Galápagos tortoises possess two main shell forms that correlate with the biogeographic history of the species group. They exhibit a spectrum of carapace morphology ranging from "saddleback" (denoting upward arching of the front edge of the shell resembling a saddle) to "domed" (denoting a rounded convex surface resembling a dome). When a saddleback tortoise withdraws its head and forelimbs into its shell, a large unprotected gap remains over the neck, evidence of the lack of predation during the evolution of this structure.
Larger islands with humid highlands over 800 m (2,600 ft) in elevation, such as Santa Cruz, have abundant vegetation near the ground. Tortoises native to these environments tend to have domed shells and are larger, with shorter necks and limbs.
Saddleback tortoises originate from small islands less than 500 m (1,600 ft) in elevation with dry habitats (e.g. Española and Pinzón) that are more limited in food and other resources.
Two lineages of Galápagos tortoises possess the Island of Santa Cruz and when observed it is concluded that despite the shared similarities of growth patterns and morphological changes observed during growth, the two lineages and two sexes can be distinguished on the basis of distinct carapace features. Lineages differ by the shape of the vertebral and pleural scutes. Females have a more elongated and wider carapace shape than males.
Carapace shape changes with growth, with vertebral scutes becoming narrower and pleural scutes becoming larger during late ontogeny.
The Regal Ring-necked Snake (Diadophis punctatus regalis) is full of unique behaviors from curling its tail into a shield shape, flipping onto its back and displaying its colorful underside, all the way to.... Drooling! It's not well understood why they possess this behavior, and no one really knows if the "drool" contains any toxins, but it is by far one of the strangest occurrences to witness! Pour y entrer ou en sortir, il n'existe que deux voies : celle des airs et celle des sentiers de randonnée.
En effet, la difficulté de son accès, due à son relief tourmenté et chaotique, empêche la route de pénétrer au cœur de ce sanctuaire naturel. Le cirque est un immense chaudron au fond irrégulier, parsemé ici et là de nombreux îlets où la vie, au fur et à mesure du temps s'est fixée.

The Chestnut-bellied Euphonia forms a superspecies with the Golden-sided Euphonia; both species possess golden feather tufts on their shoulders and are distinguished by the belly color, which is black in Golden-sided. As the name implies, euphonias are good singers. Chestnut-bellied Euphonia is quite an exception to the name, since its vocal repertoire seems to be largely made up by a series of harsh notes resembling the calls of allied species. The bulk of its distribution is encompassed by the southern portion of the Atlantic Forest in Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil. It is not known to migrate and is commonly encountered in mixed species flocks together with Green-throated, Golden-rumped, Violaceus, and Purple-throated Euphonias.

For Macro Mondays theme 'Powder'.
The snail is sitting on an ornate antique powder compact that was passed to me by my mother. I have no idea how old or valuable it might be - but it has clearly had a fair bit of use judging from the worn patches on the powder puff. There is even a tiny beveled mirror inside the lid, but it is badly pitted with age.
The euphanism 'to powder one's nose' likely dates from the early 20th century and was used by females when they wanted a polite expression to excuse themselves to go to the toilet.
No snails were harmed in the making of this photograph.

Le château a été construit, probablement en 1230, sur l’emplacement d’un château plus ancien dont il ne reste rien. Il faisait partie d’un ensemble fortifié qui englobait le village.
À l’origine, c’est une salle qui constitue le donjon dont les murs épais reposent sur une salle voûtée. Un second corps de bâtiment vient s’ajouter ensuite : le rez-de-chaussée, traditionnellement, ne présente aucune ouverture et on accède au château par une porte haute et un escalier amovible. Le dernier étage est percé de mirandes reliées par un chemin de ronde. Des meurtrières sont les seules ouvertures.
Au xviie siècle, on construit le corps occidental et on réalise les aménagements intérieurs, des escaliers, des pièces d’habitation. Les aménagements se poursuivent au siècle suivant.
Le château fut une possession des vicomtes de Lomagne. En 1285, il passe par donation d’Othon, vicomte de Lomagne et d’Auvillar, dans les mains de Sanche Garcie de Manas (ou Raymond Sans de Manas). Les vicomtes de Lomagne se placent du côté des Anglais dans les conflits incessants qui opposent ceux-ci aux Français, espérant ainsi voir préserver leur indépendance vis-à-vis du pouvoir royal français.
Le château est racheté en 1651 par Alexandre de Larroquan qui fait édifier le massif occidental, puis c’est son frère, Jacques de Larroquan, qui en prend possession. Maréchal de camp et armes du roi, il bénéficie de sa confiance comme de celle de Richelieu, et c’est sans doute grâce à cela que le château d’Avezan n’est pas démantelé comme tant d’autres à cette époque.
Au xviiie siècle, le château passe successivement aux mains de plusieurs familles qui s’en désintéressent et le laissent à l’abandon. À la Révolution, il est racheté par des métayers puis abandonné.
En 1972 Patrice Cournot entreprend sa restauration.
Le château a été inscrit au titre des monuments historiques en 1984.
C’est une ancienne possession des vicomtes de Lomagne, donnée en fief à Sanche-Garcie de Manas en 1285. Le château fut construit aux 13e et 14e siècles. Remanié au 15e ou 16e siècle (cheminées, fenêtres), il reçoit l’adjonction d' un escalier et de deux tours en façade ouest à la fin du 17e siècle.

