Prairie Plaza provides two benches and three interrpretive signs to help you enjoy the tallgrass prairie at Homestead National Monument of America.
When established in the 1930s, the park made the decision not to preserve John Freeman's farm, but the tallgrass prairie that farm plowed under. That's always struck me as a remarkable decision for the day.

They seem to be a little lazy. This one stretched himself very long so he wouldn't have to walk to get that bite.
One of the many paths through the prairie grass fields at Centennial Park on far southwest Springfield, Illinois.
It's one of my favorite places to walk near my home. The paths take me away from the roads and buildings of the city, and into the sounds, smells and sights of what the prairie would have looked like before the 1800's.
There wouldn't have been these carefully mowed paths, but the native plants would look much the same. Before the farm fields were carved into the prairie, most of the State of Illinois was like this. Gentle hills but mostly flat as far as the eye could see with trees along the waterways.
There are two such preserves that are part of the park system in our area. Both are on my top places to walk. It's quiet out here. Enough so that I can hear the bees buzzing in the wildflowers, the different birds calling, and the chipmunks barking at me as I pass.
Serene.

Lot of people think Kansas is flat prairie land. the Flint Hills in Kansas can be really steep and rocky. Here is an area where prescribed burn is taking place.

Great day out birding with John Fox ( omnitrigger). 4 Golden Eagles, one Bald Eagle, 2 light morph Ferruginous Hawks, 1 dark morph Ferruginous, and 2 Prairie Falcons. Beautiful day, and so nice to be outside again.

Northern California isn't the first place that comes to mind when you think about prairie land, yet we have miles of prairie land. Great for grazing cattle and wildlife.

Prairie Warbler (Dendroica discolor) - Halifax, Nova Scotia, September 13, 2014
A bird that is an uncommon visitor to us, and is seen on occasion during migration. This prairie gave me a few brief looks before it returned to the growth.
Thanks for visiting!
This was one of the largest prairie fires I have ever seen. It must be out of the ordinary for the burn crew as well because they stopped to take a picture too. This picture shows the scale of flames.
Hay bales sit in a field on the Saskatchewan prairie behind some weathered farm buildings. The sun has baked the dry mud of a farm road east of Cabri and south of Saskatchewan Landing Provincial Park.

Sunset light on the prairie at Blackwell Forest Preserve. This area is part of a large glacial kame. The grasses and wildflowers were amazing.
I must admit, I wanted to visit the ghost town of Dummer mainly because of its name. Once a thriving prairie village, it was apparently named for William Dummer Powell, a chief justice from Ontario. Dummer now has smattering of abandoned houses, some old rusty vehicles and a population of zero.

Witches Falls Circuit, Mt Tamborine, QLD.
The first outing with the new 5D Mark II.
Old 17-40. First was soft on the left hand side. This shot is still a bit soft up in the top left corner, but I like it enough to post it up.
It was a very muddy day. Slippery and just after the huge deluge Brisbane had. If fact it was still drizzling when I walked this path. I only had thongs as I misplaced my old Keen's (which busted last weekend! doh!) and ditched them to walk barefoot, the whole track. A pretty rewarding experience and a good way to reconnect to the Earth to get some positive energy back.
We were walking the circuit and noticed at the bottom of the circuit a closed off path. So we went right, looked at the falls (which only fall after heavy rain) and starting walking back.
Why not. Let's see if we can make it through.
First leg of track - this massive tree.
2nd leg of track - the first seasonal lagoon, which was over the path, but the path itself was a running river.
About another 100 meters down, the actual "Seasonal Lagoon". The water was up to the sign, and deep, over the path, easily groin height. Pretty surreal. As you can guess, the path was gone :) - so back the way we came and up the hill. In the mud. In the drizzle. Fun!!
About Prairie Dogging
In companies that use large numbers of cubicles in a common space, employees sometimes use the term prairie dogging to refer to the action of several people simultaneously looking over the walls of their cubicles in response to a noise or other distraction. This action is thought to resemble the startled response of a group of prairie dogs.

When I saw a rainbow begin to form, I grabbed this shot before I rushed off to a spot that would be perfect for the full bow...unfortunately the full bow never did form. Still, it is always a lovely sight to see such wonderful colors in the sky.
