The first adult European Mantis I have found this year. I was watering the Black-eyed Susan flowers, and the Mantis popped out from under some petals. Photo taken in our backyard in Camas, Washington.
Well, you almost had me fooled
Told me that I was nothing without you
Oh, but after everything you've done
I can thank you for how strong I have become
'Cause you brought the flames and you put me through hell
I had to learn how to fight for myself
And we both know all the truth I could tell
I'll just say this is "I wish you farewell"
I hope you're somewhere prayin', prayin'
I hope your soul is changin', changin'
I hope you find your peace
Falling on your knees, prayin'
I'm proud of who I am
No more monsters, I can breathe again
And you said that I was done
Well, you were wrong and now the best is yet to come
'Cause I can make it on my own, oh
And I don't need you, I found a strength I've never known
I'll bring thunder, I'll bring rain, oh
When I'm finished, they won't even know your name
You brought the flames and you put me through hell
I had to learn how to fight for myself
And we both know all the truth I could tell
I'll just say this is "I wish you farewell"
I hope you're somewhere prayin', prayin'
I hope your soul is changin', changin'
I hope you find your peace
Falling on your knees, prayin'
Ah sometimes, I pray for you at night, oh
Someday, maybe you'll see the light
Whoa oh, some say, in life, you're gonna get what you give
But some things only God can forgive
Yeah! (I hope you're somewhere prayin', prayin')
I hope your soul is changin', changin'
I hope you find your peace
Falling on your knees, prayin'

Mantis religiosa near Hanlon Creek, Guelph
I'm sorting through old photos from a period (of years) when I wasn't processing or sharing them much. I'm deleting a lot but will post any of particular interest.
On my verandah chair. About 12cms long including legs
The praying mantis is named for its prominent front legs, which are bent and held together at an angle that suggests the position of prayer.
By any name, these fascinating insects are formidable predators.
52 weeks with your camera 7/52
The Praying Mantis was actively doing a little claw maintenance in this shot - licking off the food remains from a recent kill no doubt. (yuk)

I was captivated by the beautiful curves of the Mantis against the rigid lines of the screen it was resting on.
He stared at me. I stared at him. I believe he was assessing whether or not he could eat me whole or in bits. I conceded the ground with a hasty retreat!

Don Henley - Praying For Rain
Driving through southern Utah I saw this rock formation and thought to myself it looked like someone praying for rain, had to stop.
The South African mantis (Miomantis caffra) was accidentally introduced to New Zealand from South Africa in the late 1970s.
Male mantis looking perhaps a little pensive at the thought of the impending perilous mating season.
My heart breaks , this is something that not one single country deserves..Our small but proud belgium is having a dark day but we will stand strong..
Tidda and I came upon this praying mantis who was standing in the middle of the trail. You will notice that the right forearm is missing. Looks like a pretty devastating injury and possibly quite recent.
Apparently, mantises are the only insects who can turn their necks to look sideways - and that's exactly how this mantis was keeping track of my feeble attempts to snap a photo. The bright sun rendered my screen useless and I had to hold back a curious Tidda with one arm. Finally, she/he lost interest in being photographed and proceeded over to a bush that seemed good for climbing upon.
Tidda and I continued on the trail but almost immediately were confronted by ANOTHER mantis! A brown one, and walking towards us quite rapidly! Tidda actually jumped to the side as she was startled. Upon closer inspection, I saw that the brown mantis had a similar traumatic amputation of one foreleg!! Had I stumbled into the middle of some epic battle that continued across multiple scenes??? Was the brown one coming to finish the fight?
I couldn't stay to see what would happen but I have no doubt some high drama took place there that afternoon.
This mantis has been hanging out on our driveway. I was crawling on my knees to get eye-level with it. Taken in Harding County, New Mexico, USA.