In questa foto del 2018 un manichino è in bilico su un precario sostegno arrugginito. L'ho scelto per parlare di Alcmane il lirico della seconda metà del VII secolo a.C. che per primo, dopo il buio dei secoli del medioevo ellenico, descrive un paesaggio notturno senza presenze umane. Il componimento oltre che per la sua bellezza è importante perché testimonia una coscienza consapevole di ciò che lo circonda; il poeta si mette in secondo piano, anzi si nasconde, per far parlare la natura, si fa interprete delle innumerevoli voci del mondo animato e inanimato che ha bisogno di essere guardato, osservato e cantato. Chi prima di lui era stato capace di tanta attenzione? Ne abbiamo alcune tracce nella preistoria dove, certamente per necessità di sopravvivenza, erano gli animali ad essere predominanti nella psiche umana, come dimostrano numerosi graffiti nelle grotte europee o all'aperto come nelle incisioni della val Camonica.
Nei dipinti preistorici, risalenti per lo più tra i dieci e i ventimila anni fa, gli animali sono protagonisti e rappresentati con suprema abilità tecnica, mentre l'uomo è ritratto raramente e con stile semplificato, geometrico. Famoso è il dipinto nel pozzo di Lascaux, nelle omonime grotte, dove un bisonte emerge dal muro con grande realismo, mentre lo schizzo dell'uomo disteso esanime al suolo è assimilabile al disegno di un bambino di cinque anni.
Dunque l'uomo preistorico osservava gli esseri viventi con grande acume ed era anche in possesso di una tecnica raffinata per rappresentarli, ma non aveva ancora coscienza ben definita di sé.
Tra il quinto e il quarto millennio prima di Cristo, con l'avvento delle grandi civiltà gli uomini prendono sempre più nota delle proprie caratteristiche, sia esse fisiche che mentali e morali alleandosi con gli animali e identificandosi con essi per acquisire potenza, basti pensare al variegato pantheon degli Egizi dove troviamo dèi e faraoni in forma umana e animale insieme, oppure alle sacre porte delle città mesopotamiche o ittite tutte sorvegliate da animali mitici. Parallelamente prosegue la rappresentazione di figure umane sia leggendarie che storiche mentre la natura assume un carattere secondario, anche se gli Egizi, e i minoici a Creta, mantennero sempre grande ammirazione e venerazione per le forme animali, vegetali, minerali. Nel primo millennio avanti Cristo a Cnosso, nell'isola di Creta, ma scoperte soltanto da poco più di un secolo, furono realizzate vere e proprie “fotografie” delle cerimonie di iniziazioni di giovani, maschi e femmine che facevano acrobazie e volteggi sopra giganteschi tori; nel palazzo di Cnosso, che l'archeologo Evans identificò con quello del re Minosse, furono trovate statuette di una dea che teneva in mano dei serpenti, furono trovate brocche con polpi dipinti e avvinghiati intorno alle rotondità del vaso in maniera così realistica da sembrare veri.
Poi il lungo medioevo ellenico, il silenzio, il buio, le distruzioni, forse le invasioni, la perdita dell'alfabeto, ma non della memoria che di aedo in aedo riuscì a mantenere viva la grande storia omerica che ha formato la civiltà occidentale. Enea, progenitore di Roma, è un profugo troiano cantato da Virgilio e per quanto questa storia sia frutto di una fervida immaginazione, purtuttavia i personaggi descritti da questi poemi hanno contribuito a formare generazioni e generazioni di studenti.
Leggere il notturno di Alcmane è stata una rivelazione. Improvvisamente un uomo solo, nel VII secolo prima di Cristo (quando Roma era ancora tra mito e protostoria) colmo di religioso silenzio, dimentica se stesso, si mette in ascolto e si immedesima con la natura tutta, aprendo anche i nostri occhi all'osservazione sacrale di tutto ciò che sta immobile e immerso nel sonno.
“Dormono le cime dei monti e le gole,
i picchi e i dirupi,
e le famiglie di animali, quanti nutre la nera terra,
e le fiere abitatrici dei monti e la stirpe delle api
e i mostri negli abissi del mare purpureo;
dormono le schiere degli uccelli dalle larghe ali.”
Non si sa niente di Alcmane, si sa solo che è vissuto a Sparta, che probabilmente era uno schiavo proveniente da Sardi, capitale della Lidia, una regione dell'Asia Minore a est delle coste della Ionia. Tra l'altro Erodoto, anche se smentito da storici più tardi e, pare, da recenti indagini sul Dna delle popolazioni interessate, ipotizza che proprio dalla Lidia fossero venuti gli Etruschi fino in Italia guidati dal principe Tirreno.
Di Alcmane inventore della lirica corale, rimangono un centinaio di frammenti di cui questo è il più famoso perché per la prima volta la natura è protagonista assoluta.
Per lunghissimi secoli il paesaggio è stato solo lo sfondo dove si muovevano quegli esseri presuntuosi che nel tempo avevano cominciato a specchiarsi e a trovarsi tanto belli da non saper più vedere che erano solo una piccolissima parte, un frammento del tutto.
Dovremo aspettare circa duemila anni e arrivare al tardo Rinascimento per vedere rappresentata la natura in tutta la sua maestà, senza esseri umani a disturbarla.

