The second album by New Order, released on 02 May 1983.

With its electronic-based sound it marks the definitive turning away from the rather gloomy predecessor and the Joy Division legacy. The album was included in the top 100 albums of the 1980s lists in the Rolling Stone magazine.

This title should be the slogan for the populist (right-wing even if he denies it) government that we have in my country right now. I am sure that are some of you have governments that would be proud to use this motto, too.

This song is "We All Stand"

"Three miles to go

Three miles to go

At the end of the road

There's a soldier waiting for me

I've got three miles to go

Three miles to go

At the end of the road

There's a soldier waiting for me

At the end of the road..."

Nicola Sacco (April 22, 1891 – August 23, 1927)

Bartolomeo Vanzetti (June 11, 1888 – August 23, 1927)

Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were two Italian immigrant anarchists living in the United States in the early 20th century. Sacco, a shoemaker by trade, and Vanzetti, a traveling salesman, were dedicated to work, family, and their political beliefs: they dreamed of a more just world, free from the oppression of the wealthy and authoritarian institutions. They were not violent criminals and had never committed murder; their lives reflected civic engagement and the pursuit of social justice.

In 1920, a robbery with murder in Massachusetts led to the arrest of Sacco and Vanzetti. The evidence against them was weak and contradictory, based on dubious testimonies and ethnic prejudice. Many historians — including Howard Zinn and Paul Avrich — argue that they were convicted more for their political beliefs, their Italian ethnicity, and their anarchism than for any concrete evidence of guilt. Other potential perpetrators were ignored or protected by the authorities.

During the seven years of trials and appeals, Sacco and Vanzetti maintained their dignity and steadfastness in their convictions. They were sentenced to the electric chair and executed on August 23, 1927, becoming universal symbols of injustice, political persecution, and discrimination. Their story serves as a reminder that true courage is staying faithful to one’s principles, even in the face of power and death.

I publish this series of figures to awaken awareness, especially among young people, about the injustices carried out by those in power. These individuals gave their lives defending freedom, justice, and the rights of the oppressed. By remembering their courage and sacrifice, I want to inspire reflection and show that the people, united and conscious, are the only force capable of resisting oppression and standing up against abuse and injustice.

This is my entry to Beck's Music Inspired Art thingy...

And here's some thoughts about the album, as that's what they ask...

I think Low Life is probably my own favourite New Order album, but Power, Corruption & Lies is never-the-less pretty good. It was actually the first New Order album I bought, back in 1985. I loved the colour codes on the sleeve, and the complete lack of information, which at the time made the band seem all the more mysterious to me. Whenever I think of the album, musically & colour wise, (in the way that Low Life is quite gray in sound), PCL feels quite dark with speckles of bright colours. I suppose this is because of the minimal, but colourful, electronic sound. It also seems an album of songs quite sad and those quite happy, and because of this, I've choose pretty moody dark colours, and also pretty sunny ones, each fighting for attention. It was in trying to figure a way of merging these opposite moods together, that I thought of trying this type of pattern, but it was also influenced by a work by Anton Stankowski & Max Bill, whose work I'd been looking at over the weekend.

New Order's sleeve designer, Peter Saville, was one of the reasons I became a graphic designer, and I later ended up studying like him at Manchester Poly by the same lecturers. Because of his creative shadow over New Order's sleeves, it's hard not to do something quite Saville-esque,

New Order gig at the O2 Academy in Glasgow on 05-05-12.

This double EP from Cabaret Voltaire first appeared on Rough Trade in a superbly designed fold out envelope-type sleeve. The matt black outer sleeve was designed by the Cabs themselves -with the only graphic detail being the band name and the title of the disc- whereas the inner was designed by the celebrated graphic designer, Neville Brody. Very smart but you have to be very careful when opening not to rip the bloody thing apart!

The characters on this black banner said, "Don't let Lee Hsin lose this election," but viewed from this perspective appear to read "Don't elect Lee Hsin." I guess the tactic worked, as he was elected to the Taipei city council.

ROYAL PROPAGANDA: A STATEMENT FROM BUCKINGHAM PALACE

His Majesty has today initiated a formal process to remove the Style, Titles and Honours of Prince Andrew.

Prince Andrew will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor. His lease on Royal Lodge has, to date, provided him with legal protection to continue in residence. Formal notice has now been served to surrender the lease and he will move to alternative private accommodation. These censures are deemed necessary, notwithstanding the fact that he continues to deny the allegations against him.

Their Majesties wish to make clear that their thoughts and utmost sympathies have been, and will remain with, the victims and survivors of any and all forms of abuse.

ENDS

WTF? What century are the Royal family living in with this medieval feudal nonsense? Why do we let them patronise us from their tax-funded palaces of anti-democratic opulence?

