Having finished the descent off the back side of Crawford Hill here at Hemingford, it's just 20 miles of undulating prairie to the servicing stop at Alliance.

An aging, old grain elevator stands guard over the Montana prairie near Suffolk, Montana.

Grain elevators, it would seem, are everywhere on the eastern Montana plains. More often than not, though, they are are not functional, and in most cases they are decaying.

Some call them the "prairie sentinel," as they seemingly watch over the quiet prairie. But like the old red barns back home in Wisconsin, these magnificent, historical structures are falling into disrepair. They embody so much history, it is a shame they have to disappear.

Prairie Rose was a well-known performer in the early 20th century. She was known for her fancy handmade costumes as well as her skills. This card dates from around 1910-20.

Stone house on the prairie 35km west of Medicine Hat. Remains of stone walled barn still standing as well. Who ever built this place knew his *shit* per say as all the outer stones have been masoned and the corners of the building are still square. Nary a loose stone even after several decades spent exposed to the unforgiving elements...if ghosts could speak......

Prairie

Prairie refers to an area of land of low topographic relief that historically supported grasses and herbs, with few trees, and having generally a mesic (moderate or temperate) climate. (Lands typically referred to as "prairie" tend to be in North America.) It encompassed much of the area referred to as the Great Plains, and sizeable parts of the states of Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin and Minnesota. In Canada, prairie occupied vast areas of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. French explorers called these areas pririe, from the French word for "meadow". Sometimes, in the United States and Canada, a distinction is made between the shortgrass vegetation of the High Plains west of the 100th meridian and the midgrass and tallgrass vegetation to the east (from central Texas to southern Manitoba). When this distinction is made, it is common to limit the word "prairie" to the midgrass and tallgrass area. Almost all of this area has been converted into farmland in the last two hundred years. (The shortgrass area can be considered to be a steppe.)

Fire is an important part of prairie ecology; natural and human induced fires were common in historic prairie areas. Grazing by animals such as the American Bison and Prairie dogs also helped maintain the original prairie ecology. Small areas of prairies also exist in eastern North America, and it is possible that these were created by Native Americans by periodic burning. One such area was along the southeastern shore of Lake Erie in what is now Pennsylvania and New York; another was between Seneca Lake and Cayuga Lake in present New York.
