The gatekeeper was responsible for the operation of the crossing's timber gates. Whenever a train was scheduled to pass through the crossing, he would close the gates across the road, stopping all traffic.

Luck was with me with a train passing while I was there.
