a series I did for my Problem Solving Final that deals with my daily effort to stay positive about my body.

Still pursuing SLOW PHOTOGRAPHY with my 4x5 cameras whenever I can... This is a test shot of Leciel, a wonderful model I had the pleasure to work with last week. Shot on Fuji 100c instant film with an 80 years old camera and lens, I intentionally slightly underexposed the POSITIVE (on the left) in order to get my intended grungy look in the NEGATIVE by hand washing it in bleach and other secret and highly poisonous concoctions....

Accidental Direct Positive from Kodak 2383. I shot some 2383 and tried to push it to ISO 12 (from 1.5). Shot it as 12 and developed it as B&W hoping that might do the trick. I push processed in H&W Control 1:14, since that is a very active developer. 16 minutes development (instead of 12) 100 degrees F instead of 68 F and continuous agitation. stopped and fixed at 100F as well. Fixed with Ilford hypam 1:4. Strangely some of the frames developed completely positive, and some were positive foreground with negative whites and lights. You can see here some of the mix. Not a lot of depth or contrast which could just be the underexposure (3 stops). Took me a few minutes to realize what was going on,. Definitely worth experimenting some more. Again these are direct positive, there was no reversal here and no partial editing. You can see here where I flipped / inverted entire pictures which was cool and weird no matter how you did it. I think what happened is a combination of active developer, the very thin emulsion which is not very light sensitive - relatively, and then the underexposure. Anyway have fun with these and try it yourself. I want to do this with 16mm movie and see what comes of it.

Do you usually start new projects in a whirl of positivity only to be confounded mere moments later by the nagging ache of negativity?

Have you ever made yourself smaller to make someone else more comfortable? It's not your job to do that, or to take on their burdens. You can be the true you, and let it be a positive example for others who have trouble being their true selves. 🌞

I love shooting new, unusual film stocks. One of the more unusual stocks that I hand-roll for our Film Photography Project on-line store is a scientific lab film by Svema. We call this low contrast, low ISO film "BW Super Positive" because the film produces a black and white positive when processed using normal BW chemistry.

A few days ago, I decided to give in to my curiosity about the lab results my super-awesome1 rheumatologist ordered when I went in for my sweat hiatus.2 The checkout slip had my login details for that office’s EMR on it, so I went to check it out.

Aside from finding out how truly abysmal the office’s record keeping skills are—my medicine, surgery, & allergy lists were inaccurate, he claimed he prescribed my Effexor, he was consulting with a doctor I haven’t seen in 6-7 years about my case, he had 4 visits total listed, even though there have been at least 12-16 visits, old lab reports were missing, old prescription data from drugs he’d prescribed was missing—I found out that he had a “plan of care” that revolved around telling me how fat I am3 and how I need to start exercising.4 I also found out that he thinks I’ve been on my Flexeril too long. I’m fairly certain that I pointed that little issue out about two or three years ago when I asked him to try something else because the Flexeril had become ineffective. But hey, it’s just my body, what do I know? I would claim that I felt incredulous,5 but I can’t fake my disbelief over his ridiculous & somewhat terrifying antics. Seven years of this same old bullshit just wears a girl out.6

But this isn’t supposed to be about his incompetence. This is supposed to be about lab results. Tell me what your first reaction would be to these results.

Notice anything odd about them?

There are no units of measure listed on the ANA test. And the way the “normal range” section is phrased sounds like anything above 120 or below 100 is bad. Think again.

I had to search for an explanation of these results harder than a Disney prince has to search a magical forest for a barely legal future wife to take home to his dysfunctional family.

And I found one.

Sort of.

Apparently, the range should read like this:

Negative: Below 100

Equivocal: 100-120

Positive: Above 120

So I tested positive for the ANA Qualitative Test, the SSA (Ro) antibodies test, and the Scl-70 test. That could indicate: Lupus, Sjögren’s, Scleroderma, MCTD, UCTD, etc. It could also be a fluke because truly healthy people can have positive readings on these tests, and people diagnosed with them can have negative ones. So I’m not worrying too much about that.

I’m a bit more concerned with my CBC because my platelet volume was almost too low, while my platelet count was close to the upper limit. Combine that with an increase in red blood cells and you’ve got a warning that the anemia isn’t far from striking. I guess that explains why I’ve felt more down & out, and why my body has gone into the “I’m dying” feeling that accompanies the anemia. I’m going to get the rheumatologist to forward that part of the labs to my hematologist, to make sure waiting to the end of the year for my tests + infusions is still safe.