This full-page ad appeared in the UK trade magazine "Music Week" in December 1986. This was one of the rare times when Factory bothered to promote its wares to the rest of the music biz. As far as I know, none of the DAT tapes was ever released, apart from the New Order "Substance" one.

Donald Trump, a sharp critic of the US invasion of Iraq, will now have to heed the words of one of the American architects of the Iraq War, Secretary of State Colin Powell, "If you break it, you own it."

Mexico, not Venezuela, supplies almost all of America’s fentanyl. Trump on Saturday also warned Gustavo Petro, Colombia’s leftwing president, to “watch his ass”. Colombia, not Venezuela, supplies most of America’s cocaine.

Whatever way that pans out, Trump’s new world order is now very much a reality. It consists of no obvious rules, does not respect allies, celebrates the jungle and is almost always about money...

Colin Powell (1937–2021) was an American Army general, diplomat, and statesman who was the 65th United States secretary of state from 2001 to 2005. Originally a member of the Republican Party, he was the first African-American to hold the office. He was the 15th national security advisor from 1987 to 1989, and the 12th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1989 to 1993.

Powell was born in New York City in 1937 to parents who immigrated from Jamaica. He was raised in the South Bronx and educated in the New York City public schools, earning a bachelor's degree in geology from the City College of New York. He joined the Reserve Officers' Training Corps while at City College and was commissioned as a second lieutenant on graduating in 1958. He was a professional soldier for 35 years, holding many command and staff positions and rising to the rank of four-star general. He was commander of the U.S. Army Forces Command in 1989.

Powell's last military assignment, from October 1989 to September 1993, was as Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman, the highest military position in the United States Department of Defense. During this time, he oversaw twenty-eight crises, including the invasion of Panama in 1989 and Operation Desert Storm in the Persian Gulf War against Iraq in 1990–1991. He formulated the Powell Doctrine, which limits American military action unless it satisfies criteria regarding American national security interests, overwhelming force, and widespread public support. He served as secretary of state under Republican president George W. Bush. As secretary of state, Powell gave a presentation to the United Nations Security Council regarding the rationale for the Iraq War, but he later admitted that the speech contained substantial inaccuracies. He resigned after Bush was reelected in 2004. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colin_Powell

Being apart from my natural environment hurted in me, but to watch my brothers fall one by one in the field of life and death was terribly worst. I lost them due to the ignorance coming out of the enemy’s weaponry.

And I thought…

I thought maybe they weren’t prepared as a race to love or to be love (or both) and perhaps it would be easier for them to act without fully concern.

Who knows, maybe conscience didn’t take part at their natural-born language and maybe even true feelings wouldn’t develop until a not yet reached maturity.

Or maybe they developed a science full of weapons, power, corruption and lies, wires, setting themselves apart from other living beings. After all, it must be strange to coexist in a planet with so many life forms, with so many other creatures and not being able to communicate with them. And -maybe- communication was the cause of their main problems.

On all that I thought while we were reaching the last city far in the south.

In 2014, Virginia Giuffre alleged that, as a 17-year-old, she was sex trafficked to Prince Andrew by convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Andrew denied any wrongdoing. Following criticism for his association with Epstein, Andrew resigned from public roles in May 2020, and his honorary military affiliations and royal charitable patronages were removed by the Queen in January 2022. He was the defendant in a civil lawsuit over sexual assault filed by Giuffre in New York State. The lawsuit was settled out of court in February 2022; in the settlement, Andrew paid an undisclosed sum to Giuffre. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince_Andrew_&_the_Epstein_Scandal

“To grasp the depths of our current misery, it helps to start with a classic story of collapse. When the great historian Edward Gibbon described the decline of Rome, he didn't speak in vague abstractions. He gave us names, dates, and details, page after page of cowardice and corruption. Reading the decline and fall of the Roman Empire is like watching a civilization rot in slow motion. Sadistic emperors on gilded thrones, generals who sold out their own armies, and senators who cared more for spectacle than statecraft.

And yet what shocks you most when you read Gibbon today isn't the depravity, it's the familiarity. Gibbon wrote about politicians who lacked seriousness. Elites who lacked virtue, and societies that mistook decadence for progress. 2000 years later, we live in an age where billionaires dodge their taxes, politicians perform instead of govern, and media barons profit from lies and hatred. The Roman elite fiddled while Rome burned. Our elites live-streamed the fire and monetized the smoke. Immorality and unseriousness. Those are the two defining traits of our leaders today. And they're not accidental flaws, but the logical outcome of what I call the survival of the shameless. Today, it's not the most capable who rise, but the least scrupulous. Not the most virtuous, but most brazen” --Rutger Bregman
