Below is a quote from Wikipedia:

"...Back to the Roots is a 1971 double album by John Mayall released on Polydor. Recording sessions took place both in California and London where Mayall invited some former members of his band, notably guitarists Eric Clapton and Mick Taylor.

At the end of the 1980s Mayall remixed some tracks and issued them along with some of the older material as Archives to Eighties. An expanded two-CD version of Back to the Roots now includes both the original and later remixed versions of the tracks..."

Before and After Science is the fifth studio album by British musician Brian Eno. Produced by Eno and Rhett Davies, it was originally released by Polydor Records in December 1977. The album marks Eno's last foray into rock music for the 1970s as a solo artist, with all his remaining albums of the decade showcasing more of Eno's avant-garde and ambient music, which was hinted at on the second half of Before and After Science. Critical response to the album has remained positive, with several critics calling it one of Eno's best works.

On a world without sound

We knit a web to catch one tiny fly

For our world without sound

We sleep in the mornings

We dream of a ship that sails away

A thousand miles away"

Oxygène, recorded by French musician Jean-Michel Jarre, was released in France in 1976. It was later released in the UK the following year via Polydor, and that is the copy I still have. The cover artwork by Michel Granger makes for an interesting squared circle.

Macro Monday: #Hobby

A hobby most of us enjoy: listening to music. As Nietzsche already said: "Without music, life would be a mistake." While this is a 45 rpm Beatles single (a very early recording of "Skinny Minnie" / "My Bonnie" with Tony Sheridan, 1962, but published on Polydor as "late" as 1968; the sleeve shows The Beatles very young, all clad in leather like rockers, probably taken in the days when they regularly played at the Cavern Club in Hamburg) which I got when I was a kid (the single, I mean), I thought that this actually looks like the cover of a ca. 1978 LP, the debut of, let's say, the then upcoming and most promising, if not to say hot Punk-Prog Band Poly d'Or: "A Case of the Mondays". An elaborate, most intricate, deeply philosophical (in a Punk-Prog way) concept album / Punk opera about a guy called Sir Bob who wakes up one Monday in a shrinking world, and... Do you really want to know how the story goes on? No, of course not, because you all know it, and experience it every week. Groundhog Monday :-) (And please note, I didn't mean to include the sad story that inspired the real life Sir Bob [Geldof] to write his band's greatest hit; this is all about MMs and fun.)

Hoffentlich.)

My brother bought me this for my birthday when it was first released and I've recently purchased this vinyl re-issue (great LP btw)

ptheo.blogspot.com/2010/11/blog-post_20.html

Σκέφτηκα…Εδώ υπήρχε μια διαρκής διχόνοια στην ίδια μου την οικογένειά επί πολλά έτη και σε πολλές άλλες οικογένειες που έχω γνωρίσει όλα αυτά τα χρόνια. Πώς, λοιπόν, να καταφέρουν να ενωθούν οι άνθρωποι μιας πόλης, μιας χώρας, όλου του κόσμου;

Αναρωτιέμαι πότε οι άνθρωποι θα καταλάβουμε πως οι θρησκείες, τα έθνη, οι πολιτισμοί, μέσα από τη διαφορετικότητά τους, μπορούν και να μας ενώνουν αντί να μας διχάζουν; Πότε θα δούμε πως μοιάζουμε μεταξύ μας πολύ περισσότερο απ’ ότι νομίζαμε. Πότε θα ενωθούμε ώστε να αλλάξει ετούτος ο κόσμος; Πόσοι Λεβέντες σαν την αδερφή μου πρέπει να θυσιαστούν;

Remembering Vangelis (1943 - 2022) Tribute - Inspirational Music by Daniel Arrhakis (2022)

With the music : Music video by Vangelis performing Chariots Of Fire. (C) 1981 Universal Music International BV / Polydor (UK) Ltd.

youtu.be/8a-HfNE3EIo

Vangelis, the Greek composer and musician of Chariots of Fire, and Blade Runner soundtracks, dies aged 79.

Born Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou in 1943, the young Vangelis developed an early interest in music and experiments with sounds produced by banging pots and pans or fixing nails, glasses and other objects to the strings of his parents' piano.

The success of "Chariots of Fire" overshadowed his other scores, but he wrote the music for a number of major films including "Missing", directed by his compatriot Costa-Gavras, and Ridley Scott's futuristic thriller "Blade Runner".

