The medieval colleges of Oxford were clearly the inspiration for H. K. Rowling to create the magical world of Hogwarts and Harry Potter. And among these the most spectacular is Christchurch College.
Several scenes of the films, especially the first three, were shot in this impressive Gothic staircase. In both the movies and in reality, this is the magnificent preamble to the great dining room, both at Hogwarts and Christchurch... although the halls themselves are both similar and different.

My Camera was put away over the holidays, we had a great Christmas & Champagne brunch at the Little America in Flagstaff watched the snow fall and enjoyed the lightshow.
Boxing Day plan was to be at Monument Valley early the as we had a booked photo tour in Antelope Valley at 2:30pm and off we went at 4:00am to drive the 2.5 hours to realize upon arrival that I had sleepily entered Canyon de Chelly as the destination.
It was a white knuckle affair the whole way braving the ice and slush covered back roads and near misses with loose horses running on the roadways in pitch black but we saw great country.
After all that driving unfortunately the Canyon was closed upon arrival and it was another 2.5 hours to get to Monument Valley leaving no time to get any shots as we would still be 2.5 hours from Page, we had to be at our Antelope Valley Photo Tour at 2:00pm a bad triangle to get things accomplished.
Anyway after all the preamble this is my first processed shot from inside Upper Antelope Canyon.
Unfortunately my shots and some of the few days following mine until Dec 31 2019 will be the last tripod mounted shots by amateurs in Upper Antelope as they closed this to photo tours but they still offer them for the other three private slot canyons nearby.
I took this with my D750 and Tamron SP 15-30mm 2.8 G2 Lens at 26mm 4s, f/11 ISO 100 processed in LR, PS +Lumenzia

The reputation of dangerous places, things, animals is almost always exaggerated. It's not that it doesn't exist, but the danger is usually slight enough to justify the risk. For example, I was afraid the first time I visited New York City, expecting gangs and pickpockets at every corner. I've been close, very close to grizzly bears, lions, and other toothy critters. Yes, incidents do happen, but usually to people who aren't cognizant or just ignore the risk and go for a jog or carry food or do something else provocative. A friend of mine and others I know about swim with sharks. Pet them. One professional friend of mine gets out of the cage once in-a-while with great white sharks. He's still here to tell about it. All that rambling preamble to this image dates back to when I was warned not to go into wild dog country in an open vehicle. "They will kill you" I was told. Years later, on a trip with Todd Gustafson, one of the premier photographers in the world, we had the opportunity to photograph a pack of wild dogs. Like most wild animals, they have seen humans from the moment they could see. Inside a vehicle we were to be ignored, or maybe used as shade. The risk at the airport or driving in the rain over wet and slippery ground was much more dangerous than being close to a pack of wild dogs.

On the northern coast of the Netherlands, at Wierum, about 100 meters from the shore, there lies a shipwreck which becomes visible only at low tide. This wreck may be more than half a century old, but it represents an essential aspect of the cultural history of the Wadden Sea: the battle for land between man and nature which takes place here from the Middle Ages to the present day. Immediately below the dike is this praam, which probably ended up around 1955-1960. In the first instance the preamble washed westward, near the Schoorsterhoofd. Later she drifted in the direction of Wierum and finally got stuck in the mud. Since then, the praam has been slowly but steadily under the influence of ebb and flow.
Sun is in the meantime a bit up above the horizon but still hiding behind the clouds so as creating a natural filter. Light is soft, just as in daybreak, time to pack things and move... water is slowly creeping in and on the Wad, there is still a 100 m mud-walk back to shore.

