Took the Prairie Dog Central from Inkster Junction to Grosse Isle during my vacation. What a beautiful train, the train staff were awesome and very entertaining. It is a good thing they were entertaining because the train is very slow, it travels at 10-15 miles per hour. Grosse Isle is a nice little town to visit.

A year later this female Prairie Falcon has returned to the grain terminal here in Edmonton. Ludo Bogaert first noticed the injured metatarsal of this bird last year and noted it again while we were shooting at it earlier this week. The top metatarsal sticks straight out. She can't seem to fold it.
I took the shot on the left on November 06 this year. The shot on the right is from last season. It is good to know that this hunter survived the year and that the condition of that talon has not hampered her ability to successfully hunt.
I gave the image on the right a horizontal flip so that the talons could be more easily compared, but I see that it makes it look like a different straight talon.

This plains wildflower has been planted and is growing well in a restored prairie plot in Miller Ecological Park in Lebanon, Ohio.
From Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology: "A tail-wagging yellow warbler with black streaks down its sides, the Prairie Warbler is found in scrubby fields and forests throughout the eastern and south-central United States, not on the prairies."

After the drama of New Mexican scenery, the quiet beauty of the prairie was appealing in its own way.
This is my pano take at that perfect astro night. That night there wasn’t one single puff of cloud and the Milky Way was low in the sky outside bedtime. I wasn’t as lucky when I returned a couple of weeks later for a day to night timelapse. #night

We found this Prairie Warbler in a tree farm in East Texas this past Friday. It was quite pleasing to see him flying from tree to tree singing his heart out. During our time watching this bird there was a massive termite emergence that eventually sent us running for our car but before that happened we got to see this bird along with several Brown-headed Nutatches gobbling up termites like crazy. Sadly, it was a bit too much of a challenge to hold the camera steady with all those termites buzzing in my face.

I've had this church on my visit list for a while but underestimated how photogenic it would be.
Obviously the wheat field is going to make this view one that doesn't last long so glad I found it when I did.
A walking trail leads through the tall grassland of the Zumwalt Prairie Preserve in a remote corner of northeast Oregon. The preserve is owned and managed by the Nature Conservancy. When I was there, it was raining and winds were blowing the tall grasses so that you could see waves ripple through the landscape. The preserve is the largest of native unplowed grassland in the USA.
We got to the place we hoped to find the Prairie Chickens two hours before the sun came up and waited for them to come in. The sounds that they make when it is still dark yet and throughout their mating rituals is almost as amazing as their antics. There are not many of these birds left and we need to do all we can to protect and expand their habitat.

The undersides of clouds are illuminated by the morning sun on the Dayton Prairie in Bertrand Township, Berrien County, Michigan.

I posted a three shot sequence of this Prairie Falcon strike. They are all part of the same 9 fps burst. I have never seen the Falcon catch a Pigeon by the leg before. She came up from under it.
This was also one of the rare times I have seen the Falcon approaching from a distance before the Pigeons perceived her, so I was locked on before the Pigeons rose in their typical "panic flight". The whole event took about 30 seconds from her time of arrival. I hope you find the sequence interesting and Happy New Year to all.

This prairie dog was not happy with our presence. She was giving the prairie dog alarm call.
We had a squeaker in the car, and started squeaking it....every single prairie dog in the vicinity came out and stood up...some even approached the car to find out where this sound was coming from. Maybe we were saying something interesting in prairie dog speak!