1492: Conquest of Paradise is a 1992 music score by Vangelis to the film of the same name, a 1992 epic historical drama film directed and produced by Ridley Scott and starring Gérard Depardieu, Armand Assante, and Sigourney Weaver.

It portrays a version of the travels to the New World by the Genoese explorer Christopher Columbus and the effect this had on indigenous peoples.

The film was released to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Columbus' voyage.

More success followed him after the release of the original film score to Alexander, a 2004 film that portrays the life of Alexander the Great. One of the spectacular songs on the soundtrack was “Titans.” This enchanting composition rises above most songs to establish itself as one of Vangelis’ best releases.

And many others ...

This is my tribute to this unique composer and musician that inspired generations ... and made us travel through time and space on an inspiring journey of self-discovery... between the past and the future!

"'Memories of Green' is a slow piano piece against a backdrop of synthesizer noise and the bleeps of a computer game. In later interviews, sound engineer Raphael Preston revealed that he had to play the game without losing for the duration of the piece. It would later appear again on the Blade Runner soundtrack." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/See_You_Later

*****

"The Blade Runner soundtrack by Vangelis is a dark melodic combination of classic composition and futuristic synthesizers (mainly a Yamaha CS-80) which mirrors the film-noir retro-future envisioned by Ridley Scott. Vangelis, fresh from his Academy Award winning score from Chariots of Fire, composed and performed the music on his synthesizers. He also made use of various chimes and the vocals of collaborator Demis Roussos, as well as the haunting sax solo by Dick Morrissey on 'Love Theme.' Ridley Scott also used 'Memories of Green' from Vangelis' 1980 album See You Later (an orchestral version of which Scott would later use in his film Someone To Watch Over Me). Along with Vangelis' compositions and ambient textures, the film's soundscape also prominently features a track by the Japanese group Ensemble Nipponia (Ogi No Mato or 'The Folding Fan as a Target' from the Nonesuch Records release 'Traditional Vocal and Instrumental Music') and a track by harpist Gail Laughton ('Pompeii 76 A.D.' from Laurel Records recently reissued 'Harps of the Ancient Temples').

Despite being well received by fans and critically acclaimed – nominated in 1983 for a BAFTA and Golden Globe as best original score – and the promise of a soundtrack album from Polydor Records in the end titles of the film, the release of the original soundtrack recording was delayed for over a decade. There are three official releases of the music from Blade Runner. In light of the lack of a release of an official score, an orchestral adaptation, recorded by The New American Orchestra, was released in 1982. Some of the film tracks would in 1989 surface on the compilation Themes, but it was not until the 1992 release of the Director's Cut version of the film that a substantial amount of the score would see the light of day on an official release." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blade_Runner_(soundtrack)

After signing a management contract with Owen Husney, Prince and David Rivkin spent the entire winter of 1976-77 at Sound 80. They re-recorded some of the songs Prince had demoed at Moonsound, and they taped some new material here as well.

Prince also guested on sessions with Pepé Willie’s band 94 East and with The Lewis Connection, featuring Sonny Thompson. The 94 East tracks “10:15” and “Fortune Teller” were intended for a Polydor single in 1977 but were eventually released via Pepé’s website in 2002. The 1979 Lewis Connection album (which featured Prince on the track “Got To Be Something Here”) was re-released on LP & CD in 2013.

The recording studio still exists elsewhere in Minneapolis, but this building now houses Orfield Labs, “the quietest place on Earth” (according to Guinness World Records).

German promotion card by Polydor, no. 118, 1979. From left to right: José Hoebee, Patty Brard, and Marga Scheide.

Luv' are a Dutch girl group that scored a string of hit records in Continental Europe (Benelux, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, France, Denmark) as well as South Africa, Rhodesia, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Mexico in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The original members were Patty Brard, José Hoebee and Marga Scheide. The band sold more than seven million records worldwide (singles and albums). Among their greatest hits were: 'U.O.Me (Welcome to Waldolala)', 'You're the Greatest Lover', 'Trojan Horse', 'Casanova' and 'Ooh, Yes I Do'. The formation went through line-up changes and the original singers reunited several times.

