“Seafair Indian Days Pow Wow is an annual event featuring competitive dancing and singing, food booths, salmon bake, arts and crafts booths and other special entertainment. This event has a two fold goal: to bring together Indian communities from the Northwest and beyond and just as importantly, to bring together the non-Indian community in joining tribes to learn about, enjoy and participate in Indian culture." One from the archives. This is Nathaniel's artwork..... One of his final pieces of his A level. I had to photograph his work so he could use it in his University applications

He posed specifically so that the speech bubble was coming from him.

A Native American child dances at the 50th Pow Wow at California State University, Long Beach, in Long Beach, California, on March 12, 2023. The Pow Wow was the first since the COVID-19 pandemic. The university sits atop Puvungna, sacred land that serves as the location of the creation myth of multiple Southern California tribes.

Ignaz -or Ignace- Rothenberg (1884-1964) had been a newspaper editor and professor of economic history in his native Austria before the War. In February 1939 he and his wife succeeded in boarding the Dutch ship “Christiaan Huygens” at the Italian port of Genoa and by this means were able to begin a new life in Cambridge, England, after their release from internment.

Seven lectures entitled “Peculiarities of the British Press” were delivered to approximately 200 POWs at the main camp and 6 hostels (Garswood, Golborne, Kirkby, Satellite Camp Bury, Penketh and Myerscough) over the period 17-21 May. Interest in the lectures was evidently rather less than Dr Rothenberg had anticipated, as he says-

“While in some hostels the attendance amounted to 50% and more, in the Main Camp and in the Satellite Camp Bury 10% and 5% respectively were present. My inquiries into the reasons of the deplorable attendance have not met with a satisfactory result... Since this absenteeism dates back some considerable time, it is obviously not the subject of the lecturers but lecturing itself which is disliked by the majority of Ps/W... However the situation is not hopeless. The young and ambitious P/W who is now in charge of re-education, while strictly observing the principle of voluntary attendance of lectures, will attempt to create a greater interest … by meetings in which the value of re-education should be discussed with those who do not attend, and by articles in the camp paper. He will also try to gain the co-operation of the camp-spokesmen, most of whom do not care much about lectures...”.

He adds that

“Two days after my lecture [at Penketh] all of [the c.90 Rumanian -or “Auslandsdeutsche”- POWs there] were shifted to Scotland”.

Dr Rothenberg subsequently emigrated to the USA. There he wrote for various publications on the themes of press freedom and the protection of personal privacy, and served as a consultant to the UN on matters pertaining to the Geneva Convention on the Freedom of Information. His book “The Newspaper: A Study of the Daily Newspaper and its Laws” was published in London and New York in 1947-8.

Image from the fall of 1996 (I think this was the Pow Wow I attended in the city park in Zion, Illinois). I loved his headset (or whatever it is named) and the look on his face - so serious.

The Hanoi March

One of the most flagrant exploitations of American prisoners took place in July 1966, when 52 POWs were forced to walk handcuffed in pairs through the streets of Hanoi to fuel North Vietnamese public anger. The North Vietnamese filmed the march to show humiliated Americans at the mercy of angry communists. The march turned violent, and many POWs were attacked and beaten. The authorities lost control of the crowd near the end of the hour-long march, and both the POWs and guards had to fight their way to safety. Nearly every POW was injured. The march backfired on North Vietnam because the propaganda film showed a violent mob attacking defenseless captives.

A Tucumcari Route 66 staple, the Pow Wow Restaurant and Lizard Lounge (attached to the Pow Wow Motel), has eerily realistic murals painted on the inside walls where the booths are attached, giving you the impression that couples are happily going about their dining duties. The patron saint of the Lizard Lounge is the statuesque Lizard Woman, a tall blonde whose mural presides over the karoake bar and dance floor.

"A German prisoner of war takes a break from his hired labour in Ellicott City, Maryland. Captured in Italy, this young man finds the States very much to his liking. Axis prisoners are brought from Baltimore to Ellicott City by rail, and there "hired out" to local farmers." (Recreated as part of my "Vintage" series.)
