Prairie Smoke is a perennial native wildflower found on high-quality native prairie sites. After pollination, the down-turned flower becomes upright and seeds wave the feathery plumes that give this plant it's common name.

These beautiful flowers were photographed on the Cornell WPA in LaMoure County, North Dakota.

The sky-blue flowers open in late morning and curl up before 3 in the afternoon, even on overcast days. Each flower only lasts one day. Once the seed has ripened, the bulb is renewed and the plant disappears until following spring. The bulbs colonize over time.

A member of the iris family (family Iridaceae) which consists of herbs growing from rhizomes, bulbs, or corms, with narrow basal leaves and showy clusters at the tips of long stalks. There are about 60 genera and 1,500 species, distributed in temperate and tropical regions. Among them, Iris, Freesia, Gladiolus, Bugle Lily, and Montbretia are popular ornamentals. Saffron dye is obtained from Crocus, and essence of violets, used in perfumes, is extracted from the rhizomes of Iris.

Prairie Dogs are the most social members of the Squirrel Family and are closely related to ground squirrels, chipmunks and marmots. There are 5 species of Prairie Dogs (genus Cynomys).

Vocalization

Prairie Dogs have a high-pitched, bark-like call. Recent studies suggest that Prairie Dogs possess the most sophisticated of all natural animal languages. They apparently issue different sounds identifying various predators, which include hawks, owls, eagles, ravens, coyotes, badgers, ferrets and snakes. Prairie Dogs can run up to 35 miles per hour for short distances. The Prairie Dog has only one defense that works -- raising the alarm and disappearing quickly.

Burned the Prairie Creek flood plain yesterday in the nick of time before nesting season -- which, here, is April through August. The burn went well, a back-burn into the wind first, then a burn with the wind. Hope we got rid of some of the invasives, though with the warm weather we've had this March, there were some spots too green to burn. This plain is in the Conservation Reserve Program.

Little Prairie Posie in her bonnet and apron is a character come alive from a classic storybook. She lives on a farm with chickens and cows, and plays in the meadow all day long. How can she not get a little bit of freckles on her fair white skin? She is beautiful redhead with long wavy hair. Her dress is simple country style long yolked dress, with a charming bonnet to top off her country lifestyle look. Her boots are practical yet adorably cute. She is a sweet memory of childhood days and our favorite country baby doll.

Her sherbet colored dress has lovely panel details of calico patterns, to match her big beautiful bonnet. The soft ribbon ties under her chin to frame her sweet, innocent face.

She’s all dressed up to go to a picnic in the the meadow!
