Not suggesting for a moment that this is postcard quality but I've been away from Flickr for a while and wanted to let you know that my shutter finger is still operational.

This shot was taken from a recent overnight trip to Oban on the west coast of Scotland. The island of Kerrera can just be seen on the left, the small Maiden Island is on the right, and the cloud covered mountains of Mull are in the far distance behind the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry.

It's good to be back folks....and it used to be traditional to send a card when you've been away.

Greetings from Venice to all my Flickr's friends!

I have always loved this scene that is shown on travel posters and promos on television. Gondolas are truly magnificent boats. Their timeless beauty adorn the waters of Venice as a testament to the romantic allure of this city surrounded by water.

EXPLORE #20 THANK YOU MY FRIEND!!!!

Digging out one from my two glorious days on the Brocken last year. The sun doesn't shine often on the former GDR's highest mountain but when it does one can be guaranteed postcard perfect pictures. The Harzer Schmalspurbahn (HSB) is one of the busiest steam railroads in the world with trains running almost every hour, every day, all year.

Lucerne

The city of Lucerne, with its famed - and much photographed - medieval Chapel Bridge, one of the oldest covered bridges in Europe (1).

Lucerne, a city in central Switzerland with approximately 80,000 residents, is absolutely beautiful and visiting it was one of the highlights of our trip. Life in Lucerne may be challenging for residents, however, as the city attracts nine million visitors (mostly day-trippers like me) each year (2). These visitors, many of whom come by large coach, snarl traffic, fill the streets, public squares and and restaurants, and in general, radically change the city dynamics each and every day. Research suggests that day trippers to Lucerne outnumber those to Venice, Rome, Barcelona and Paris - all much larger cities with significantly greater supporting infrastructure (2).

Suffice to say, while I have some guilt about my role in this problem, I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to this magical city on the water!

Ps - I’m sorry that I haven’t replied to comments this week - I promise that I will! It’s been a whirlwind week, and of course, with the multi-day Flickr migration, access has been challenging 😊 It’s great to have the system back up and running!

A shot that didn't made the cut at the time but which has some merits I think, not least because metre gauge trains are now a thing of the past here.

The shot was taken at Ringas Junction, Rajasthan and features NWR liveried Alco YDM4 unit 6637 waiting time with the 6.20am Sikar - Jaipur (train 02088).

It was breakfast time and plenty of passengers were taking advantage of the extended stop to grab a bite to eat at one of the concessions on the platform at right - taking the direct route across the tracks was, and is, pretty normal. A couple of folk have spotted me too, including the driver, (I was hardly incognito in a white sun-hat) and are quite happy to get themselves in the shot.

Semaphores were still in use and these were controlled by two signal boxes, one at each end of the station. This side of the station was still exclusively metre gauge but, out of sight on the right, broad gauge track had already been laid and BG trains were running.

So far as I can make out the line from here to Sikar has now been converted to BG and is operational; the line to Jaipur however is still being converted and, presumably, will be operational soon.

It's not very difficult to come up with postcard images in Prague. The views are literally on every step. I took this one from the castle walls of Vysehrad, across the river, just as the dusk started to settle in over this beautiful city.

An idyllic still morning on Rydal Water in Springtime.

The sunrise colours were very muted this morning but stil really pleasant, they really didn't last long at all, I've shot this location a good few times now and you can see the sky changing very clearly to your left as you face this way down the lake, might be something, might be nothing, you never know what you are going to get... one thing that doesn't change though is being stood in the lake with your wellies on at dawn as the sun comes up is always magical regardless of what image you get, (or don't).

The water was perfectly still this morning so I had to be the same stood in the water so as not to cause any ripples on the surface, falling in never helps either, I've got form for such things....thankfully that didn't happen on this trip...

This was the first image taken from a day of chasing the light on Exmoor this Autumn. Many bows, plus the odd soaking and a walk thrown in for good measure. Wishing everyone a top week :-)