I really dread the infusions, but they’re part of my life now. I will just have to deal.

at forgetting ↩

The thing that’s potentially fatal, but that my rheumatologist is all blasé about. Who needs sweaty pits and tits in 90-100°F humid, summertime-in-Alabama weather? Oh, right, everyone. ↩

16 points of a 23 point list ↩

Because telling a doctor that you’re concerned that a 45-minute, 1.8 mile walk in 85°F+ didn’t cause you to sweat and that the overheating was limiting your exercise choices doesn’t get the message across that you’re actually exercising. ↩

Not a Disney movie title adjective, though it could be. ↩

Taken 15 meters off the ground for a slight elevation angle. The Reactor is a large complexed geometric structure made of endless triangles. From the ground it looks like a crown or a pomograne, but from its center it forms the sacred geometrical shape of the Merkaba.

Its purpose is to remind us that acts of kindness reward the giver, the receiver and the witness of the good acts, with a boost of oxytocin, producing good feeling to all and taking nothing in return. Therefore creating energy — a Reactor.

The kindness and love that I experience in Second Life far out weighs the negative drama that sometimes occurs between avies. We are people behind our artfully designed avatars. And with this community, sometimes, people have conflicts that can be overwhelming.

I don't like to feel rage for anyone or any circumstance, so I search for beautiful places to meditate and to focus once again on the positive energy in this place.

Sometimes, I find it in music and other times I find it in a singular vision or an artist. This past week, I needed to find spiritual nourishment and Second Life did not disappoint me.

I arrived at LA 2019 City with a haphazard LM that didn't arrive at the destination of the club. Several of us were left standing wondering what had gone wrong. I saw Billynom8 and he manged to fly up to the 2,351 meter mark. He so graciously tp'ed me to the party. That was my first contact with pure kindness. Thank you Billy!

DJ Voyager Xue was pounding the hardcore. Deep inside me, I let the music just take over to numb the negative away. I must come back to this place, the club was very cool.

Xavier donned his enormous white wings and enveloped me in his angelic protection. We had to go to Organica. One of the most spiritual musical places full of loving people in SL. DJ Qee was there and we just became lost in the beautiful sounds of psy and goa.

Montana sent us a tp to hear Joaquin Gustav, a live musician who plays flamenco guitar. Next to the ocean, Sasi's club presents a beautiful and casual setting for Joaquin's music. Unpretentious, his flamenco music captures your spirit and brings you to exotic places far away. We danced in each others arms on his musical notes.

But, my soul and spirit needed more. Both Xavier and I come from Catholic backgrounds. I asked him if he would go to church with me. So off we went in search of beautiful churches. I especially love stain glass windows and I am enchanted by religious art.

We found Walsingham Church with its simple interiors, St Paul and its large stained glass windows, the sweet gilt display of the blessed child at St George and the wonderous Basilica Cardinale. Basilica was stunning with stain glass, ornate alter and prayer pews for the patrons. I loved it here and we stayed for about an hour.

I felt refreshed. And I wanted to see art. Cherry had sent a tp to Galerie Francane, so I arrived ready. Colorful psy art and photographs lined the walls, but I was enchanted with the waterfall and river sculpture. Very spiritual with a reverence for nature and water. I loved it.

Evening came and Xavier and I headed for the special Sunday evening ballroom dancing at Phantom Rose Opera House. We danced among patrons enjoying several operatic selections. The music was divine. And we ended up almost being the last ones to leave.

Next stop in our ballroom attire was Bella Vida Velvet Jazz Lounge. I love this place for the world music it always plays. DJ Jen Noel plays here frequently as well as DJ Angelsmoon. Angelsmoon was spinning tonight with his special mixes of Moroccan, Indian and electronica fusion. I was truly in heaven at this point with his world music. I simply love his sound.

We ended out evening at Garden of Dreams locked in an embrace by the river. This is a very spiritual place with a reverence for all things natural. A glorious river flows through the sim with each area set aside for meditation and reflection. We have been here several times just to renew ourselves and our commitment to each other.

Second Life is truely a blessed place full of life's hardships and rewards. I am reminded that this small world is definitely a reflection of the larger one we live in... and I appreciate the kindness and beauty here very much.
