In Cabo Verbe, the celebrations of World Water Day 2015 were mainly targeting school students. The goal was to raise awareness on water conservation issues.
The small Portuguese-speaking island has long faced extreme water shortages. With less than 50mm of rainfall a year and one of the lowest groundwater tables on the continent, the lack of water caused more than 200,000 deaths in the 20th century and forced many to emigrate.
The country is forced to import almost 82 percent of its food due to lack of water, the United Nations reports.

The laboratory in Colonato has been equipped to support the monitoring of the quality of treated wastewater. The ministry decided to undertake a strategic assessment and evaluation on the parameters to be monitored in Praia and the ones to be monitored in Tarrafal. The assessment will guide how this water quality monitoring system will be integrated into the monitoring system developed at national level.

UNEP, through the Global Wastewater Initiative and the IWRM SIDS AIO project, will work with FAO to upscale efforts in promoting wastewater reuse for reforestation and agriculture in the Island of Santiago and Sao Vicente, Cabo Verde. To that effect a joint mission was organised from 24 to 29 April 2016. The objective of the meeting was to:
- Formulate UNEP-FAO Cabo Verde project document on wastewater reuse.
- Provide UNEP/GPA/IWRM AIO SIDS inputs to the meeting following up with key national intervening in the water and agriculture sector.

The demonstration project has provided learning opportunities for other national programmes. Two existing projects on wastewater reuse are currently led by the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture and will build up/complement the actions carried out under this demonstration project in the coming years.
The national level Adaptares project will look at raising awareness on the safety of eating agricultural products grown with treated wastewater. A special focus will be put on Tarrafal to complement the activities implemented by the IWRM demonstration project.
The FAO fertigation project will build up on the demonstration project in Tarrafal and replicate it in Sao Vicente. In partnership with FAO and UN Environment, a national capacity building workshop on “Investing in wastewater management and reuse” was also organised under the component 4 of the IWRM AIO SIDS project.
This picture was taken during a joint FAO, UN Environment, UNDP and UNOPS mission that was organised from 24 to 29 April 2016 to coordinate and upscale the demonstration project efforts.

In Taraffal, to IWRM demonstration project is expected to reduce pressures on the environment both by the decrease of water abstraction for irrigation and by the decrease of wastewater discharge in the nearby sea.
The decrease of water abstraction, coupled with the anti-erosion measures put in place should insure an improvement of the soils in the Colonato area, as well as a decrease in salt water intrusion in the groundwater.
The new connections to the sewerage system will significantly improve the functioning of the WWTP and improve the basic sanitation in Tarrafal, it will also improve the livelihood of local farmer by providing a cheaper water source for irrigation and more arable land.
Finally, the project increased awareness among residents of the efficient use of water and provided a platform for dialogue between local stakeholders, farmers associations, local authorities, private sector and the national government.

At the level of gender engagement and improvements, it is the women who are mostly working the land in Cape Verde. In that sense, any improvements to land practices and agriculture will be to their benefit, especially if lands can be made more productive.
In this context, the IWRM demonstration project put a special focus on training women farmers to tree planting and measures to prevent coastal erosion and saltwater intrusion into the aquifer. The 4000 trees planted so far are forming a living barrier against erosion, reducing saltwater intrusion. The activity has led to an improvement of the soils in the Colonato area, to the diversification of crops and to the generation of extra revenues from fruit trees.
