How does plastic injection molding work?
The first step in the plastic injection molding process is to come up with the idea of making something useful, and then designing the product with cad software. You will need to design your part by using CAD software. Once you have designed your part and mold, you can begin to create the tool path for cutting out the metal shape of your part. Now that you have your design, it's time to put it into a mold. You'll need to select the type of plastic material, which is most common done with a resin identification code (ric). You can find this information in your CAD file or on the product's packaging. In this step, we clamp the mold onto the injection molding machine and let it heat up until it's hot enough to melt the pellets of plastic into a liquid when they enter underneath the ram. This process makes sure that nothing is trapped inside, which could cause defects in your product.
A molten pool of plastic forms under the ram as it pushes forward, filling in every nook and cranny of your mold cavity. After injecting the molten plastic into a cavity within a steel or aluminum mold, we remove it from the press so that it can be cooled and hardened.
Once the plastic has been injected into the mold, plastic injection molding manufacturers remove it from the press so that it can be cooled and hardened. The mold is then cleaned up and inspected for any damage. Once we've verified that everything looks good, plastic injection molding factories workers will inspect your part as well.

Mold weight: the injection mold made of mold steel is heavy, and the injection mold made of aluminum alloy is light.
Mold manufacturing cost: mold steel injection mold made of high cost, aluminum alloy injection mold made of low cost.

Knitted lace socks with beading around the upper edge - my own design.
Worked on a 2.5mm 32" circular needle (magic loop). I designed these to work six repeats of a 12 row by 12 stitch lace pattern (72 stitches around) that is a variation of one from an Estonian stitch pattern book.
The yarn is KnitPicks Risatta, a blend with 42% Cotton, 39% Superwash Merino Wool, 13% Polyamide, 6% Elite Elastic. The colour is Burgundy, but really reads as a dark red. The beads are six 6/0 translucent pink, with a lustre finish, added with a crochet hook during the knitting.
Molding parts like these generally is not recommended on machines larger than 20 tons because it is hard to control such small shot sizes. Also, long residence times and material degradation would occur with oversize (i.e., normal-size) barrels. Lab machines, though small, are not considered good candidates for micromolding, as they are not usually designed for high-volume production. “Process stability is paramount. With a part this small, any variation in the process or material would mean part damage,” says Stuart Kaplan, president of Makuta Technics, a molder in Columbus, Ind., whose micro-parts business has tripled in the last 18 months. “Accurate screw and barrel design, and injection control are essential,” agrees Herman Plank, managing director of Ferromatik Milacron Europe. “Even when molding a gram of material, you have to be careful not to short-shoot the mold or create flash.” For these reasons, machine builders are starting to develop specialized systems for micromolding.
Adding to the challenges, these high-performance miniature parts often require engineering materials like polyamide-imide, liquid-crystal polymer, polyetherimide, PEEK, PPS, and new cyclo-olefin (COC) resins, in addition to more standard ABS, nylon, acetal, and TP polyester. Many jobs also involve fillers like PTFE, Kevlar, carbon fiber, and glass fibers or beads.