Benedict reminds us that our health and wellbeing lie in recognition of the fact that none of us can possess infinite resource or time, and so will always need the unexpected stranger to supplement who and what we are. How do we inculcate in law and politics something of that recognition that otherness is not a matter for panic or despair; that the challenge or difficulty of the stranger, the cultural other, the sexual other, the vaguely threatening foreigner at our doors in popular mythology, is potentially gift? How do we inculcate a political morality which recognizes that these people are not going away, and that therefore our task is not to pretend that they can be made to but to work at how we actually engage in transforming our relations with them? That doesn’t of course immediately produce a magical solution, but it flags up the danger of yielding to the temptation of thinking that we can somehow will the stranger into oblivion.

Cyanophrys longula (Mountain Greenstreak)
There are 17 Cyanophrys species, found variously from Mexico to Paraguay. All have metallic green undersides, marked with a row of white dots on the hindwing. All species possess a filamentous tail, but this is usually lost on examples that have been flying for more than a couple of days.
Cyanophrys longula is distributed from Mexico to Colombia and Venezuela.
This butterfly is found in cloudforest habitats at elevations between about 1400-2400m.

Situata all'imbocco della Val Trebbia, dopo la fondazione della prima colonia romana nell'Italia settentrionale “Placentia”, (l'attuale Piacenza) distante solo 16 km, ebbe nei secoli un'importanza strategica per le spedizioni militari ed i commerci tra Pianura Padana e il porto di Genova. Per questo venne eretta una torre di guardia sulla riva più alta del fiume, dalla cui definizione, “Ripa Alta”, la frazione prende il nome. Comprende il borgo medievale costituito da un complesso fortificato con l'imponente castello, la cui prima edificazione risale all'XI secolo.
La prima testimonianza scritta sul castello è un atto di acquisto risalente al 1025. Nel 1048 l'imperatore Enrico II lo dona al monastero di San Savino di Piacenza. Nel XII secolo era sotto giurisdizione dei Malaspina-Cybo, che dominavano i territori dalla Lunigiana fino alla valle Staffora e nel 1255 Oberto Pallavicino, podestà di Piacenza, ordinò la distruzione di questo e degli altri presidi dei Malaspina. Nel primo decennio del XIV secolo i Ripalta lo cedettero a Obizzo Landi e da allora fino a oggi, tranne brevi interruzioni, rimase possesso della famiglia Landi. Tra il XV e il XVIII secolo i Landi trasformarono il castello in una sontuosa residenza.
Come ogni castello degno di questo nome anche Rivalta ha il suo fantasma, anzi ne ha due. Uno è quello di Pietro Zanardi Landi, assassinato per rivalità legate all'eredità, che sembra abbia perseguitato gli eredi fraudolenti fino al 1890 e sia tornato quando un ignaro erede sbagliato si è fermato nel castello. L'altro è il fantasma del cuoco Giuseppe, ucciso nel settecento per vendetta dal maggiordomo a cui aveva insidiato la moglie, si manifesta spegnendo le luci e spostando gli oggetti.
Oggi il castello fa parte del circuito Associazione dei Castelli del Ducato di Parma, Piacenza e Pontremoli ed è visitabile da febbraio a novembre nei giorni festivi e in altre date su prenotazione. Il borgo ospita abitazioni private, ristoranti e taverne.

The Yueh Hai Ching Temple in Singapore, built in 1826 and renovated in 1855, is a great example of southern Chinese temple architecture, specifically in the Teochew architectural style from the Qing Dynasty. It is a Taoist temple.
The current structure of this shrine dates back to 1850 and then was substantially renovated in 1895. Since then, it has undergone several restorations.
The temple was designated as a National Monument of Singapore in 1996. Its restoration and conservation in 2011 earned the Award of Merit at the 2014 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards.
The courtyard of Yueh Hai Ching Temple, enclosed by surrounding walls and buildings, possesses a sense of introspection.
Its seclusion from the outside world creates a tranquil, self-contained space, as a serene retreat within the temple grounds.
