Although I realized the potential for a good composition here more than a year ago already, it was only when I drove past this spot just before sunset a couple of days ago… that the conditions were perfect for what I wanted to try to achieve.

Have a great weekend everyone!!

Today had great potential - shame it didn't materialise.

Turned out overcast with odd showers. The forecast for this afternoon is better.

Even though I have been retired for a few years, I am thinking of forming a construction company to convert suitable existing buildings into man caves. My idea is to thereby re-cycle buildings and help men, who are at a historical nadir in their social and educational evolution compared to women, to become well rounded and productive members of society. And maybe I could make some pocket change for my dotage.

Flamingo Gardens in Davie, Florida is a fun place to take a stroll with a camera. Like many commercial gardens, there's a spot just perfect for outdoor weddings. Anticipating the next day's nuptials, florists began decorating. This peacock decided to add to the atmosphere with its colorful plumage. Not sure if he attended the actual event!

A Parasitic Jaeger is seen in flight with two small fish in its bill — whether it obtained them itself or by theft from another bird is unknown. It was thrilling to watch the action as several of these members of the Skuas family took passes at various gulls and terns, and made twisting maneuvers when they located a potential ‘donor.’ The interactions took place off Cape Merry near the town of Churchill in the northern part of the Canadian province of Manitoba. [This species is called Arctic Skua in the Old World.]

Strobist/technical info:

The scene is a 34-image focus stack composite. It was illuminated by two Nikon SB900 speedlights, CL/CR, fired in Manual mode @ 1⁄16 power through Neewer 24" soft boxes.

The SB900s were triggerd by PocketWizard Plus Xs.

Appearing like a volcano, this tree stump had me returning for the light. Three times I came back to this place after recognizing the potential. Each day the light would rim the stump but not give what I was looking for. On the final attempt, the light leaked from between the trees. However, it only lit one side. Off I went to enjoy the forest trek only to return for another attempt. This time the light delivered.

At its peak, the rim was lit all around, giving the desired look. The spotted light all about it worked out well to support the main subject, so it too was included. Sometimes, a little persistence goes a long way.

The Maine coast has always fascinated me, ever since I visited my grandparents there as a boy, and then later when I moved there myself, and even later yet when I went back to visit my parents there when they were still alive. I've never been anywhere where the sea and coast had such a dramatic relationship, the moods changing quite dramatically sometimes in a short while. In my business that would be referred to as emotionally labile. Not sure that makes a very good title for an photograph, but it is hard not to feel the scene as well as see it when I'm there.

Life starts small and grows. Cones hold seeds that become giant trees and young fawns grow to become strong bucks. New life has so much potential.

Magnolia bud. I think the buds are prettier than the flowers on this particular type.

Everybody has different approach to a photographic composition. You may approach a composition in different ways, depending on how it catches the eye. You may see the subject from a far, approach and circle it doing little framing actions with the hands looking for the right angle, position and elevation. One may instantly see the potential and hover backwards and forwards trying to find a good stance for the tripod. Let’s face it the ways are endless, they say creativity feeds the soul. However with this scene all I was interested in was a tazza e caffe. I was attracted to this fallen tree las potential for parking my bum, I was tired I needed a coffee and a snack and this trunk was as good a place as any. However I was not totally thoughtless in my approach, just as I would be very careful on where I placed my feet in wet sand, here I was extra vigilant on the surrounding vegetation, pity I didn’t have the same idea about the frost covered tree trunk. Maybe I should have dealt with my carelessness with Lightroom, but where’s the fun in that, can anyone see where I was sitting?

Arranged for the Macro Monday theme "Four" this might be a winning hand ... or not.