It's a nice day for a snail wedding! Isn't the bridal bouquet lovely? I have heard that this 'heads up' posture with snails is a preamble to mating...
For Macro Mondays Valentine's Day theme 'Love'.
No snails were harmed in the making of this photograph.
I've written and rewritten this several times and I've decided to not print the screaming rant of dialog incessantly going through my mind, cross my fingers, and hope for the best. God help us all.
Rather, I'd like to say that I went ahead and paid for Pro, not that I want any of the 'perks', but because I love what we have here and I want to support it/us not just with words, but with deed. When the bug bit me I had no idea that this existed and now I've 'met' so many people from all over the world with their/your singular eyes and visions, thank you for being out there and bringing beauty into my den, sharing your humor, pains, and insights. May this year be better than last and a mere preamble to the happiness yet to be, we'll get through this together because as the man said, 'a house divided cannot stand.'
what's that? yes, I did take a three mile hike in my jammies. I was on vacation and thought there was a WalMart at the end... :)
I'd like to leave you now with one of the hundreds of thousands of people we lost this year, may none of them be forgotten.
[Preamble: I'm working on finally uploading my most memorable photographic experience to Getty, a stock photography agency that I regularly contribute to.] I'm going to tell the story of a life-or-death battle between two male lions and a full-sized adult male giraffe. The episode took place in 2016 on a safari tour with Vincent Grafhorst, a Botswanan professional photographer, guide, businessman and wonderful guy. The trip began from South Africa.
We spent the first day crossing the country headed for Namibia. Our first major stop was in the South African portion of Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. It's a unique park which has three doors which open to South Africa, Botswana and Namibia. We were in Vincent's Toyota Hilus, setup for safari and camping. We were following the course of a dry riverbed, where there were occasional water holes which attracted wildlife. During a heavy rainstorm we took a position by the riverbed hoping for a rainbow or other scenic weather shots. While waiting, I looked down the riverbed and could
spot from very far away a large giraffe, running toward us. Vincent guessed that it was being chased by hyenas. However, as it got closer, we could see two adult male lions in pursuit. Here's my first image of the story: a shot of the giraffe running for its life.
Castle Heeswijk is water citadel former at Heeswijk from the 11th century. The castle had been restored in 2005. Already in the year 1080 there a preamble of the current castle, so-called motte-burcht arose. In the course of the middle ages the motte (castle hillock) were blunted and on the place of the citadel a castle were built. Castle Heeswijk several times have played a role in the history. It did not succeed prince Maurits around 1600 up to two times to take the castle. It's halfbrother Frederik Hendrik succeeded in this in 1629, however, in, so that he could besiege then s' Hertogenbosch. In 1672 the sun king Lodewijk XIV the uninvited guest on castle Heeswijk were during its fight against the republic. On the end of the 18th century Pichegru, general still used the castle of the French revolution under the guidance of Napoleon, as a headquarter. In 1835, André bought baron of pine Bogaerde of Terbrugge the castle touched in decline and started immediately a massive reconstruction. For its growing collection art objects and curiosa, of him and of its sons, the noblemen Louis and Donat, the castle was extended with among other things the weapon room and the Irontower.
The current castle museum gives a picture of the life sitation and the collect tradion from the middle of the 19th century. After the recent restorations there meanwhile guided tours by the castle are possible. The weapon room of the castle does service as official marrylocation of the municipality Bernheze. In under the promenade cellar roofs lain (marry)partys and receptions are given and the carriage house of castle accommodate Heeswijk - and training facilities as well as congress - and presentation spaces meet.
if you want to see the castle and you use a car navigator is the end destiny is the Gouverneursweg, Heeswijk-Dinther

Koh Chang is the third largest island in Thailand after Phuket and Samui. White Sand Beach or Hat Sai Khao is located on the northwestern coast of the island, which is the centre of tourism, commerce and administration.
The tree with large leaves is Terminalia catappa which is also called beach almond or country almond. It is found in coastal areas in India, Southeast Asia and northern Australia. It is often planted for shade like in the photo.
Koh Chang is remembered in Thailand as the site for the Battle of Koh Chang, in which Vichy French naval squadron won a victory over Thai Royal Navy. It was a major battle of Franco - Thai war in 1941. Despite the victory in the battle, Vichy French was forced to cede some territories back to Thailand as Japan mediated a peaceful settlement. I suppose it was a preamble of Japan's southward expansion, which was doomed.

What better proof of the beauties of the Maremma Grossetana? This small beach, lonely and closed in a natural environment of great beauty where everything has remained uncontaminated for centuries and now preserved by the Bandite di Scarlino Park, on the Tyrrhenian sea in the province of Grosseto.
It takes its name from the tower that overlooks it from the top of the promontory, Torre Civette, built in the 16th century as a stronghold of the Principality of Piombino, strategically important for the view it managed to cover. Its appearance has been remodeled several times from the 18th to the 1900s and the farm with the tower is currently privately owned.
Without many preambles it is a pleasant and wild place as befits the coastal Maremma and represents one of the most solitary beaches in the province of Grosseto due to the difficulty of being able to reach it both by land, with a steep path, and by sea, fording the Alma stream in proximity of the mouth next to the beach of Punta Ala.
By the way, civette in English means owls...

