When I first moved to San Francisco in 1996, I had hopes of becoming a photographer or Art Director/Graphic Designer working for the San Francisco Chronicle. Though, those dreams never were realized, I worked for a short while dedicating my time as a photographer to a local rag called- The North Beach Now. I didn't realize it at the time but, I would end up capturing a small and widely unknown piece of San Francisco lore. I feel fortunate to have been out shooting that day and for having met Matteo that afternoon. And still carry with me the stories he shared about growing up in North Beach. The story about Matteo Ciuffreda and this clocks unfortunate end is intriguing to me. My hope is that you appreciate the wonder of this story as much as I did. It serves as a simple reminder to me that we all lead fascinating lives. And though not everybody pays attention at times, life has a grande way of preserving itself through what we allow ourselves to share with each other.
The following story was published on October 21st 1999 in the San Francisco Chronicle.
Historic Clock's Owner Dies in S.F.
Jeweler didn't know treasure was wrecked
Matteo Ciuffreda, a San Francisco watchmaker and jeweler whose pride and joy was a North Beach street clock, died yesterday, only two days after the clock he loved was wrecked by a truck.
He was 82 and had been suffering from lung cancer, but it was almost as if the life of the old clock and the old man were intertwined. In fact, the clock had stopped before, under similar circumstances, back in 1959 when it stopped on the day Rocco Matteucci, its previous owner, died.
The clock would not run for 10 days. Matteo Ciuffreda, who was Matteucci's right-hand man, could not understand why it would not work, He made careful checks. There was nothing wrong with it. And then, as mysteriously as it stopped, it began to run again. Columnist Herb Caen said the clock was in mourning.
Matteo Ciuffreda then bought the clock and the jewelry business from the Matteucci family, and operated both for 40 more years at 450 Columbus. The clock, a masterpiece of the art, was 25 feet high and weighed two tons. It was a landmark, and a thing of gift and wrought iron beauty, and Ciuffreda took special pride in it. It was the apple of his eye, "his pride and joy," said Arlene Ciuffreda Hale, his daughter. Occasionally, he even spoke to the clock as if it were alive. He spoke to it on the day in 1959 when it began to run again. "He said, 'If you don't work now, I'll have to deal with you later,' Hale said, ~'And then he moved the pendulum and the clock began to tick again."
On Monday morning a truck making deliveries on Columbus Ave hit the clock while backing into a parking space and it smashed it into a hundred pieces. Ciuffreda was even then in the hospital, not doing well, and his daughter did not have the heart to tell him about what had happened to the clock. "He didn't know and I'm glad he didn't know," she said.
The North Beach clock's story is similar to the old tune by Henry Clay Work, about a grandfather clock that ran for 90 years -"days without numbering" and "stopped short, never to go again, when the old man died."

Ciuffreda was born in Italy, near the town of Monte Sant'angelo, in the Apulia region. His father was a jeweler and watchmaker in the days when trade was passed from father to son. Arlene Ciuffreda Hale, an only child, remembers her father telling her that he repaired his first watch when he was a boy of 10. He eventually had his own business and in 1943 married his wife Inez. They left Italy in 1947 and came to San Francisco, where he worked as a jeweler and watchmaker for Rocco Matteucci.
The business had been founded in 1886 and, with the great clock ticking outside, was an institution, "kind of an old barber shop where you would go to find out what was going on and get the latest gossip," said Dave Matteucci, Rocco's grandson. North Beach had a much stronger Italian flavor then; many of the families made wine in the basement, there were a lot of family-style restaurants, and even L'Italia, a daily newspaper published entirely in Italian. The shop was the center of old Rocco's life as it was for Matteo Ciuffreda. "He was a strong man who enjoyed life and loved his work, and loved people," said Ciuffreda’s daughter. "He was a wonderful man," she said. "I'm prejudiced, of course, but a lot of people agreed with me."
She is not sure whether the old clock can be repaired. With her father's illness and death, she put the clock on hold.
Meanwhile, the North Beach community is coming to the rescue. The North Beach Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a November I I luncheon at the Stinking Rose Garlic Restaurant at 325 Columbus Ave. to raise money to restore the clock.
