Note, the letter box was manufactured for the Post Office by Smith & Hawkes

The VR inscription on this post box denotes that it was manufactured during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837 - 1901).

There is a small metal plaque at the top stating that it was installed at nearby Sarratt Vale in 1907 before being relocated here.

 

So it may have been somewhere else first, but quite likely that it was held by the GPO for a few years before being installed.

General Post Office, Sheffield. The building was built in 1910, as main sorting and delivery office. It has been pretty stripped, and, as the building has been empty since 1999, then in many places the paint is peeling, wires have been pulled out and damp has come in. Many of the rooms are empty. The beautiful spiral staircase at the front of the building is one of my favourite staircases in the world I think.
