Had a fun time teaching a class on photographing pollinators at the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum this morning. Once the class was over, I went out and captrued a few images of my own. This is one of the shots that I captured.
Until that first killing freeze comes along, the pollinators are working hard to gather food & the flowers are using pollinators to make seed.

Bee Orchid / ophrys apifera. Lindrick Common, South Yorkshire. 20/06/20.
Who can resist a Bee Orchid! I find them hard to ignore when I've got a camera in my hand. I'm fascinated by the unique and individual markings on their velvety 'bee bodies'.

Bees play an important role in pollinating flowering plants, and are the major type of pollinator in ecosystems that contain flowering plants. Bees either focus on gathering nectar or on gathering pollen depending on demand, especially in social species. Bees gathering nectar may accomplish pollination, but bees that are deliberately gathering pollen are more efficient pollinators. It is estimated that one third of the human food supply depends on insect pollination, most of which is accomplished by bees.
Not sure which species of hummingbird this is. The beak is covered with pollen, proving that the little birds are important pollinators for plants. The plant is a shrub commonly known as autumn sage, a variety of salvia. It blooms much of the year, including during autumn as the name implies.

It is pretty clear why mason bees like the one shown here are considered our best bee pollinators when you see the pollen stuck to those abdominal hairs!

The blossoming tulip has been a favorite in paintings mainly because of its many different colors and varieties that open and close to beautifully unique flower structures.
fun facts:
The biological function of the tulip and other flowers is reproductive, therefore their purpose is mediating (pollinating) the male angiosperm with the female ovum (fertilization) for the formation and dispersal of seeds for the next generation of blossoms.
