Bumblebeast. This is a Nevada bumblebee (Bombus nevadensis) foraging in a cutleaf penstemon (Penstemon richardsonii) at our Barlow Ranger District Office in Dufur, Oregon. The Nevada bumblebees are the largest species in our area, and this queen was at least an inch and a half long. These large bees weigh heavily on flowers as they pollinate them. Prickly Pollinator: The Cactus Flower’s Secret Bee. In the heart of the Juniper Prairie Wilderness within the Ocala National Forest, a stunning sight awaits. A tall prickly pear cactus proudly displays it yellow flowers, drawing the attention of pollinators like a tiny bee nestled inside the April blossom. This part of the wilderness boasts sandy soils, resplendent wildflowers that burst forth after prescribed fires, and a backdrop of towering longleaf pines. Amidst this high and dry landscape, the beauty of nature thrives, captivating all who behold it. This photo was submitted for the May 2023, employee photo contest: flowers and pollinators.

It's been much too long since I've done a Miscellany post. With the new growth of our late spring-early summer, I plan to get back into the swing of things.

In Britain, insect visitors to the Bee Orchid (Ophrys apifera) are uncommon and the flower is usually self pollinated. However, on the continental mainland of Europe, this and many other Ophrys species have specialist insect pollinators, which are attracted to them by pseudopheromones (false female scents).
The pseudopheromones persuade male insects to try to mate with the flower. Pollinia are much modified anthers, containing pollen. The pollinia become attached to the insect, which then flies to another flower and thus transfers the pollen.
In the image shown of the bee orchid in Britain, when the flower first opens (see previous image), the pollinia are hidden in the ‘hood’ at the top of the flower. After a day or two, self pollination usually occurs. The pollinia fall down and are blown by wind into contact with the sticky stigma - as shown in this image.

Food on the Fly. This photo shows a digger bee (Anthophora species) foraging on broadleaf lupine (Lupinus latifolius) which we planted at our Barlow Ranger District Office in Dufur, Oregon to create a native plant display. The presence of these native bees each year shows that excellent pollinator habitat can quickly be created in urban areas. This bee is very quick and took many tries to photograph. Apiary. This was one of the several hives I managed as a beekeeper in Northeast Georgia. The behavior shown by the bees is called bearding and it a way to cool the internal temperature of the hive by circulating air with their wings. The species name, "mellifera" has Greek roots, and means honey-carrying (in Greek, meli=honey and fero=carry) - hence "Apis mellifera" is the honey-carrying bee. The name was coined in 1758 by Carolus Linnaeus.

UPDATE: Many thanks to basilly for identifying the plant. It's a species of Sedum, a large genus of leaf succulents. My mother keeps it in a pot in her garden.

Sleeping in a Sunflower. This is a male long-horned bee (Mellisodes species) sleeping in a sunflower (Helianthus annuus) at our Barlow Ranger District Office in Dufur, Oregon. The male bees must find safe places to sleep at night, often congregating together for warmth. This one and several others, were sleeping on the sunflowers at our office, and didn’t start moving around until the sun warmed them up in mid-morning.
