The Racket is a writing series based in San Francisco where every month a new topic is chosen and a selected group of writers will read short stories they've written on that subject.

Posters are handed out at the event for the participants and attendees.

Originally, I had this grand vision of shooting a very moody image of a typewriter floating in mid-air draped with a white sheet. It involved an elaborate lighting and photography rig that, despite fighting with it for most of a weekend, never lived up to my original concept.

Nevertheless, I still had this vintage typewriter on hand and kind of like where this ended up even more.

House Tully

Sigil - Silver Trout

Motto "Family, Duty, Honour"

After watching the awesome Game of Thrones series I became slightly obsessed with each of the House's and their identity or sigil.

Having found the houses and their representative sigils. I set about creating a vector for each one of them and creating a poster. I hope you like them as much as I do.

The final A2 poster for the advertising group, Publicis. A few minor changes were made, but mostly kept the same.

Work at the station has recently uncovered these amazing advertising posters in non-public areas and that date from c1956 - 1959 when the station's lifts were removed and replaced by escalators. These are in an old lift passageway.

This poster is for the 1956 film "Around the World in 80 Days", then in its "second year" and it was showing at the Astoria Theatre in Charing Cross Road - a venue just demolished for the Crossrail extension to Tottenham Court Road station.

We will be leaving these intact - and please do not pester the station staff as the posters are wholly inaccessible - which is why they've probably survived 50 odd years!

I was approached by my old colleague Adam Larson (Adam&Co) for a commissioned piece in the vein of the vintage film prints I had done and create a piece for a new boutique hotel in Boston.

This is the biggest piece like this I have ever done and I also think it's the most successful.

Like the other film packages, the original color plates are separated back out and placed at various scales and in wholly new orders. Also, I opted to show the ionic Polaroid color bars from the packaging as loosely painted lines which makes this feel a bit more dynamic.

It has been a good challenge with these posters to bring in some photography and in this case, a LOT of photography. To create all the letterforms, 8 pairs of classic "celebrity" sunglasses were broken and photographed. The letters were then assembled digitally with a large heaping of retouching to remove errant reflections in the lenses.

A lithographic poster for the well-known Birmingham custard powder manufacturer, Alfred Bird & Co., and dating from c1925. Sadly no artist or designer is credited for this vibrant image of the child dressed in a take on Native American headdress that is described as the "Indian Boy Chief" in the accompanying text - representations of native culture being more freely appropriated at the time.

Bird's were the company who were the first to introduced 'convienience' custard powder in the early Victorian period and went on to help popularise similar products such as baking powder and blancmange . They were also highly successful in marketing this as part of the new age of manufacturing and advertising. Although the factory site survives in Birmingham city centre as an arts venture the company, now part of Premier Foods, moved to Banbury many years ago having been part of the General Foods/Kraft stable.

The road wasn't easy, the road was long. There were many obstacles, misunderstandings, outright meanness, deceit and betrayal. And if I could tell it in detail, I could write a whole book. I guess I'm gonna write it some day. Luckily, I had the strength of spirit, confidence and character with me. When the resistance was too strong, I was even stronger when they wanted to humiliate me, I was always ready to fight back, because for every false word they said about me, I had two true words on my side. The road led me up. And I walked with persistence. This road led me to success in my endeavors, that was the goal. And when I achieved what I want, it was the best reward for my efforts. I felt good, happy, I was on the seventh sky.

勇, Yu: Eroico Coraggio

勇, Yu: Heroic courage

High above the masses who are afraid to act like a turtle hiding in

shell is not living. A Samurai should have a heroic courage, this is risky and

dangerous, it means living in a comprehensive, full, wonderful. The heroic courage is not blind, but smart and strong.

Many people now know the story of the uncovered and disused ex-lift passageways in Notting Hill Gate tube station that LU workers rediscovered in 2010 after 50 years of being sealed up. I've now added a few more pictures to the set - a set that has garnered more attention that I could have ever imagined!

This is a slightly wider view of a group dominated by movie of film posters - with a range of more damaged posters to the right that include London Transport's own ones and a fine Peposdent toothpaste poster - the bright smile still ringing true after 60 years!

The posters and passageways have, after much thought, been re-entombed and are again inaccessible so please don't pester the station staff

WORDS OF “ENCOURAGEMENT” for 2019 Chicago Marathon Participants from @DEPRESSIONPRESS MFG. & INK, INC.

--

Every fall, thousands of suspiciously eager Chicago Marathon runners head through the heart of Pilsen past Chicago Art Department. This year, we’re “proud” to display hundreds of signs featuring various words of “encouragement” hand-printed by two of the city’s most reluctant optimists—K. James Henderson & Dud Lawson of Depression Press Mfg. & Ink, Inc.

Join Kent (art) & Dud (copy) for an opening reception Friday, Oct. 11 from 6-10pm and come back the morning of Sunday, Oct.13 for booze, carbs, and a front-row view of the longest, most tedious sporting event in the Midwest.

Words of Encouragement on view Oct 11 to Oct 25

To show off the technical and price advantages of using Paramat's 'Paracut' rubber printing mats for lithographic printing the company reproduced this colourful poster for Hadfield's "He-O-Lin" paints in The British Printer, May 1934. It is a reproduction of an "actual job" and used standard inks manufactured, in this case, by A B Fleming & Co Ltd of Caroline Park, Edinburgh.

Hadfield's were based in Merton, south London, and although in existance as a varnish manufacturer from possibly as early as 1840, in 1917 they purchased from the Government the works of Charles Blume's that was wound up under the Trading with the Enemy Act. They merged in 1969 they merged with Bestobell and subsequently the works were closed.

Guns N 'Roses Poster Contest *Appetite For Destruction * for the 30th birthday! *******

This art represents the Rocket Queen, which too, is one of my favorite songs. Style: Vintage/Retro. Technique used: Drawing made with graphite and watercolor pencil. The roses were drawn separately and then I made the assembly in the drawing. I also used digital effects and textures.

One of a series of works commissioned by the Leeds based company "The Bedding House of Rhodes" who sold under the trade name of Somnus from the Leicester based artist and designer Frank Gayton. As well as these rather fine posters, based on the themes of Good Night and Good Morning, Gayton also designed other advertising and publicity, such as showcards, for Somnus. The brand is still around, now part of the Yorkshire based company of Harrison Spinks.

Gayton (1893 - 1961) also designed packaging and other items of 'corporate identity' for several companies, including Leicester based Frears, the biscuit makers. The 1926 article that quotes this image notes his skills in lettering such as on this poster. Gayton, who headed an advertising agency based in Leicester, also designed a typeface for the London & North Eastern Railway in c.1923/24 that was also adapted for use by the typefoundry of Caslon.
