This is the result of our recent SILVER THAW (freezing rain). The last silver thaw was exactly 50 years ago! I was 20 years old, at that time, travelling in New Zealand. I'm all for positive thinking but I might not see the next silver thaw.
I took this photo in the "shooting tent" that my son gave me for Christmas a few years ago. I haven't spent a lot of time with the accessory, so I took the opportunity to experiment.
This is Janice's "gratitude jar." I used only a few stones for the photo; the saucer usually has a bigger supply. When something comes to mind for which Janice is grateful, she moves one stone from the saucer to the jar.
The visual cue helps her to adopt a more grateful way of thinking.
Today the actual time of sunset was going to be 4.18pm - just over an hour later than on the shortest day!
Another significant factor was knowing that yesterday we had lived through the ten darkest weeks between last year's Midsummer's Day and this year's! So every reason to begin looking forward to Summer 2016 together with its very long hours of daylight on Mid-Summer evenings in the Orkney Islands!!

So many people are happy to experience the start of a new year, because they saw 2016 as a year of misfortune, and even disaster. My friend, Jane, gave me the idea to pause on New Year's Day, and create a photographic representation of good things that happened last year. "What were the highlights?" she asked.
So, I created a triptych. On the left is my son, Evan, and his fiance, Yula. They became engaged in 2016! And, we love Yula. On with the wedding!
Last summer, we also moved out of Philadelphia and into a more rural area. Here's a shot of the Philadelphia Museum of Art -- a positive thing about the city -- but we're glad to be at arm's distance.
On the right is our grandson, Flynn, born in January, 2016. It's hard to believe he's about to celebrate his first birthday.
Good things abound, despite the bad. We just need to remember them. Thanks, Jane!