“Deemed humanity’s Magna Carta by Eleanor Roosevelt, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948 established a baseline for human rights around the world in the wake of the devastation of WWII. Its 30 articles respect the dignity of every human being and commit to nondiscrimination, while also guaranteeing rights to education, nationality, marriage, and leisure. It was an ambitious, wholly idealistic document then, and now—with the declining trend of democracy around the world—the goalposts of the UDHR feel even further away.”
Lyrics:
Eleanor Roosevelt:
I'm going to read you the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
The preamble:
Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice, and peace in the world. Now, therefore, the General Assembly proclaims this Universal Declaration of Human Rights as a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations, to the end that every individual and every organ of society, keeping this Declaration constantly in mind, shall strive by teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and freedoms and by progressive measures, national and international, to secure their universal and effective recognition and observance
Article 1:
All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights
Kiki Layne:
All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights
They are endowed with reason and conscious
And should act towards one another in the spirit of community
Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this declaration
Without distinction of any kind
Such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth, or other status
Furthermore, no distinction shall be made on the basis of country to which a person belongs
Multiple languages:
Everyone has the right to life, liberty, and security of person
No one shall be held in slavery or servitude
Slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms
A little bit of a preamble. Off the coast of Perth is an Island called Rottnest Island. It is a paradise and always has been. It was a favourite destination for my wife and I but then we finished Uni and our careers took us to the USA and then to Queensland Australia for the rest of our working lives. We have now returned to Perth and went and visited Rottnest Island. So after 35 years, little has changed and we hope it will remain that way with rustic accomodation, no cars and very lay back lifestyle. The island is famour for the Marsupial called a Quokka. Reputedly the happiest animal in the world because of its smiling features. Also, all the celebrities who have visited the Island have got selfies with a Quokka. They roam freely around the Island (Quokkas and celebrities :-)). The only downside to this is that tourists have become preoccupied with trying to get a selfie with a Quokka rather than observing the beautiful little marsupials. I digress. This is a shot of the famous Quokka. This was outside of town in a disused area. I was lucky the light was perfect and the Quokka gave me permission to take his picture.
Kompong Chhnang (Cambodia) - Very few portraits taken during my recent trip to Asia. It is the only portrait of the series on the floating village. And again, it was the boatman who took me to the heart of the lakeside village. This is partly explained by the absence of a long focal length in my equipment. To have tighter shots, the boat would have had to come close to the floating houses and I would have pointed my lens under the nose of the inhabitants.
When I do portraits, especially with short focal lengths, I am in direct contact with the people photographed. In the preamble, so as not to play the intrusive cowboys, I exchange a few words with them. A posed portrait often follows, which I show them on the back screen. Then, when they have forgotten my camera a bit, I take photos that I hope will be more natural where the gaze is no longer directed towards me. A bit like on this photo where, even if the boatman is facing, you can see that he is not looking at me.
Wish You Were Here is the ninth studio album by the English progressive rock band Pink Floyd, released on 12 September 1975.
The album's themes include criticism of the music business, alienation, and a tribute to founding member Syd Barrett, who left seven years earlier with deteriorating mental health.
Wish You Were Here is Floyd's second album with a conceptual theme and was written entirely by Roger Waters. It reflects his feeling that the camaraderie that had served the band was, by then, largely absent. The album begins with a long instrumental preamble and segues into the lyrics for "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", a tribute to Syd Barrett, whose mental breakdown had forced him to leave the group seven years earlier. Barrett is fondly recalled with lines such as "Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun" and "You reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the moon".
Happy Anniversary, Wish You Were here
"So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell, blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
Did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
Did you exchange
A walk-on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?
How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found?
The same old fears.
Wish you were here."

This image is of one of the many isolated bays around the small Island. This place is located near the old Barracks and is a favourite place for mooring a boat and accessing the Island. Many of the Boaties bring bikes on their boat and park them on shore here. You just get off your bike and take a dip and continue on your exploration. It is heaven.
2S05 06.42 Nottingham -Skegness, slowing for the station stop. The waterway is the South Forty Foot Drain. This has its origins in the 1630s, with progressive improvements over the years and is the main drain for a large area of the Fens. It was navigable until 1971. The signal box replaced one on the water side of the track - no wonder it was heading into the Drain, it was on a very narrow footprint. You have to admire the 1960s architect for not compromising with the Brutalist design, it has quite some character, though with this type of architecture details do matter, the effect is spoilt by plastic windows and the boarding above, which preamble replaced wood and metal.
Today WAH are visiting Nerds and Geeks

If the camera equivalent to the human eye is a 50mm lens with an appeture of about f8, then any deviation from this is a creative decision.Even if you use the full automatic setting, this is a decision. So is photography art or science? In the early days of photography, photos were seen as "the truth" compared to say a painting, which is an impression. This led to the French photographers taking images of all French monuments and important buildings. As it was a historical record. So when people experimented with photography, the public and critics rebelled saying these images were no longer the truth. Science is truth! Any deviation is art. A slow shutter speed recording a waterfall with blurred water is the reason some people buy a camera. Others want a fast shutter speed to get lumpy bumpy water in stop motion. Neither are "right" as water is always flowing.
These random Monday morning thoughts are just a preamble to explain that I took just one lens to photograph this tree. A lens baby, specifically to blur the foreground to isolate the tree from distractions. In colour it is a very green and blue image. Originally all images would have been in mono, so not really true to how the eye sees the scene. Let me know your thoughts.
