Žofín – An Island of Culture in the Heart of the City

Located on Slovanský Island and embraced by the calm flow of the Vltava River, Žofín Palace is one of Prague’s architectural gems. Built in 1837 in neo-Renaissance style, it was named after Archduchess Sophie, mother of Emperor Franz Joseph I. Since the 19th century, Žofín has been a center of cultural life – legendary composers such as Bedřich Smetana and Antonín Dvořák performed here, and the palace continues to host prestigious balls, concerts, and conferences.

In the foreground, the quiet river reflects the surroundings, with paddle boats resting before the summer season. Behind the palace, the elegant facades of Masaryk Embankment glow warmly in the light. This view captures not only the beauty of a historic island, but the very soul of Prague’s cultural heartbeat.

Shortly before sunrise, Prague looks like a movie set.

There are a couple of views of Prague that remain with me in the deepest sleep; this would absolutely be one of them. From the castle hill lookout, much of Prague's incredible architecture can be viewed. In this photo. The Manesuv Most bridge takes us over the Vltava River where the Rudolfinum - home of the Czech Philharmonic - meets us. Center stage opens up with the spires of the Tyn church looming over the Old Town Square with all the authority the 14th century church has earned. To the left and rear of the Tyn Church stands the dark, stately Powder Tower which is one of the last remaining structures of the old city gates - separating old town from new. Reaching heights not seen anywhere else in the Czech Republic, the Zizkov Televison Tower stands tall in the back of the frame. Built by the communists to reportedly jam incoming radio and television signals from the West, it is today a tourist attraction. The Czech sculptor David Cerny dressed the tower up a bit after the fall of communism by attaching 10 of his "crawling babies" to the side - hopefully adding some charm and removing some of the local resentment to the eyesore that reminds them communism is in the not too distant past.

The Vltava reflects some of the grand riverside residential buildings found near the Bridge of Legions in Prague.

Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic. It is also the historical capital of Bohemia proper.

Prague has been a political, cultural, and economic centre of central Europe with waxing and waning fortunes during its 1,100-year existence. Founded during the Romanesque and flourishing by the Gothic and Renaissance eras, Prague was not only the capital of the Czech state, but also the seat of two Holy Roman Emperors and thus also the capital of the Holy Roman Empire.

The Dancing House (Tančící dům), or Fred and Ginger Building, is the nickname given to the Nationale-Nederlanden building in Prague, Czech Republic.

It was designed by Vlado Milunić in cooperation with Frank Gehry. It was completed in 1996.

In spring 1999, my son, Brian, spent six weeks backpacking through Europe.

This is his picture of the building.
