Moorea is een Frans Polynesisch eiland, behorende tot de Genootschapseilanden in de Stille Oceaan. Het ligt slechts 17 km ten westen van Tahiti. Het is een echte huwelijksreisbestemming, maar als bezoeker moet je er wel rekening mee houden dat het er erg duur is. De naam Moorea betekent "gele hagedis".

Moʻorea is a high island in French Polynesia, part of the Society Islands, 17 km northwest of Tahiti.

Because of its stunning scenery and accessibility to Pape'ete, Moʻorea is visited by many western tourists who travel to French Polynesia. Especially popular as a honeymoon destination, Moʻorea can often be seen in advertisements in American wedding magazines. Arthur Frommer declared in Frommer's travel guide that he considered it the most beautiful island in the world.

From above, the shape of the island vaguely resembles a heart, with its two nearly symmetrical bays opening to the north side of the island: Cook's Bay and ʻŌpūnohu Bay.

Ia Orana! I took my first real vacation in 3 years, deciding to turn 50 in beautiful Tahiti. I stayed in Papeete on the island of Tahiti, but also spent my birthday in an over-water bungalow in Huahine, and also spent a day on Moorea. Thanks to my host family (maruuru!), I got to visit many cultural and natural sights, tried a lot of native food, and despite spending the week sweating, had a wonderful time, living as both a tourist and native.

French Polynesia, an overseas collectivity of France, comprises more than 100 islands in the South Pacific, stretching for more than 2,000km. Divided into the Austral, Gambier, Marquesas, Society and Tuamotu archipelagos, they're known for their coral-fringed lagoons and over-the-water bungalow hotels. Island features include white- and black-sand beaches, mountains, rugged backcountry and towering waterfalls.

Tahiti is the largest island in the Windward group of French Polynesia. The island is located in the archipelago of the Society Islands in the central Southern Pacific Ocean, and is divided into two parts: the bigger, northwestern part, Tahiti Nui, and the smaller, southeastern part, Tahiti Iti. The island was formed from volcanic activity and is high and mountainous with surrounding coral reefs. The population is 189,517 inhabitants (2017 census), making it the most populous island of French Polynesia and accounting for 68.7% of its total population.

Most of the islands in the South Pacific had large stone idols (when they're tiny, they're called tikis). Usually, they have a particularly prominent feature-- like a weiner or a tongue. These two had neither! Poor idols!