In 1976, record producers, Hans van Hemert and Piet Souer, and manager Han Meijer, twenty years before the Spice Girls phenomenon, decided to form a girl group, Luv', inspired by the German disco trio Silver Convention. They had already recorded the music of a self-penned track ('My Man') and were looking for singers. They recruited three women: José Hoebee, born in1954 in Best. She started her career as a semi-professional vocalist in the early 1970s as a member of a folk & country band, 'Young Tradition', with her two sisters. This formation took part in talent shows, changed its name into 'Elongi', and recorded a single produced by Piet Souer who suggested José join Luv'. Marga Scheide, born in 1954 in Amsterdam. She was involved in many beauty pageants and appeared on the covers of various artist hit compilations. Patty Brard, from Sorong in New Guinea, born in 1955, first worked as a secretary in the office of Hans van Hemert who offered her a career in the show business. After the singles 'My Man' (#12 in the Netherlands and a Flemish Top 10 hit) and 'Dream, Dream' (which failed to enter the charts) in 1977, Van Hemert was commissioned by VPRO television to write the theme song for the Wim T. Schippers-written TV series 'Het is weer zo laat!' (also known as Waldolala), a spin-off from 'Van Oekel's Discohoek' (1974). With help from Souer, he composed 'U.O.Me (Welcome to Waldolala)' which was recorded by the girls. Moreover, Luv's appearance performing the song on this TV show during the opening credit was a great publicity stunt. It became an instant hit in the Netherlands and Flanders (Belgium) and was a Top 5 hit in both countries.

Luv' had their international breakthrough with the "You're the Greatest Lover" single in 1978. It sold one million copies. Apart from their homeland, Luv' entered the music charts in Belgium, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and Mexico. Their next single, 'Trojan Horse', was another million-seller, and the follow-up singles 'Casanova' and 'Ooh, Yes I Do' were also successful. Their albums were big selling records, especially With Luv' and Lots of Luv'. In 1978-1979, Luv' was 'Holland's best export act' and received for their entire oeuvre the Export award from Conamus, a foundation dedicated to the promotion and support of Dutch music abroad. Their songs were also popular behind the Iron Curtain, especially in East Germany, Poland, and Hungary. Soon after the release of the 'One More Little Kissie' single, Patty Brard left the band in August 1980. She was replaced by a model and limbo dancer from the Ricardo and The Flames revue, Ria Thielsch born in 1951 in Manokwari, New Guinea. Ria was officially introduced to the public when the 'My Number One' single and the Forever Yours album were released in the fall of 1980. These records sold well in the Netherlands and Belgium. In March 1981, the girls and their team announced their break-up at the time they had planned to promote their recordings in new territories (Japan, Soviet Union....). To the public's great surprise, the group made a farewell performance on 22 July 1981, on the Nederland Muziekland show on Veronica (TV channel) by singing 'Tingalingaling' (which was released as a single). In 1988, the original line-up was reunited for a Dutch TV charity show (Samen) hosted by Mies Bouwman. Marga Scheide (only original member) and two other singers, Diana van Berlo and Michelle Gold recorded as Luv' a single 'Welcome to My Party' which reached the 22nd position on the Dutch charts and the 28th position on the Flemish charts in the autumn of 1989. The formation disbanded in 1992.

In 1993, because of the 1970s revival due to the success of ABBA and Boney M compilations, the original Luv' girls got together. An anthology CD (Luv' Gold) and a medley single (Megamix '93) were released in 1993 and peaked respectively at #14 and #23 on the Dutch charts. The ladies went on tour in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and Denmark. Then their last studio album All You Need Is Luv' (1994) was issued. It failed to enter the hit lists. They performed from time to time and broke up again in 1996. In 2005, Luv' made a surprise performance at the 60th birthday of Hans van Hemert. One year later, a reality TV show about their comeback (Back in Luv) was broadcast on RTL 5 (a Dutch TV channel) and on VTM (a Flemish channel). A DVD (also entitled Back in Luv') and a Box set Completely in Luv' with bonus tracks and remixes came out. On 26, 27, and 28 May 2006, Luv' and Bobby Farrell (of Boney M) were the guest stars during three big shows of De Toppers at the Amsterdam Arena. In the later years, concerts were sporadic mainly due to the fact that Patty Brard was a busy TV personality. In the 2000s and early 2010s, Luv' was one of the few manufactured bands of the disco and dance era to be on stage with the original line-up. They gave their final performance in 2012 in Spaarnwoude at the Dutch Valley Festival. In March 2016, Marga and José announced another comeback of Luv' in De Telegraaf. Patty was not involved in this comeback and was replaced by Ria Thielsch. Luv' intended to go on tour and record a new repertoire produced by Juan Cristóbal Losada. In 2017, they celebrated their 40th anniversary with fans in Best. In 2019, the group announced an unexpected line-up change in De Telegraaf: media personality Chimène van Oosterhout replaced Ria Thielsch.
