Oil and gas exports have since the 1990's brought some prosperity to Papua New Guinea. This is a view of some houses on stilts over water in the capital of Port Moresby.
Some time ago in response to comments on another image, I flagged the future posting of a relevant archival snake picture. Well here it is - taken over 40 years back on a rainforest track near Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea. The python is quite harmless; Mrs Rod was just providing scale. The machete was used only to improve trail access in pinch points; the handspear was in hope of finding some edible tucker in the river we were heading towards. A wonderful jungle encounter. Ignore EXIF - image rephotographed from a faded colour print.

Dancer - traditional head dress - Port Moresby - Papua New Guinea: During a sing-sing, people from different tribes arrive to show and share their distinct culture, dance and music. The aim of these gatherings is to peacefully share traditions. Villagers paint and decorate themselves for sing-sings. Tribal violence and fights are endemic in the country. If this trend continues, Papua New Guinea faces bourgeoning conflicts that could reverse many of the development achievements made over the last few decades and seriously increase poverty and depravation.
The man who gave me a chance and introduced to me the idea of brothas being born in different bodies. No matter white, black, yellow or green we all are same holding on earths dream. My second night in PNG after having no idea where to sleep and local people strongly suggesting against sleeping outside as a white boy with a backpack. With a fair amount of common sense and a basic understanding of suburbs still a possibility, even more so the further you get away from larger cities where the western influence creates the tension of possibilities. He has a tattoo on his back that was done in prison by cutting the skin with a razor blade and melting tire rubber into the wound, considering this procedure quiet sharp but it hurts he said. His name is Daniel and he is volunteering at a church.

August 3, 1942: After hammering Port Moresby for two days, Japanese bombers finally sank this Australian transport which sends up a cloud of smoke. She drifted onto a reef and heeled over. Flaming oil can be seen at left. The men in a small boat, foreground, are looking for victims. (AP Photo)
I can't recall where I spotted this tragic picture but I think that it is in the public domain by time alone. If I am in error please advise and i will delete or credit.

Exploring the wall, Horseshoe Reef, Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. Diving retrospective.
Nikonos II + UW-NIKKOR 15mm f2.8 (rephotographed from a transparency)
Note: While I did take the black and white image . . . It was of a framed photo in the hotel I stayed at, from March to November 2013.
Truthfully, I never felt 100% safe while in Port Moresby. That is why I did not bring my Nikon professional cameras and lenses with me. I bought the Fujifilm X100 black Limited Edition, because it was small almost fit in a pocket and not so obvious. The truly stupid engineering design, as side from its menu system, is the lens filter that comes with the kit must be removed to install the lens cap or lens hood. Obviously, the engineers never spent any time at Nikon.
One day, there was machinegun fire, in the street below the hotel . . . And, I believe someone robbed a bank. They ran over a pedestrian and killed the person, in front of the hotel, as they made their getaway.
Many men chewed betel nut, the seed of the Areca palm, common across Asia and the Pacific. In Papua New Guinea, it is known as "buai". It is consumed with a mustard stick dipped in slaked lime powder. Chewed then spat out, it creates a sense of euphoria and alertness. It makes the person's mouth blood red and they spit this out everywhere.
One day while walking down at the beach to take photos, one of these crazed individuals insisted I take his photo, grabbed me in an embrace and lifted me up. So, I took his photo.
On another occasion, I was walking along this trail to get away from the hotel, get some exercise, and take some photos. This menacing group of boys began following me. Again, they wanted me to take their photo. I agreed and they scrambled up into the tree.
